This is a new study just out today.
So much for salt/c, esp. longterm. You increase your risk of heart disease and mortality generally.
-----

Eating less salt could prevent cardiovascular disease
Long-term effects of dietary sodium reduction on cardiovascular disease outcomes: observational follow-up of the trials of hypertension prevention

People who significantly cut back on the amount of salt in their diet could reduce their chances of developing cardiovascular disease by a quarter, according to a report on bmj.com today.

Researchers in Boston also found a reduction in salt intake could lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by up to a fifth.

Cardiovascular disease refers to the group of diseases linked to the heart or arteries, for example a stroke or heart disease. While there is already a substantial body of evidence showing that cutting back on salt lowers blood pressure, studies showing subsequent levels of cardiovascular disease in the population have been limited and inconclusive.

This research provides some of the strongest objective evidence to date that lowering the amount of salt in the diet reduces the long term risk of future cardiovascular disease, say the authors of the report.

Researchers followed up participants from two trials completed in the nineties which had been conducted to analyse the effect that reducing salt in the diet had on blood pressure.

All the participants had high-normal blood pressure (pre-hypertension). They were therefore at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease. 744 people took part in the first Trial of Hypertension Prevention which was completed in 1990, 2382 in the second, which ended in 1995. In both trials participants reduced their sodium intake by approximately 25% - 35% alongside a control group who didn't cut back on their salt intake.

Detailed information about cardiovascular and other health problems was sought from participants in the earlier trials. As part of this researchers found that participants who had cut back on salt during the trials tended to stick to a lower salt diet compared to those who had been in the control group. In total the researchers obtained information from 2415 (77.3%) participants, 200 of whom had reported some sort of cardiovascular problem.

The reduction in the risk of developing cardiovascular problems as a result of the sodium reduction intervention was substantial. The results showed these pre-hypertensive individuals were 25% less likely to develop cardiovascular problems over the course of the 10-15 years post-trial. There was also a 20% lower mortality rate. This risk reduction was evident in each trial.

To the authors knowledge this study is the first and only study of sufficient size and duration to assess the effects of a low salt diet on cardiovascular problems based on randomised trial data. It provides unique evidence that lowering salt in the diet might prevent cardiovascular disease.

This is pure bull put out by the FDA. Salt is one of the single greatest things God gave to man. He calls christians to be "the salt of the earth" which in other words means to go out and heal men's souls. Salt has great healing properties and is one of the world's greatest antibacterial/antiprotozoal medicines. There have been many studies on salt and bloodpressure/cardiovascular disease. They have shown that processed/man-made salt is toxic and causes these problems and natural salts from the earth risks are much less. Salt use to be one of the greatest trade products for centuries.

I would not listen to this info. I would rather learn about salt from the One that created it rather than a government/money driven medical field.

verse 1.in Matt 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

then later here is what he said.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Whos is he talking to ?? Hes talking to his disciples & multitudes from verse 1.

Not christians he's talking to the Jewish people.

Christians dont come along until apostle Paul is given "the dispensation of the grace of God" was committed to him (Eph. 3:2) and that it was his "ministry... received of the Lord Jesus" to make known "the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24). this claim was made for none of his predecessors, nor did any of them even mention the dispensation or the gospel of the grace of God so far as the record is concerned.

But Paul said this:
4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Christians in a sense are the same exact people as desciples, not to start an argument but just stressing the point. Salt is good.

Yup. This is directed at the public because we tend to overdo it. We consume too much salt.

We can drink 1 cup (0.2L) of seawater (contains other elements besides Na) a day before our kidneys fail .

"The daily recommended intake of sodium is the subject of some debate, but generally falls somewhere between 1000 and 3000 mg per day;

Americans apparently eat on average 4000 to 5000 mg per day. 1/2 teaspoon (2-1/2 ml) of salt contains about 1000 mg of sodium, so cutting down on salt is one way to control sodium intake."

http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=Sodium

It is all about the right amount!

Too little, not good. Too much, not good.

Salt is used to destroy pathogens which is why some meats are salted to "preserve" them. It is pathogens that begin the breakdown of meat.

Years ago, a professor named Pierre Delbet found that sodium compds. can indeed kill MOST pathogens, but then he discovered Mg compds. work even better.

In lyme, the Na-K pump is "broken"...one reason maybe because of lower cAMP levels.

