Permanently Disabled for good?

So people coming here seeking a Doctor cant get a PM?

why are pm's permanently disabled?

Posted by WildCondor (Member # 434) on :

This is really silly. Why would you guys disable this? How can we send people LLMD names without posting it in public in the board. Makes no sense and there is no explanation?

I don't understand that with all the Lyme literate people on this forum, some here for over 10 years like myself, you do not "hire" some new moderators to help keep this website organized on a daily basis. With all the new members this seems very overwhelming and illogical. Hope you iron out the kinks soon. Good luck! [Smile]

Hi LymeNet Users, [hi]

Effective immediately, PM's have been re-enabled.
We re-thought the decision to disable PM, which was done because of PM problems being reported.
Following is from Tom, our system / tech guru:
OK, I've enabled PMs again, but I won't address any further messages regarding problems with the function as it is known to be broken at this time and I can make no guarantees about it until we complete our upgrade to the new UBB.Threads software (which may not occur for several weeks).

-Tom

Wild,
I do not believe it would be prudent to bring on new Moderators until we perform the upgrades and stabilize the system. Appreciate the "constructive" criticism ... your point is clearly understood.

Take care,

That's not true.

lymetoo; until we get the NEW UPGRADE; the way it stands right now, this is true ... NO PMS!

Tom doesn't have the volunteer hours to work on all the problems of MISSENT PMS, etc. He's spending his time on upgrade only as he's stated.

once the upgrade is going and they work out all the bugs, then i'm sure they will have PMs available then. we are all looking forward to that again.

note also, lou b did NOT say one way or the other .... just talking about the future upgrade. [Wink]

so I stand by my statement as made. [hi]

Hi LymeNet Users, [hi]

As I posted in my edited post above:

Following is from Tom, our system / tech guru:
"OK, I've enabled PMs again, but I won't address any further messages regarding problems with the function as it is known to be broken at this time and I can make no guarantees about it until we complete our upgrade to the new UBB.Threads software (which may not occur for several weeks).

Disabling PM's effectively disabled user to user private communication, user reports of problems to Moderators and the ability to send LLMD referrals and newbie info to users in need of that info.

After a re-analysis we decided the benefit of re-enabling the PM function far out weighed the impact of the problems (the PM function is working 99%+ of the time) while we implement the upgrades.

We are a victim of our own success as we have seen a rapid growth in users and usage, including the total number connected who are all posting and viewing pages in addition to running searches, since the migration to the current server and UBB Classic 6.5.0 in September 2005.

Tom, our system / tech guru, is working on a LymeNet Flash migration from the current UBB Classic 6.5.0 to UBB Classic 6.7.0 so that we can then migrate to UBB.Threads.

For you tech-heads, here's Tom's explanation of the current LymeNet problems (connection failures, slow response, hangs, incomplete page loads, etc) and the planned solution:
"UBB.Classic 6.5.0 is at the root of these problems. In particular, the search feature. Each individual search causes the server load and disk I/O to go to 100% for about 15-20 seconds, and when users get frustrated with waiting and hit "Submit" a second or third time it generates multiple parallel processes, causing the load to go even higher.

UBB.Classic 6.7.0 may have a somewhat better search algorithm, but I agree it won't likely solve the problem. However it is a mandatory step in getting us to the final state of UBB.Threads which has a database-based search which should be very quick and efficient. In addition, the move to UBB.Threads will also mean that it will be running on the new/fast VMware server farm which, in itself, will give us tremendous performance improvement.
-Tom"

Bottom line ... PM's have been re-enabled while we work on the migration to upgrade the software and improve the overall performance of the LymeNet Flash.

Take care,

Sure was hard to work with those in the Seeking Forum when it was off.

But glad it's back on!

GOD BLESS YOU TOM AND LOU B! [group hug] [kiss]
***************************

We really appreciate your changing your minds so we could get out the LLMD names fast and in a SAFE way allowing us the privacy of our home emails!!!

Special thanks also that I can get my newbie package out that way too until I can finish getting it completely reorganized, and then posted as Treepatrol's so folks can go there on their own for info!!!

I love you both, Tom and Lou, [group hug] [kiss] but don't tell my dear hubby of 33.5 years! lol [lol]

so I stand corrected; PMS ARE BACK, and we don't have to wait until we get the upgrade!!!

Sorry, I'll be the mean guy here...

1. The web site performance & reliability is terrible with this site and can be easily improved. 30 seconds for a page to load? 20 for others?! [Frown]

2. The administration support to the site is lacking terribly; tech support is hard to find when problems are found by members. The PM thing was absurd and insensitive to an entire community.

3. Posts that are inappropriate or in the wrong forum are not moderated or moved to the proper forum.

Y'all, this is not rocket science, we should expect better...especially for ill patients! [bonk]

I am very familiar with this software application and would be happy to improve the performance, organization and administration of this community.

If folks at the LDA are interested, I'd be happy to make myself available for a phone call interview.

This is a very important, helpful and supportive community for many people. Increasingly so every day! Let's expect more from the LDA! Ask for help and you will receive!

Thanks Lou B.
Appreciate it, as you know I have been volunteering to help you guys for years. So many of us get frustrated over time when we are here every day and we could be helping you make things flow more smoothly. Hope you work it out! [Smile]

cold feet,

i suggest you copy your comments above and send a PM to administrator, lou bachman.

go to top of medical, and click on his name where you can send a pm from there...

LYMENET NEEDS ALL THE "UNPAID VOLUNTEERS" AS POSSIBLE! we all have different skill levels. i'm sure this has been a long 16 plus years for these 7 people to being doing EVERYTHING BY THEMSELVES!

thanks for offering to help... [group hug]
