Both of my sons have had MRIs of their jaws and both have varying degrees of arthritis with their associated TMJ.

We are working with a specialist who is fitting them for upper and lower apparatuses that are to be worn permanently.....not just a night guard.

They also have had x-rays that reveal bottom molars that need to come out.

I have done a search and am copying pertinent information to take to the oral surgeon whom our TMJ specialist recommended.

We hope to get this scheduled three weeks before fall semester begins.

Any advice?

I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago. When I was symptomatic but not yet diagnosed with Lyme.

I did get dry socket, which was painful. All it required though was a trip back to the surgeon who put a numbing solution, that tasted like chai tea, in the sockets. For some reason, women get this more than men.

I also discovered I look like Stockard Channing when my jaw is swollen [Embarrassed]

My advice is to make sure you get a prescription of enough pain meds. With Lyme, the pain can always be greater than in a healthy person.

Ask the surgeon to explain the symtpoms of dry socket to your sons so, if they get it, they get it treated ASAP to reduce the pain. I think I waited a day and that was just stupid.

Finally, make sure they don't talk a lot the first day. My mom was with me, and we were both very chatty. I think that added to dry socket. And maybe explains why women get it more than men... [Big Grin]

I just had the lowers out a couple of weeks ago and the uppers out about 5 years ago. No problems and some of the arthritic symptoms that could have been lyme-like went away.

I took amox for awhile before and after and a few ultrams for the pain.

I'm glad those things are out of there, there was infection under both of them.
