Hello out there,

My 3.5 yo has been on Cipro for Bart/Ehrlichia for about 6 weeks now. He is starting to have some irritability that is uncharacteristic. I am also noticing that his joints are showing some stiffness that we hadn't seen before. I think these are due to the Cipro and are similar to what I experienced on Levaquin.

My question is, does anyone one know what to give a child for support of these sx? What doses did you use?

My LLMD/Psych told me to take free form Glycine (among other things) for the irritability since it is a precursor to GABA and Levaquin reduces GABA in the brain. I also just remembered today that taking Magnesium, as I do, is advised to prevent tendon damage on this class of abx.

With the Glycine my question is mainly about dose. I can mix it in his juice. With the Magesium the only appropriate form I could find was MagCitrate that is mixed with hot water but then I'm concerned about dose and making his stools too loose. I guess I could feed him more binding foods.

Any help would be much appreciated. We have an apptmt with Dr. J in late March and hopefully with Dr. M the ped Naturopath in mid March.

TIA,
Denise

Not being pretentious here, it sounds like you are very knowledgable (more than me),but for general herxheimers with a child our doc told us to do a nice epsom salt, baking soda and peroxide bath--not too hot, just relaxing and comforting.

We have done this several times and it has helped some. I think the added benefit of absorbing some Mag is very good.

Just a thought.

Hi Denise,

I have no Lyme experience/knowledge..but I did have a child on Cipro for 12 months.

My daughter, who was 7 at the time, developed a nasty osteomylitis. She had renal failure after 2
mos. IV abx., but neither infection was quite done, leaving Cipro as her best shot. It did scare me.

She tolerated the Cipro very well, but..she had liver function checked 2x/month, was on a magnesium supplement and probiotics. She also ate alot of yogurt and preferred a bland diet at the time. She must have a stomach of steel, but all did go well for her.

The magnesium supplement was compounded for us. I looked for the info and can't find it, sorry. Our pediatrician worked with the local pharmacy on a decent liquid.

Good luck, wish I could be more help.

Kris

Denise, Cipro gave me a terrible tendonitis in my elbow that took almost 6 months to heal. Be very careful with this drug especially with little ones. Robin in Houston
