Just read that taking Biaxin with food can prevent its effectiveness. Is this correct?

I was checking potential med interactions on drugdigest.com (before adding in a new med), and stumbled across the Biaxin issue accidentally.

I have been taking it with food, since most meds cause GI issues for me if taken on an empty stomach.

Do you take it with or without food, and if you take it without - does it upset your stomach?

Thanks!

I was told to take it with good so that it doesn't upset my stomach by my pharmacist. Maybe someone who has experience with it both ways will come along.

I am taking Biaxin too. I'd like to know more about it, since GERD has already become an issue for me on it. Makes no difference to the GERD whether I take it with food or on an empty stomach.

So, up for more information.

If you still want your stomach intact when you're finished treating Lyme, take it WITH food!!

I would never take ANY abx without food. No way.

I take it after a meal, and it is DEFINITELY working! [Smile]

Thanks! Just wanted to double check to see if I'd missed the obvious on Biaxin and was somehow lessening the effectiveness.

I've taken a fair amount of Biaxin (always with food) throughout treatment & it's consistently given me herxes and improvement. So hopefully it's just as effective.

Pass the food, please, I'd like to keep my stomach!

Save the stomach!! You'll need it in good shape now and especially later. You don't want leaky gut syndrome on top of everything else.

Biaxin is made especially to be taken with or without food.

Stomach acid has no effect on it being broken down.

This was in fact why they came up with it in the first place because erithromycin had to be taken on a full stomach.

Thanks, Lymetoo and Lymeherx!

I'm going to keep taking it with food because I do like my stomach.

I will mention it at next LLMD appt, though.

For anyone who's interested, this is the quote from drugdigest.com that caused the concern:

"FOOD may interact with CLARITHROMYCIN (in Biaxin)

Food may decrease the absorption of certain forms of

clarithromycin from the stomach. If this happens, then

potentially less clarithromycin would be available for the

body to use and blood levels of the drug could become too

low. This could make clarithromycin less effective. To

minimize the risk of this potential interaction, take a dose of

clarithromycin at least 2 hours before or at least 2 hours after

eating a meal or snack. Discuss this potential interaction with

your healthcare provider at your next appointment, or sooner

if you think you are having problems."

Yes isint that funny that food will decrease the absorbtion?

Either way food doesnt effect the way that my stomach feels on it!

Sometimes it just makes you nautious and having food in your stomach makes it worse (if that makes sense).
