Thanks David ! I've been looking for an alternative treatment for Babesia as I developed severe itching from Mepron, (Poss allergy ?).

I was just about to say the cost of babesiosis treatment isn't bad - I took clindamyacin and quinine. Had doxy before and after this combo. I don't remember if I ever did zith. Sigh. Maybe.

Differential efficacy of drug combinations in the elimination of Babesia infection in humans Combination of drugs Daily dosage (mg) Weeks after treatment Babesia detected in patient by Giemsa-stained blood smears Hamster inoculation

Combination A
Clindamycin plus quinine--
Daily Dosage Clindamycin 1200mg
quinine 1950mg
Weeks 2=positive 4=pos 8=pos 12=pos

Combination B
Azithromycin plus quinine
Daily Dosage Azithromycin 1000mg, Quinine 1950mg
Weeks 2=Negative 4=Neg 8=Neg 12=Neg

A 10-day course of therapy with combination A was given and combination B was administered for another 10 consecutive days two months after initial treatment, and hamsters inoculated with 1 ml of the patient's blood were used to verify the clearance of babesial infection.

Looks like that cured it?
Camp B wins combination B !!!!

I never took mepron either. Cleared it with clindamycin/quinine and artemisinin.

My doctor has stats on HIS patients who have been treated with clindy/Q or mepron/zith. He has about a 5% better result with clindy/Q!!

Thanks for the link, david.

Thanks all for the valuable information.

I just got my Quest test results back yesterday --
with a very strong positive for Babesia.

Seven months after starting tx for lyme --
it is good to know.

My llmd prescribed malarone, which I have not yet
started to take. Will pick it up tonight.
Also taking 7g/amoxy/day for lyme.

any of you wonderful experts know how malarone
compares with these other treatments, zith & quinine?

Many thanks!

Yours,
VL [Smile]

Malarone is known as "mepron lite."

With tissue stage Babesiosis- which WA1 is but not Microti I believe (could be wrong here- correct me if I am!*) Malarone is a better choice!!! Better tissue penetration thahn Mepron- was a paper on it years back-

How does that compare to the combo of Azithromycin plus quinine?

Here's a newer study

http://www.ajtmh.org/cgi/content/abstract/74/3/401

I can't recall-is quinine hard on the system, or was it clindamycin? If its the latter, this might be a good regimen. But how many days? Plus on giemsa smear my babesia doesn't show up but its positive on FISH. So, I don't know how I'd re-test, I guess FISH.

I don't know the answers, but hubby is on Clindamycin/quinine combo now. Sounds like his stomach is about to erupt.
