I've used B12 (cyanocobalamin) because it will clear aphthous ulcers in my mouth overnight and seemed to reduce tingling in teh extremities, when I first stared using it. They ahve never hurt much. However, I've always taken the shots in the butt.

Tree,

Don't know about your reaction to the B12 shot, but I know when I did Tindamax, I was told to take B6 with it as Tini depletes it?

Since the B vitamins work together, maybe this had something to do with it.

I did B12 shots daily for 3 months with no noticeable changes, but at the time was so sick I probably wouldn't have noticed.

I've used the B12 shots twice a week for the last year. I take a B6 and folic acid supplement with it. I haven't noticed any improvements with Lyme symptoms. It does seem like I've caught less colds since starting it though.

I used b 12 shots for about a year. I did sleep slightly better but sub lingual does just as much good for me. I gave them to myself in the thigh IM. They would sting sometimes but I don't recall burning however burning at the injection site is listed as a side effect.

Well heck, at least the burning felt good. [Big Grin]

I used to give Daughter B-12 shots every day.....she said there was no difference. She gets B-12 in her IV once a week now. The IV's seem to help with her energy. She is also on a very low dose of testosterone cream rubbed on a soft part of her skin (inside arms, legs). She says it has helped lots with her energy.

LLMD sent her to an MD at a Fibro and Fatigue center to build her up some so she could handle more Lyme and Co treatment. The IV's seem to have done the trick. She is not using the walker any longer.

HUGS,

As recommended in Burrascano's treatment guidelines, I have been on the very strong and more pure methylcobalamin b12 (only available at compound pharmacies) injections for a very long time. I have had no pain associated with the injection, as long as you hit a muscle and use a one inch needle, it is no big deal at all. Compared to Bicillin IM injections - they are nothing pain-wise.

Most people don't "feel" a difference right at the start, but long term, I have learned to love them.

I believe they have helped my nervous system and helped with create a better sleep pattern and much more. Here is more info here: http://tinyurl.com/2j3g6n

Shoulders still feel pretty good lower back hurts worse needs to crack feeling its right at the stage where it cracks or gets extremly worse.

Yep I know about b vitamins reating binding abx's the shot came in the middle of the day and it felt great !! my eyes even cleared some and energy was there wasnt tired from drivew back at all but lower back pain increased alot shoulders still feel better today.

I think Iam going to see about one of these a month and check out sub lingle b vitamins deffinately
I told my dad about it when I took him to his 3 month dr appt he shocked me when he said thats exactly how he felt when he got that shot too. This is confusing to say the least.

Iam feeling pretty good except lower back pain thats it could this all be from one b 12 shot in the butt?
I am alert and feel pretty good one day after the shot.
This cant be the reason this is wierd
Heck if thats the case I would get a b 12 shot every other day hahahaha

I take B complex now I wonder if they arent being absorbed????

I take them, but I do know all doses are not created equal. I take also a very strong dose which comes from a compounding pharmacy in Colorado. My regular compounding pharmacies did not know it could be gotten as strong as the stuff I get in Colo. My osteopath didn't even know.....he does now.

I am not really heavy and tend to have lanky arms and legs. I manage to be able to use an insulin needle. It's 30 gauge and maybe a 1/2 inch long. It's like a hair. I rarely feel the needle going in unless I hit a vien I think, then it hurts.

I am a big sissy when it comes to shots, but I am almost addicted to my B12. I feel the difference within hours. Example, I have been a little run down feeling and I was expecting company PLUS going to the Wild Animal Park with my family which included 4 grandchildren. Some spent the night and the next day I made Turkey and all the stuff and had my daughters new in laws over. I was worried, cuz I didn't know if I could keep up and actually be able to carry on a normal conversation.

Started daily shots a day or two before, my energy picked right up and I breezed right through the 3 days.

Get a high enough dose and you WILL notice a difference that is well worth the stick. Oh by the way I have also taken a lower dose which was NOT worth the stick.

My LLMD says DAILY, I don't do daily but whenever I need energy I do.

Does it help boost the immune system? I think I need to go back to taking them more often...at least every other day until I get over this sinus infection.

I know that pix of nerve endings from somewhere? Oh yeah, I've felt it for many years now. No wonder it looked familiar. Reminds me of how my brain feels sometimes.

I hope your recent problem is getting better Tree? Have you been shoveling snow lately?

