The power of electricity!

Reminded me....

Years ago, my dad did something similar.

He connected 2 wires to a 12 volt battery and to 2 metal rods with insulated handles.

He drove the metal rods into the ground about a foot apart.

And up came hundreds of worms as they hurried to "escape" the negative flow (electric current) going into the ground.

Worms for catching...fish.

*Dangerous*, but effective... and cheaper than going to a bait shop.

REALLY!

Marnie,
That isnt al that unusual at all. They did that around here all the time. Now next step is they used to shock the fish too. Ever heard of going fishing with dynamite?? They really used to do that before all the crazies came about.

Throw in a half stick and take a boat and paddle it around and pick up the 'stunned' fish floating on top. Then throw another stick,,,till the boat was full,,,or they had there fill.

Chances are these were mostly carp and other rough fish that most people would throw away. My grandparents filled a old frig smoker with them and smoked them.

They ate everything and anything,,,most people dont eat,,and were thankful for the meal. They grew up in HARD times,,when they didnt have a tater to share. They learned to make do on very little.

IF my memory serves me at all,,,I think we gathered fish worms with the two rods hooked to 110 volts,,,you could feel the ground tingle.

best memories were of going out after a rain to pick up nightcrawlers at night with a flashlight. We got them by the bucket full.

When I was a kid our soil was too sandy for worms in the hot summer. Always took the spade down to the 'ditch' to find enough worms to soak in the creek.

IF I caught enough bullheads, carp and stone rollers for a meal grandma was SOOO happy!! Today people throw those all away!! No fish was too small back then!! grandma got out her homemade bread,,,in one hand,,as ammunition against a stray fish bone,,,and enjoyed the 'food'!!!

She also had a garden for a block long lot behind her house. Fed half the town from it. And NEVER owned a garden hose!!! Our local doctor used to say if it wasnt for grandmas garden they would have starved to death many times over.

ALL watering was done with a bucket,,,the hard way,,,carrying it from the faucet on one end of the block long garden.

Its sad,,,today there is three houses built on that garden. No more food to be grown there.
