Hi all,
I give myself daily IM injections of Rocephin. It's not that hard to do and it really doesn't bother me to do it.

But yesterday, when I did the injection, it was weird. I injected in my thigh in the general area I have injected before.

It really stung when I inserted the needle. That hasn't happened before. I aspirated it and wasn't in a vessel so I went ahead and injected. When I pulled the needle out, it started burning and some of the abx came back out the needle hole. That was the really weird part.

It didn't bleed, but seeped a little bit of the medication. The whole thing felt very strange. Today, I have a small lump there and the injection site is slightly itchy.

Does anyone know what I did wrong? This is the 15th day of injections and I haven't had this kind of reaction before.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Nimzovich,
It is 1/2cc of 1% Lidocaine and 125mgs of generic Rocephin injected once daily. I rotate to the glut max when my husband is home to give them to me there.

Otherwise, I am rotating the top of the thigh muscles on both legs where the nurse showed me. I have about 4 inches of thigh muscle to use and I make sure I don't inject close to where I did before.

That particular leg is not happy with the injections. I have a huge bruise from one injection from several days ago. The strange injection was away from that bruise.

So what do you think?

I have been injecting rocephin, and now ceftriaxone, for quite a while. From my own experiences and I believe from what a nurse or doctor said (my memory is not so good here) you have to be really careful when injecting in the thigh. It is a lot of liquid for the thigh. When I inject it in my thigh, I do it very, very slowly. I believe my doctor advised doing part of the shot in one thigh and the rest in the other (I would use a new syringe in each thigh to avoid contamination) [I am not a medical doctor and not trained in medicine].

I believe the buttox is the best place for the shot, although it can develop hard spots and bumps. But perhaps so can the thigh [again, I am not a medical doctor]

My experience is with injecting Bicillin but I experienced something very similar to what you mention.

For me it happened in my gluts. My understanding is that my gluts just couldn't take any more shots. I think it might have been due to scarring or tissue injury. I switched to injecting in my quads.

I also had good luck holding the meds in by using the NexCare tatoo bandages. They really sealed the site off and helped it to clot so I didn't lose so much of the medicine.

When I injected in my vl, I tried to change the injection site as much as I could. My only problem there was the development of sterile abcesses but that's a whole other issue. I helped those heal with weekly ultrasound (per my LLMD) and after inadvertantly pucturing the abcess, I put hot, wet compresses on to help it drain (on the advice of LLMD nurse.)

Good luck!
D
