I get sick from eating any fruit. I have been totally avoiding fruit and sugar for quite some time now. Today I had two strawberries now I feel like I'm starting to get sick.

I always feel the same _whenever_ I get sick, mostly. Usually starts with a very slight lump feeling in my throat, slight weird pressure in my head, then I feel hot or cold, and achey. My eyes will often ache a little bit too, and I am sometimes shakey. Etc etc. I also started twitching on my face some more right after I ate them.

Often I will develop a throat infection later on with white stuff on my tonsils.

This happens to me any time I try to eat fruit, even small amounts. Does anybody get this this bad, or have any comments about this?

eric, so sorry to read this. i LOVE my fruits/veggies/meat since i can't eat so many things since I'm allergic to:

gluten ... wheat and rye;

casein --- cow's milk, cheeses, egg whites, & garlic

plus diabetes 2; so keep sugar load down.

Hey Catalyst,

This is actually a very common allergy for people. It is called Oral allergy Syndrome.

You react to the pollen in the fruit and it causes an allergic action.

It can happen with some vegetables also.

I worked with 2 people who had this problem.

One girl was so bad she would end up in ER at times.

It is like an anaphylactic reaction at times.

You should consult an allergist but there is not a lot you can do for it but be educated.

I am a certified nutritional consultant and was horrified when I learned these women couldn't enjoy their fruits and veggies.

Just a note.

Be wary of fruit from foreign countries. The insecticide/pesticide restrictions are different or non-existent.

Hi catalyst,

sorry to hear this.

Could you ask your doc to check your blood sugar levels. Fruit contains alot of sugar. In your beginning explaination it sounds alot like a glucose problem. There are also over the counter test urine strips that you could dip in & see if sugar is spilling into your urine till you get to your doc.

If you are not used to eating any sugar I wonder if the small amount of glucose in fruit now is effecting you?

Could also be an allergic reaction too?

But then with the white stuff on your tonsils it also sounds a lot like yeast with the white in your throat.

One last thought. could be the furit you eat be interacting with any of your meds or hers you are taking?

Just some quick thoughts. With lyme some things that happen are such a mysery it is VERY frustrating [Frown]

I agree with checking the glucose, just in case!

Those on long term abx need to stay away from fruit. Granny Smith apples are OK in moderation.

YEAST will rear its ugly head when fruit is eaten.

Cathy...interesting stuff....I never heard of that!

Didn't see this mentioned by anyone else, but fruit can also be moldy. If you have yeast or mold (fungi) sensitivity, it could be exacerbated by raw fruit.

I loves me some strawberries, but have you seen what they grow if they sit out too long...? [puke]

If you can handle pasteurized fruit juices and cooked or stewed fruit, but not fresh fruit, I would suspect mold or pesticide residue. You can rule out pesticides by trying organic fresh fruit.

If you can't handle fruit juices either, you might have a problem with candida overgrowth and should just stay away from fructose and simple sugars.

Anybody that'relies' on organic to be healthier or safer health wise needs a lesson in the "BAD" things in the 'organic market'.

Mostly the ONLY thing the word ORGANIC does is part your hard earned money from yourself. Why do you suppose the last lettuce e.coli scare in the lettuce and other greens affected the 'organic' market???

IF it was really organic,anyway,,,??? Lots of 'misuse' of the word "organic", thats my opinion and I am sticking by it,wish I didnt have to,,,be ware, it isnt what you THINK it is!!!--just don--

Heres some tips.

Eat plain yogurt with your fruit. I make my own homemade yogurt and eat it with a piece of fruit
sometimes. I was told to do this by a Natural

Dr, so that the candida would not get worse. It worked and works. I dont eat alot of fruit but do eat it sometimes with yogurt, my own plain

homemade yogurt.

Also, I reacted to everything reagrding my throat, and for myself it was the

Lyme, and possibly the other coinfection babesia.

I actually became allergic to ALL foods, chemicals anything I eat or breathed made my throat swell, while off antibiotics for lyme. I was put back on the antibiotics, and got better.

So, for me, the throat is the lyme and babesia.

I am not sure if bartonella is involved.

The white is certainly suggestive of yeast. If it is yeast, I'd expect you to get the same reaction from eating foods with sugar (sucrose).

I cannot eat fruit because it digests in an odd way which then leads to burning tongue pain. A single piece of raw apple can lead to weeks of tongue pain. Both laxatives and gut motility meds resolve the pain.

I do not get this reaction from cane sugar (sucrose) and therefore have been suspicious of fruit sugar (fructose).

Marnie often talks here about phosphofructokinase's role in Lyme. I've been wondering if there is a connection between fructose and phosphofructokinase.

Hi, thanks for replying everybody!!

I did give myself a glucose tolerance test once, I made a glucose drink with the normal test amount, then tested my blood sugar the way the test normally goes about it. I did not get sick from that, however my sinuses got real stuffed up. I also did not feel 'hyper' like eating a whole banana would make me.

I have been on a dairy free diet so I do not eat yoghurt :/

Cathy - You know, I never really thought about the pollen! And I DO definitely get allergies from a lot of things. I already knew I once had OAS from raw carrots and bananas, but back when I still ate fruit, I just kept eating both of them until my throat stopped itching.

sizzled - I too have wondered about pesticides, It could very well be a combination of things causing me a problem as well.

Dana - I really do think yeast likely plays a role for other reasons too.

Nietzsche - Moldy, yes! Of course why didn't I think of that too. Darn, seems like fruit is the devil now that I think about it, lol!

dguy - Also, I have been wondering about a possible fructose digestive problem. Fruit seems to make me 'hyper' and extremely exaberate my ADHD. My dad also gets hyper and he eats a lot of fruit, and also seems to have ADHD.


I've wondered before if some people with ADHD, and/or other people could possibly have some un-named fructose (or other non-glucose sugar) digestive problem. I've read studies about people with ADHD and other mental disorders that showed impaired cerebral glucose metabolism. I wonder if something similar couldn't happen with fructose.

I wondered why fructose-tolerance tests were issued along with glucose tolerance tests. (of course there are other sugars besides fructose, glucose, and sucrose).

trueblue had spoke of a fructose-tolerance test or something of that sort, which I will eventually ask my LLMD about.

Sometime when I have some money to spare I'll pick up some raw fructose and try it out and see what happens.

Also I want to get some allergy testing done when I have more money, because I think my allergies play a large roll in my illness.

Welp for now I just want to thank everyone again for their extremely helpful input. I also feel a lot less like a freak now! [Smile]
