My local herbalist is telling me that boneset should only be taken for a short time period.

Such as to get over the flue.

Otherwise it cause liver damage.

It is on the list of dangerous herbs.

Heres what I found on it:

Common Side Effects and Interactions

A small minority experience nausea and/or vomiting when using boneset. However, the fresh plant is more likely to cause these conditions than the dried herb.

Although pyrrolizidine alkaloids, potentially liver-damaging chemicals, are found in some similar plants the levels in boneset are minimal. No known findings of liver damage from taking boneset have been reported.

Regardless, liver-diseased individuals should avoid boneset, and no one should take it consistently for six months or longer. Women who are breast-feeding should not take boneset. Do not use boneset when a high fever (over 102 degrees F) is present.

Hope this helps

thank Lisi and John for the info.

I wonder if boneset does some killing of funghi...

I can't say, but I had a big toxin load this last week. Obviously, everytime I kill funghi, my liver suffers more than usual. I had to take 3 milk thistle instead of 2 and still added the essential oils rubbed on my liver 1-2x day...

I'm using both rizols (for funghi) and the boneset (for bart), so I can't say what stressed my liver. I supposed it was more the rizols because it kills funghi that are toxic. But who knows??

Anyway, I start to be conviced that boneset is powerful, as it acts so fast to reduce symptoms of swelling, pain on my hand, that I suppose are bart symptoms. I got rashes lately there. And in the brain, it clearly cleans something there too.

I would start with boneset slowly. I thought it was innofensive, mostly only to treat symptoms but now I start to believe it kills bugs too. Maybe that could be a reason to stress the liver too?? Just a guess.

Buhner, who's done a lot of research on hepatitis and on herbs for the liver, mentions in the HEaling Lyme book that boneset can be a liver tonic in a certain dosage but doesnt give many details on that usage.

I"ll try to find out more information in the next few days- I'm going to try and get his 'herbs for the liver' book. he's usually really good about the research behind his recommendations and the hep book will probably mention this.

Although I have take NO boneset at all, I have read on it.

Buhner recommends taking it for as long as necessary; about 2 to 6 weeks.

It can cause nausea, but usually it it the HOT tea that does that. Cold usually does not. Or at least you will be less nausious. The cooler the tea the less nausea.

Otherwise there are no side effects or contraindications.

Just another info. Andrographis. The bottles usually say "not for long term use".

I had used it for 13 months, it's the first time I paused it (for about 5 days now).

I'm still very alive!!

Buhner had recommended to stay on andro for at least 9 months if you have lyme.

You can post the question in Planetthrive, Buhner usually answers all questions (but it may take some time).