From the Irish Times:

Salt killing 1,000 per year in North alone, says charity
20/04/2007 - 15:20:12

Up to 1,000 people are dying from excessive salt intake in the North every year, a charity said today.

Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke (NICHS) is blaming over-indulgence for a quarter of stroke and a fifth of heart deaths.

The intervention followed a British Medical Journal study underpinning the link between salt and high blood pressure.

NICHS chief executive Andrew Dougal said: "Food manufacturers must make a commitment to their customers that they will consistently, over a period of time, slash the salt in products."

He added heart disease was the largest killer in the North at 4,000 deaths each year.

Stroke is the third largest, responsible for 1,500 deaths and physical disability in many who survive.

The Medical Journal study showed people who significantly cut back on the amount of salt in their diet reduced their chances of developing cardiovascular disease by a quarter over 10-15 years
----

Byron, you are interpreting a metaphor literally. The Bible does not say, "You should consume lots of salt." It uses "salt of the earth" as a metaphor. It also says, "Blessed are the meek." So does that mean you should be meek in regards to lyme disease and just accept it? Or what about the biblical command, "Go forth and multiply." Was he addressing Christians or borrelia burgdorferi?

You should take good science seriously, Byron. So of course should Marc, as he is promoting a high salt lifestyle.

Also, Byron, what makes you assume this study is put out by the FDA? It has nothing to do with the FDA and why would the FDA even care to regulate salt? How would that benefit them? Salt and sugar are added to way too many prepared foods in order to enhance 'taste', and this harms people's health. As for imbibing huge amounts of salt daily in an attempt to kill intracellular bacteria, protozoa, and parasites, show me the evidence.

In any case, this is more evidence that in a significant subset, SALT KILLS.

Here is the URL for the PDF complete text:

Researchers were from Harvard, Johns Hopkins and the National Institutes of Health.

This trial was randomized and NOT retrospective, which has been part of the problem with the research previously.

Too much salt is bad for most people if it is table salt or the salt used in processing food. Those salts have additives such as aluminum.

The salt used in the salt/C protocol does not have additives. Now, of course, one must be careful to drink plenty of water and have their electrolytes monitored.

I used salt/C for one year and my blood pressure actually decreased. That is because as I used the pure salt I made sure I avoided the table salt and typical processed foods.

I still am not cured, however. Hiker

Those of us with neurally mediated hypotension NEED extra salt and are generally encouraged to increase our salt intake. If we cut it down, we will have difficulty keeping our blood pressure up. I believe many lyme patients have NMH.

I have to wonder about the specifics of salt reduction in the initial study cited.

When the people in the study reduced their salt intake, were they also reducing fried and refined foods with hydrogenated oils that salt is often associated with?

Ah yes, the amount of salt I eat to keep from blacking out from hypotension would have killed my grandfather with his high blood pressure.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was just one set of pills that would work for everybody?

"forskolin increased sodium channel density up to 125%.

We conclude that cytosolic calcium decreases and cAMP increases sodium channel number by modulating the rate of biosynthesis and/or processing of channel components. The biochemical mechanisms of these regulatory effects are considered. J. Neurosci. (1985)"

PMID: 2409245

It appears specific cells have way too little cAMP.

Hi Gigi, I posted the link to the study in a previous posting in this thread.

In regards to NMH: folks take 1 gram of salt a day, usually. Not 8-12.

There is no evidence that the toxicity of salt is from the fillers. And as I said previously, since our seawaters are polluted, sea salt may also be polluted. There's no guarantee there won't be toxic deposits in salts that were gathered from seas that have the runoff of industrial waste.

Good point. My Naturopathic Doctor told me recently that the only salt that is not polluted with mercury is pickling salt. Not sure why pickling salt would be free of mercury when others aren't and I haven't looked into it yet but she is pretty up on mercury issues so I believe her.

Are we talking White Gold or White Poison????How did Salt become Sodium Chloride? With the advent of industrial development, natural salt was "chemically cleaned" and reduced to the combination of sodium and chloriode.

Essential minerals and trace elements were removed as impurities. However, sodium chloride, such as table salt (Morton's with some other stuff) is an unnatural, isolated, unwholesome substance having nothing in common with salt.

Similar to white, refined sugar, salt, once regarded as white gold, over which wars were fought, was converted into white poison.

