Turns out I have HIGH magnesium as tested by the Ionized mag test which is supposed to show the bioavailable magnesium, not the bound mag like in the typical serum tests.

Of course this leaves me and my lyme doc confused because typically mag is low.

We ran the test twice, with a one month lapse and with me cutting out mag supplimentation in between. It only decreased the test slightly.

Anyone else have High mag?

I know regular serum Mg tests are worthless, so I recently had my Red Blood Cell Mg tested, thinking it would be low.

I'd been taking lots of oral Mg for years, but still have palpitations, and thought I could use the inevitible low test results to convince my Cardio to teach me how to inject Mg.

Imagine my surprise when it came back above the normal range! I guess I must be absorbing it pretty well then, which is good, since a couple of months after the Mg test was done, I was found to have serious malabsorption problems that require prescription enzymes.

After seeing the above normal Mg test results, I tried to cut the dose a bit, since high doses are hard on the kidneys, but the lower dose made me constipated, so I went back to the old amt. of Mg.

Were you told to take less due to your test results?

Klutzo

P.S. My folic acid also tested way above normal range. My PCP told me to cool it on supps. of folate or I'd wreck my kidneys, but my holistic doc said "Bah, you can't have too much folate."

Thanks klutzo and treepatrol.

I wasnt told to do anything in terms of mg intake. Because the lyme doc doesnt know what to do with HIGH mag, only low.

The ionized mag test is considered to be the newest best test of bioavailable mg in your system. But it is not well known or well understood.
