I've looked at tons of old magnesium posts and saw lots of debate about which is the best. Sounds like the three most popular are glycinate, malate and citrate. I have malate and citrate, it sounds like I could take either one.

But I saw no info on WHEN you're supposed to take it? With or without food? And if with food, if taking with antibiotics too, is that a problem?

Also can magnesium cause nausea?

Thanks,

- Andrew

I'm glad you asked Andrew...
because I am wondering the same thing. [Smile]

I've tried 3 or 4 different forms of magnesium and none did anything. I just got some Mag Malate and the bottle says to take with meals.

I'm assuming not to take it with Zith but don't know about Malarone. I think Doxy can't be taken with minerals either; I'm not sure what else.

Antibiotics often seemed to come with an insert that has warnings about taking medicine within 2 hours before or after taking calcium or other minerals such as magnesium or zinc.

But the minerals are best to take with meals so that the body has all the stuff it needs to absorb them. That's what I've read anyway.

Also, magnesium taken alone can lead to getting the runs because your body can't absorb it all and for some reason decides to clear it out of the system too fast.

Hope that is helpful to somebody.

Thank you, Thank you, Ruth Ruth

I am just enough out of it to have not thought of looking at the printouts or checking a website. [Roll Eyes]

Well, minerals are best with meals... and I HAVE to take my abx with meals too... so I guess I am going to take them all together.

Eat smaller meals and more of them because you are suppose to take supplements at least an hour and a half to 2 hours apart from meds.

I wonder if perhaps you should just be taking vitamins and limit some of your other supplements a bit until your digestion is working better?

My solution for when I was on antibiotics was to take them away from main meals with some crackers and juice. Just enough to have something else in the stomach when they were in there. Then the supplements could be taken with the bigger meals where they could do the most good. I guess!

Take the Magnesium 2 hours before or after you take abx. I think the Magnesium Malate is best absorbed (either Marnie or Gigi wrote that in old posts). You also need to take B-complex vitamins with the Magnesium, from what I read.

I'm giving my son Magnesium Glycinate but will try the Malate when we finish this bottle.

I suggest you click on "Search" and type in "Magnesium". Read the old posts - they are very informative. Hope this helps.

A good form of magnesium for you now while your digestion is acting up would be Hyland's mag phos 6 x. It melts under you tongue and should be taken at least 15 minutes after eating or drinking when your mouth is clean. It helped me kick out my migraine pain today. I always keep some around.

Some people here have used magnesium sulfate by IM injection. It's inexpensive at around $25 for a box of twenty-five 2 ml. vials. Each vial is one gram, which is about X2 the RDA. Using this method, you can bypass the digestive tract entirely and are assured of absorption. If you add 1 ml. of 1% Lidocaine, it's not very uncomfortable at all. When I started using it, I needed it about every five days. These days I start to get symptoms after a week or ten days.

It really works for twitches and paiful muscle cramps. It's unclear to me whether it corrects deficiency situations or simply works because of magnesium's antispasmotic qualities. Perhaps it's both. Dr. B wrtites that Lymies tend to get magnesium and B vitamins.

This is one of the suggestions in Dr. B's Diagnostic and Treatment Guidelines.

I have read in many sources to definitely NOT take your meds with any calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc (or even with foods high in them with some meds). They can chemically bind to the meds and thereby make them less bioavailable, so need to be kept 1.5 to 2 hr. away from taking of any meds.

Even taking calcium along with your multivitamin can reduce its effectiveness, as the calcium can bind some of the minerals in it and make them less available for the body. I take both my calcium and magnesium separate from other supplements or my meds. Dividing the doses is better for you, but harder to work into the schedule and still keep separate.

You probably will have to plot out a schedule to work it all out. It's a nuisance, but can be done if you think it through. A watch with an alarm or a little kitchen timer on a neckstring can be helpful to remind you till you get into a memorized routine.

Supplements don't require a whole meal, just a snack will do. I know my meds need to be with a whole meal to avoid stomach upset, though.

I've seen it reported several places that magnesium absorption is enhanced when it is taken with protein.

I use CALM from Peter Gillham's. It fizzes up in hot water. I take it before bed, because it's relaxing. Loose stool in the morning=took too much.

I take it with my other vitamins and herbs. I'm not taking any antibiotics now.

However, I do take iron, copper, and multi-minerals in the middle of the day separately, as these react negatively with vitamin E, among others.

Best,

Cass A