However, there is a higher reason for salt having been endowed with all the natural elements found in our bodies. Sodium chloride is an aggressive substance, which biochemically, is perpetually seeking an equalizing counterpart so that the body pH can always remain neutral.

Sodium chloride needs its natural counterpart in order for it to produce its effect. The natural conterparts, such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and other minerals and trace elements, demonstrate, from a biophysical standpoint, specific frequency patterns. These patterns ensure the geometric structures in our body. When these structures are missing, we are without energy and are lifeless. Salt should not be used just to add flavor to our food, but for its vibration pattern, which is similar to our body!

Without it, we cannot detox.

Its crystalline structure is electric not molecular.

Due to its transformability salt does not need to be metabolized by our body in order to be absorbed.

(I am talking about real, real natural salt. Not sodium chloride as you are used to buying it in the supermarket.)

Osmosis, the foundation of cellular metabolism, is managed by salt. Without salt we copuld neither think nor act.

Why is natural salt, so vital for our life, chemically processed and turned into poison for our consumption? The motive --- about 93% of the worldwide salt production is more or less directly used for industrial purposes. For this, pure sodium chloride is necessary. Every chemical process requires pure sodium chloride. The remaining, natural elements are considered impurities and discarded as unwanted.

Sodium chloride is essential for soda, laundry detergent, varnish, plastics, PVS - nearly everything that distances us further from nature - every day. 6-7% of the salt production is used in the food industry for inexpensive preservation purposes. There is hardly a ready-to-eat or fast-food product that doesn't contain sodium chloride (table salt), be it yoghurt, bread or ham. Great for the food industry because they are now able to extend the shelf life of many products for up to a year. For the human body, however, this has been a fatal development.

Our blood is a sole, identical to the primal ocean.

Table salt consists of sodium, chloride and additives and has nothing to do with real natural holistic salt.

Table salt is a dangerous cellular poison that the body tries to eliminate or store with an enormous expense of energy and effort.

Natural salt stored in mountains for millions of years is readily available. The oceans are not clean. Natural salt is crucial for maintaining vital functions in the body.

Take care.

It is confusing to grasp because some websites say:

"The classic case of ionic bonding, the sodium chloride molecule forms by the ionization of sodium and chlorine atoms and the attraction of the resulting ions."

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/molecule/nacl.html

Primer here explaining crystal structure and ability to ionize in water:

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/chemical/saltcom.html

It is my understanding that in nature, the minerals (positive charges) are always found locked onto a negative charge element.

hi all,

For the lovers of natural (unprocessed) salt granules My blood decreased with salt intake -Natural Sea Salt ---

Gigi,
"Similar to white, refined sugar, salt, once regarded as white gold, over which wars were fought, was converted into white poison."
----So true

Oxygen - i believe parts of the study - but they do not include: Consuming processed foods with a high processed salt content-is part of the culprit for heart disease and stroke. Once a person has High blood pressure or heart disease - they are in a different category for salt consumption - - I recall the recommendation is a 2 gram sodium diet for that specific group

Byron - Tonight I am having popcorn with sea salt -coconut oil and cinnamon for a snack - Definitely not sharing this delicious treat with the FDA

snack and be merry

'From the Irish Times:

OK OK but there's a problem with this 'one size fits all' stuff. There's a big difference in 'the north' and coastal TX or FL or AZ ect.

You lose salt thru your skin in these climates where you break a sweat just getting from the house to the car.

If you don't ingest salt to replace it you'll get an electrolyte imbalance or heatstroke or other unpleasantnesses resulting in a trip to the ER.

Of course a secretary in Maine wouldn't have to worry about this, but it does happen in the subtropics quite often when people follow low salt diets.

Charlie, you are so right. But
Sodium chloride, the table salt you buy at the grocery store, Morton's and such, does not contain any electrolites - the ones we are all missing every day and the ones that are causing us to be able to detox properly. We cannot detox anything unless we have a balanced mineral base.

So don't take sodium chloride or table salt after a hot day. Take the salt that still contains all the electrolites, such as Real Salt
mined in the mountains of Utah where it's been sitting for millions of years. That is the salt we need ----- not sodium chloride or dead table salt that is literally slowly poisoning us.

The result of consuming common table salt is the formation of overly acidic edema, or excess fluid in the body tissue, which is also the cause of cellulite. That's why doctors tell us to avoid salt.

