The characteristic clinical presentation of cat scratch disease is subacute regional lymphadenopathy; nevertheless, 5-25% of Bartonella henselcie infections may present an atypical or systemic form, with potential eye involvement.
We describe three clinical cases of ocular bartonellosis in two adolescents and one young adult, who had close contact with cats; all of them presented persistent fever ranging from 15 to 21 days, and two of them developed a sudden unilateral loss of visual acuity associated with optic neuritis.
The other patient presented retinal choroiditis and unilateral retinal microgranulomas, with normal visual acuity.
Patients received macrolides as sole antimicrobial or in association with rifampin, and one patient was additionally treated with systemic corticoids.
The outcome was favorable in two patients; one patient developed a permanent visual deficit.
Ocular bartonellosis must be suspected in patients with close contact to cats or with cat scratches whom develop persistent fever and sudden loss of visual acuity.

I'm really glad you posted this, as I'm about to get checked out by an opthalmologist for my sudden vision problems in my right eye, and I think bartonella is my biggest problem.

my right eye is also bothering me a lot. i saw an optamologist on thursday.
he said all looks okay- just dry eye and floaters. i keep wondering if he is missing something.
he said optic nerve looks fine. are there any other tests i should have - he basically dialated my eyes and looked in them with (that microscope thing).

My hubby has had head pain and eye pain only for six years..5 yrs ago the eye dr said he had Glaucoma...his pressure was off the wall..he has had eye drops and all kinds of other test..last yr he finally got a pos. for Lyme...started med, now on meds for 15 mts...I for got he told eye dr. he has lyme and could his eye pain be that..of course she said no...well after being on meds for 15 mts he went last mth. and low and behold his pressure droped to 12.. witch is normal...now i don't think Glaucoma just ups and go away like that.. of course she said the meds could have been working...after 5 yrs!!!!I just wonder if there is anything else we can do for Lyme in eye and head..his pain is never ending and sits in dark room and can't even watch TV let alone computer...anyone else have eye pain all the time..thanks madge Posted by Tincup (Member # 5829) on :

He is light and sound...also with his head pain he get dizzy...he trys so hard to enjoy the grand kids but they understand...hopeful the meds are starting to do something..six mts after the bite he got sick...told all dr. but 2 test were neg...so of course they said no to lyme...i always knew...but back then there was no lyme dr. nore did anyone around here know what to do...when we met this couple they told us about a lyme dr. and he was so happy to have lyme because he really thought he was going crazy...you all know this story..but thanks all of you here and i'll keep all in my prayers Posted by on :