I have an order from gastro doc on testing my B-12, but I couldn't wait around for the lab to take my blood, due to another appt. It's across town and I haven't had time to get back over there.

This reminded me I need to do that. Take care.

I've been taking B12 shots for about a week now, thanks to one of your recent posts. I used to take it sublingually, but I have heard the shots are better. I understand it can take about two weeks to get in a full loading dose. Thanks for the info!

Sublingual B12 has helped me a lot; I buy the methylcobalamin. My energy has gone up. And my left armpit does not have that distinctive ammonia-like smell I've had for 2 years. Based on what I am learning about the liver, I do believe it is helping me detox.

As well, after saunas, I feel good, but the effect is not as dramatic as before. In other words, I was depending on the saunas for detox...since my liver was not detoxing as efficiently as it could have been.

Just my thoughts...

B12 rocks! I have taken methylcobalamin b12 shots since November and saw an immediate improvement in my energy. I can't imagine not having this in my treatment.

I take 20ml very other day or every day if needed. I can tell in the morning if I'm going to need the extra dose to get me through the day. Like others, if I know a high energy day is in store, I load up.

Wantabe...Why not take more each time so you don't have to do shots every day or twice a day? Ouch!

It's worth it to me!! I do 1cc at a time. At first, I did them everyday, but as I progressed, I'm now taking them whenever I think about it...sometimes every week, sometimes every two weeks.

Hi tree!

Yes, I've been using them off and on for about five years with very good results.

I also add folic acid and B complex to the syringe....need rx for them too but it all works together and supports the workings.

Since I use IV mag sulfate......I add these three to the bag.....painless.

Has anyone here had an allergic reaction to B12 shots?

lymetoo,
Didn't know it was an option to take more at once-

I'll check w/LLMD Monday @ my appointment. I'll let you know what she says... My 1ast post was wrong- I'm taking .2ml(20 units)daily or every other day.

Really don't have pain w/shots-once in a while a bit of a sting-not much. I use my husband's diabetic syringes-small needle. The occasional sting is well worth the energy I get from it!

Thanks again Tree. B12 rocks!

Although my lyme symptoms seem to be gone, I had still been experiencing fatigue and a severe irrepressible chocolate deficiency.

Now I just feel how I imagine a normal person feels after losing an hour of sleep.

I dropped several pounds in the last two weeks without consciously changing my routine. I'm just not so hungry, and I'm more interested in being active.

I did two CC's a day for two days, then one cc a day for a week. Now I think 3/4 cc daily feels like good maintenance for a while.

I also added NADH (another B vit and mitochondria supporter) into my routine last week, so that may be contributing.

My ND gave me hydrocobalamin, and I'm almost out. I hear that methylcobalamin is better. Any opinions?

A whole body rash, still recovering after 10 days.
Happened a few days after b12 injections and supposedly b12 is known to cause rashes rarely.

Methylcobalamin is the best B12 and improves energy and stamina and can help repair nerve damage. Get your LLMD to write you a Rx for it, and get it from a compounding pharmacy. I get mine at Fallon Pharmacy, in Latham, NY.

I love love love my b12 shots

I do one every day. It's only a really small amount in the syringe but boy does it increase my energy.

I get mine at Fallon Pharmacy. They come pre-filled. They are also in the diabetic syringes so I don't feel a thing.

Tomorrow I start my Bicillin shots though...now that needle is alot bigger. [Eek!]

My b12 aren't really low..just borderline. B12 tests aren't always very accurate though. It is worth giving it a try.

My regular doc just gave me a prescription for B-12 shots (at my request...and he agreed it would be a good idea)
When I picked up the prescription today it was a vial of Cyanocobalamin and empty insulin needles.
What the heck???
Anyone else get Vit B like this and this type?
I notice most others use Methylcobalamin. Any differences????

Posted by kitkat32 (Member # 9682) on :

Hi Cordor,

Yes, there is a difference. I don't know the whole technical aspect of it but this is some of what the pharmacy told me. They said the regular b12 isn't as strong and it also has to be broken down by our livers.

The Methyl type doesn't need to be broken down and it is ready for our body to use right away.

Some people say they don't see any results with regular b12. I myself did. I had an immediate improvement of energy.

I do the methyl type now and the pharmacy is listed above. It needs to be compounded and it is generally not covered by health insurance.