For every fraction of an ounce of sodium chloride that cannot be eliminated, the body uses 23 times the amount of its own cell water to neutralize the salt. If the sodium chloride is still too high, re-crystallization of the talbe salt occurs as the body uses available non-degradable annimal proteins as thos found in milk, which also have no value and cannot be broken down and eliminated.

The body uses these proteins to produce uric acid in order to get rid of the excess salt. As the body cannot dispose of uric acid, it binds itself with the sodium chloride to form new crystals that are deposited directly in the bones and joints. This is the cause of different kinds of rheumatism such as arthritis, gout, and kidney and gallbladder stones

This re-crystallization is the body's bandaid solution for the cells and organs in order to protect the body from irreparable damage of irresponsible food intake. But in the long run, it poisons the system because those substances cannot be disposed of.

And additives such as iodine and fluoride increase the aggressiveness of salt. Table salt also often contains preservatives (added but not mandatory to be labeled), such as caalcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, as well as aluminum hydroxide to prevent the grains of salt from clumping together. Aluminum is a light metal that is known to accumulate in the brain. It is assumed that the high rate of Alzheimers disease in the US is linked to a high consumption of pre-processed foods, packed in aluminum, as well as to high consumption of soft drinks in aluminum cans.

The healing power of salt are based on its specific frequency vibration that balances the body's energy deficit.

The neutralizing forces of salt can cancel out or negate harmful electromagnetic vibrations in our environment.

Lots to think about before you buy the next pound of salt.

Take care.

We need salt in its holistic form, with all the natural elements, in order for our bodies to function perfectly. We need calcium, potassium and magnesium in the exact proportion in order as they appear in natural salt in order for our body to absorb and optimally utilize these minerals and trace minerals. In reality, only the naturally occurring calcium, potassium and magnesium found in natural salt can be absorbed and used by the body.

Sea salt has declined in quality with the pollution of our oceans.

The minerals in rock salt are too coarse to enter our cells. The minerals in crystal salt are available in such small particles that they can be easily absorbed by the cells. When purchasing crystal salt, be sure to check its original and proof of quality.

We use either Real Salt out of Utah's mountains available in most healthfood stores or Himalayan Crystal Salt somtimes.

Take care.

My health improved significantly when I began taking extra salt, and I have used both RealSalt and Celtic sea salt. I have a tendency towards low blood pressure, and I was in a deficit mode for sodium.

It would be a shame for those who really need it, to be frightened away from it by research that may or may not have taken into account all the different variables.

A good LLMD, LLND, or perhaps even a nutritionist should be able to help us determine if it would be beneficial for us or not.

Claire, if you need it because of NMH or low blood pressure, you probably need a small amount and as Gigi says, get healthy salt. I always liked realsalt the best (I'm off salt now----I became salt/sensitive since salt/c and my body doesn't like it. And actually my bp has lowered to very healthy levels for my age. For most of my life it was 90/70 and in recent years it climbed to about 120-130/90. Now its back to 110 over 70 or 80 depending on the day it's taken. Much healthier. I no longer salt my foods at all, I don't eat prepared foods with salt either. And in fact when I looked at the canned 'organic' beans and other foods I was eating, theyw eren't that healthy. They had salt added; cans have bisphenols that are endocrine disrupters etc; in fact, preparing your foods naturally is the best idea. So I'm making salt free beans int he crockpot with onions, carrots and garlic, and they're delicious. I'm cooking my own fish and flavoring it with tomatoes and garlic etc. I get salt-free raw cottage cheese from the Amish farmers)

But it would be an equal shame if the 25-30% of people who develop heart disease or die early of excess salt didn't know about these studies and limit their salt intake, and especially if they have lyme and/or cardiac problems with lyme, it is more than a shame if they damage themselves with high doses of salt while thinking their responses are herxheimers.

Absolutely! That is why it is so important to have research that would account for all these different variables, so that we can better determine what our needs might be, etc., and/or speak to a professional that could give us proper guidance. If we do anything in excess, it might be a good idea to get a professional opinion as we are quite fragile and it is impossible to know what might tip the scales.

Salt/c can help some and be very detrimental to others. I am glad to hear that your blood pressure has now normalized and that you survived that difficult ordeal over at lymestrategies.
