Hi all,
My doc has prescribed 250mgs per day to start, once per day. It will be ramped up later. I was on Doxy for three months and hated the restrictions of no calcium within two hours, etc.

I will be taking this with food as directed. Does the no calcium within two hours restriction apply to Biaxin? Is there anything else about this abx I should know?

Thanks in advance!

That was the best abx for me of all the stuff I took! It will give you a metal taste in your mouth, so you won't like that too much!

I found that drinking a lot of water really helped.

Calcium and Biaxin...I don't know. Check here:

Check Interactions2 potential interactions were found for the drugs you selected.
You searched for interactions between the following drugs:

B-12 Capsules
Biaxin
Calcium and Vitamin D

(Note: Not all drug interactions are known or reported in the literature, and new drug interactions are continually being reported. This information is provided only for your education and for you to discuss with your personal healthcare provider. )

CLARITHROMYCIN (in Biaxin) may interact with GRAPEFRUIT JUICE

Grapefruit juice may block the breakdown of clarithromycin in the intestines. This could cause an increase in blood levels of clarithromycin which could increase the risk of side effects from this antibiotic. Potential side effects of clarithromycin include headache, diarrhea, and nausea. You should avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking clarithromycin. Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems.

This interaction is poorly documented and is considered major in severity.

FOOD may interact with CLARITHROMYCIN (in Biaxin)

Food may decrease the absorption of certain forms of clarithromycin from the stomach. If this happens, then potentially less clarithromycin would be available for the body to use and blood levels of the drug could become too low. This could make clarithromycin less effective. To minimize the risk of this potential interaction, take a dose of clarithromycin at least 2 hours before or at least 2 hours after eating a meal or snack. Discuss this potential interaction with your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner if you think you are having problems.

This interaction is poorly documented and is considered major in severity

Its always a good idea to read contraindications and the pharmacy handout ask them they have a good data base for interactions and also always take vitamins and acidophilis 2or 3 hrs after or before abx's that should apply to just about every mineral, vitamin, probiotic unless specified different.

HI,
Thanks for the replies! I can probably tolerate the metal taste in the mouth but I already have ear ringing so loud it drives me crazy.

I hate to think that will get worse. But I won't know till I try.

Thanks again!

I just stared Biaxin (500 mg 2x per day) and Amoxicillin (500mg 2x per day) about two weeks ago. I got diareah pretty bad but I started at full dose and had the Amox., too. The metal taste feels like I'm sucking on a penny! It seems to be going away and so are the bowel issues. I had some stomach cramps, too - the pharmacist said the Biaxin pushes food through your system faster. He also said to take it with food if you get a stomach ache (which you probably will)

Good luck - many have told me that this drug works pretty darn good so I'm optimistic.

Other than that I am actually starting to feel better.

Hi Mojo,
Sounds like you started at a very high dose. My doc is starting me slow. Just 250mg once per day. He said I can ramp up to 500 per day after a while.

Hopefully that will keep the side effects down some. My husband had to be on Flagyl after some dental work. He says he hates the metal taste it gives him.

Flagyl will be my third abx starting in a month or so. I guess I will have to learn to live with the metal taste. But it's better than the sun sensitivity I had with Doxy. That was terrible.

Thanks again!

The taste is awful! The first few days it was bad enough to wake me up at night! Now I'm getting used to it.

Oh great! Good for you. Biaxin is a very good antibiotic. I took it with plaquenil.

I hope you get great results like I did.

i just discontinued biaxin after several months on it. i saw slow, steady improvement but lately have had some flare ups so my doc switched out the biaxin and added cedax. i first took biaxin alone, then he added doxy. (i'm still taking the doxy)

definitely had the metal taste. i chew a lot of sugarless gum. otherwise, i tolerated it very well. i think it has some kind of coating that helped minimize the stomach discomfort for me.

good luck
C

yep, Biaxin's a good abx for lyme. I took it in combination therapy-also along with plaq...

The only other thing I would suggest is make sure to takes tons of good pro-biotics spaced at least 2 hours apart from the abx.

Good luck & hope you are feeling better soon
Blessings

Maybe I just didn't notice but I didn't seem to have a metallic taste when I took Biaxin but then again everyone reacts differenly to meds.

I took it with plaquenil for a number of months and then added minocycline to the mix before getting off the biaxin. I am not sure how helpful it was for me but I know for some others it was a big help.

Good luck!

I took it and had the metal mouth; my son took it and did not. He also has said it was one of the best abx for him.

I took it with Plaquenil and didn't have any real problems with it. Not like I do with so many other ABX.

I would say it is one of the better ABX for me.

Hey all,
Thanks again for all the encouragement. I hope it does as well for me as it has for most of you. I will probably start chewing gum for the metal taste. Thanks for that tip.

I have not taken Biaxin for Lyme, but when I took it for sinus infections it kept me awake at night.

Of course that brought about the dreaded roll of the eyes from my ducks! [Roll Eyes]

The nurse practitioner, the only good thing about that practice, knew better than to put me on it or on amoxicillin, which never did a thing for me, at least at the dose the duck put me on.

Too bad the ducks couldn't read my chart as well as she could! just one reason I don't go there any more.

Good luck with the Biaxin! We are all different, so I hope it is smooth sailing for you. [Big Grin]

I never had the metal taste either, but yes it did keep me up at night also...which absolutely drove me nuts! [Frown]

Hope it works well for you [Smile]

Biaxin worked really well for me. The metallic, fake vanilla taste was worse the first time around. When I went back on it the following year the taste wasn't so bad.

Here's a trick I discovered to minimize the bad taste. Don't let the stuff hit your tongue ever. Don't toss it in your mouth and then gulp some water. You'll taste it for a long time. Instead: fill mouth with water, tip head back, open mouth, drop in Biaxin and swallow fast. Drink some more water right away and then plenty of water over the next few hours. This really works.

hats
