I broke out in hives and the derm doc prescribed triamcinolone acetonide cream(amongst 4 rx's). Can we Lymies use a steroid cream?

For a while I used a steroid cream that a dermatologist prescribed. It didn't help me at all unfortunately but it also didn't seem to make lyme symptoms worse or anything. I am curious of other people's experiences, though.

I just asked my LLMD Dr.H in NY about steroids a few days ago.....although for me it was steroid ear drops and nose spray (for ear and sinus infections), and not a steroid cream.

He said it's ok to use steroids in this way, as long as the Lyme is being treated at the same time with abx, and also the use of steroid containing meds in this way is usually short term so is safe!

Hope this helps!

I agree. It should be OK. Hope those hives disappear ASAP! [Smile]

I have used the triamcinolone cream and it really hit me hard (suppression of adrenal function).

But from february 06 - june 06 I used it in the tinniest amounts possible to keep the rashes down to a tolerable level.

If I used any more than just a tiny dab mixed with sesame oil to make it spread further, I would become incredibly fatigued and depressed.

I hope I am just overly sensitive, but I would be on the look out for these types of symptoms.

I finally went online and read the actual fact sheet from the manufacturer and it says that if enough is used dermally (spelling?) it can have systemic effects.

Dear Robin-

I received steroids otically (in the ear), and intranasally which helped develope a systemic fungal infection. I had yeast dripping out of my ears. Chronic fatigue set it.

There are loads of holistic things you can to other than steroids. I urge you NOT to use any steroid at all. I am still fighting this thing.

Robin,

Sorry that you are sick.

When I finally found out that I had Borreliosis, I had been taking antibiotics and steroid nose spray for an assumed sinus infection. They made me sicker. My LLMD said that steroids make lyme bacteria multiply faster.

Everyone is different though.

Hope you feel better soon.

My LLMD says topical steroids are not a problem. I used triamcinoline for a while, but have better luck with Lotrisone.

He also told me to avoid any infected, or open, areas as steroids tend to suppress the immune system and slow the healing process.

Aren't rashes fun?

If you do not have any open sores with your hives, you can try Arnica Gel to help with the itching and inflammation.

It works wonders for me with muscle pain and inflammation.
