We are going to start empiric tx for babs after a year of other abx with so-so improvement.

He recommends Mepron 1 tsp 2x/d + Zith 500mg 2x/d, 3 weeks on (only Mon thru Fri) and then the 4th week is off all meds. In 3rd week add tinidazole 500 mg bid. Repeat x 3 cycles of this.

Has anyone done a similar protocol and improved? Any concerns re the one week rest week after 3 weeks on?

thanks in advance for your comments!

I had to pulse my babs meds including the mepron-for stomach issues.

Herxed hard enough & did seem to get rid of alot of my babs symptoms. Specially it finally got rid of my low grade fevers that I had had for 20 years.

Good luck with your treatment
Hugs & healing
Dana

Re. taking week four off after 3 weeks on Mepron (as advised by my LLMD) I see that it does have a long half life:

quote:
The half-life of atovaquone was 62.5 35.3 hours after IV administration and ranged from 67.0 33.4 to 77.6 23.1 hours across studies following administration of MEPRON Suspension . The half-life of atovaquone is long due to presumed enterohepatic cycling and eventual fecal elimination.
Hmmm, it has a long half life but not so long as to not decrease it's therapeutic levels significantly if it is not taken for seven days.

And the reason we add Zithromax is to help with Mepron resistance. Seems it would be better to stay on it if there are not difficulties with tolerance of it.
