Buhner's latest post on Planet Thrive is about Bell's Palsy of the Gut. Just wondering if anyone has tried bismuth, one of the things he recommends. I would love to hear your experience. He does not mention much for intestinal issues in Healing Lyme.

Another thing he writes about is fasting. I have always wanted to try a fast but am too nervous with my hypoglycemia and low body fat. Anyone had success - or failure - with a fast?

Thanks, Julie

Hhmm. Interesting article. What are the symptoms of Bell's Palsy of the Gut?

I am currently on bismuth subcarbonate and it caused some major herxing initially. I still suffer some increased joint pain. I wonder is this compound is as effective against Lyme as the bismuth citrate.

Isn't bismuth the main ingredient in 'Pepto Bismol'?

Well it's not actually "bell's Palsy " of the gut.
Bells palsy is partial paralysis of FACE which is caused by problems with the 7th cranial nerve.
So the term is being used loosley.

What he's talking about is actually paralysis of peristalsis of the gut... and Dr. Sherr wrote about it a year ago.. see reference below...

I had this. It was gone after my treatment.

Healing the G.I. is very very difficult for many lyme patients. There are numerous symptoms -- nausea, vomiting, dry heaves, motility issues, gastritis, malabsorption of nutrients, diarrhea etc etc. Many possible causes of each symptom.

Hubby has had every symptom I listed plus some others.

Causes could be candida, parasites, Lyme or any of the other coinfections (as mentioned in the Dr S article), overgrowth of ammonia producing bacteria (klebsiella and others), deficiency in hydrocloric acid or other digestive enzymes etc etc.

Treating Lyme and coinfections does not always heal the G.I. if there are other bacteria or fungal issues or parasites -- sometimes these other things need specific treatment.

Pepto bismol didn't do much for hubby except make his stomache aches worse -- the salicylate (aspirin) aggravated his gastritis.

As for glutamine -- helped hubby pre-Lyme, but after Lyme it makes his neuro symptoms worse (tremors/myoclonus/seizure-like episodes). Especially if you have gastritis, glutamine can be converted to glutamic acid very easily -- glutamic acid is an excitotoxin.

Hubby tried the stephania root -- all I could find was the powder -- I made him some tea which he vomited. I think I will try putting it in some capsules and see if he can tolerate it that way. I still have it stashed away somewhere.

Hubby has probably tried just about all the herbs suggested for G.I. symptoms -- the best was olive leaf for diarrhea.

Depending on how symptomatic you are I would be very nervous about fasting. When hubby first got sick he lost 30 pounds in a few months and was reduced to eating baby food and protein drinks because of the gastritis. This lasted for about 6 months and symptoms got worse and worse -- even ended up getting IV fats to try to help rebuild his body. This was before his diagnosis.

The biggest help was parasite treatment. Without that I hate to think what would have happened. The rapid weight loss and malabsorption problems really messed up his hormones and neurotransmitters resulting in several psychiatric admissions.

Of course a fast would be for a shorter period of time, but it would be a tremendous stress on the body in my opinion.

This is not medical advice, just my opinion based on hubby's experiences.

Yes bismuth is found in Pepto Bismal. The bismuth I am taking is much more powerful.

Yes I had a bad allergic reaction to Flagyl so that is out.

Yes, you can take it to the bank that my doctor will not be using pharmacutical drugs to heal my leaky gut.

Yes, we have been working on healing the leaky gut for 8 mths and a current bloodtest showed there is still some issues. However, I am light years better than when we began. Healing my gut is healing my arthritis!

I don't have time right now to read the article but I will just as soon as I get home tonight.

Thanks for posting!