Hope this helps and I am sure someone else will be along to explain the other differences.

My husband will be doing subcutaneous methylcobalamin soon. I'm still hopping through the pharmacy hoops.

First something was wrong with the prescription and they had to contact the doctor's office. Then when they called to say it was ready I found out that no syringes had been ordered.

How am I supposed to inject without needles? Someday the doctor's office will get back once again to the pharmacy and I'll actually get the product. Then a friend who is a nurse will be teaching me how to do it.

I'm worn out from all of this.

I suggest you get some b12 shots your intrinsic factor may be shot like mine.
Get a shot at your LLMDs next time and watch for changes.
I know the aching dropped way down in me in a about 2 hrs. Enough that I knew this was causing alot of my problems.
Give it a try please!
I have been off abxs since march 08

B12 can also be low from taking acid reducers like Prilosec and Nexium.

B12...yay! Its the only thing in this menagerie of treatments that made a substantial difference so far.

In the beginning of this Lyme journey, I tested very low for B12. (Like 200? Range is 400-800?) I started supplements. Next test was like 230. I wasn't absorbing the B12.

This led to monthly injections which, over a year, lead to weekly IM injections. Until I had nerve damage on the tops of my thighs. With weekly injections, my levels were still barely above 400!

Now I'm on subcutaneous inj. every other day and went from 1mg/ml to 25mg/ml. The needle is painless, but when the serum hits the spot, it s a few tears for a few minutes.

Still, now that I have B12, I can stay awake past 3:30pm and the fatigue is comparatively mild. I've tested for Anemia, celiac disease and even had a endoscopy. They found nothing, of course.

B12 def. is common in Lyme patients, my new LLMD said, and there is no real reports of OD'ing....so if it makes you feel good, halleluja!!!

I'd like to know how/why Lyme decreases B12 absorption...

Hi folks:

I am one who is in remission so I've been scarce on this site.

Is the damage to the stores of B12 permanent?

I can't tell why I'm tired these days: I was just diagnosed as hypothyroid (despite my requests for testing over a year ago), have a sleep disorder that requires a CPAP machine that will arrive tomorrow.

I was taking b12 orally for quite a while, but decided to stop since no one was telling me otherwise. My regular doc is testing me, but I don't get that test until October.

Thanks.
Cara

My husband injects a mixture of B12 + P5P + methyl folate for methylation support and alleviation of fatigue. WOW! It's da bomb! More energy, better sleep, higher level of consciousness.

I've been taking 25mg methylcobalamin IM every night since the beginning of July, so a little over 2mo.

It's only been in the last couple of weeks that I've seen a noticeable difference in my energy levels.

I also switched abx a couple of weeks ago and started new anti-depressant and sleep meds then as well.

I had felt miserable (think I was herxing) for 2wk before the med switch, but have been getting better since then.

It's hard to tell for sure what exactly is making a difference, but I can say the B12 does not give me the immediate boost of energy like it seems to for so many others.

I've missed a couple of times and there was no difference in how I felt because of it.

Maybe my B12 stores were just too far depleted for it to help me immediately? =/

I've heard that the white half-moons at the base of your fingernails are an indicator of deficiency in B12 if they are missing, and that the thumbs are the last to go.

I have only small ones on my thumbs, none on the rest of my fingers. Same as when I started the B12 shots.

Shouldn't my stores be up some by now??

Chris

I want to make it known that sublingual methylcobalamin lozenges are well absorbed and alot easier and cheaper ($3 monthly) than shots. Jarrow Formulas makes some yummy ones with xylitol that you dissolve under your tongue. After a couple months of the 1mg lozenges, my B12 tested way above my lab's reference range, and now I'm taking a 5mg lozenge daily so you can imagine what that will do.

The standard line that "B12 isn't well absorbed orally" is true. However, sublingual lozenges are absorbed through the lining of the mouth and directly into the bloodstream, like chewing tobacco. Try it for a couple months and retest your B12, I bet you'll throw those shots out the window.

Iam not sure I think once you build back up your stores and your off abx's and if the intrinsic factor returns I would say no not a perminent condition.
But if the intrinsic factor dosent return then shots yes? or if it returns but is not up to to par or as good as it was then occasional shots?
Iam still taking my shots and I have been off abx's since march 08. I am also taking b complex vitamins and mag,& acidophilis.
Seems like I need a shot about every four days some times 6 days?
