Substitution of manganese for iron is also important in the bacterial pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease.

The B. burgdorferi genome project has revealed the absence of iron-containing membrane proteins and annotated genes encoding proteins such as superoxide dismutase that are predicted to contain manganese rather than iron.

The absence of iron and iron-containing proteins is proposed to allow B. burgdorferi to survive in a host that restricts iron, an action that normally limits microbial growth and thus prevents infection.

In this way, the B. burgdorferi genome may have evolved by eliminating the requirement for what is usually an essential element.

"All bacterial pathogens described to date have developed specialized systems to acquire iron from their hosts,"said microbiologist Frank Gherardini. "Current dogma states that to be successful in humans, bacteria must overcome strict iron limitations that the human body imparts on them. Although iron is abundant in humans, the amount of free iron is well below the levels required to support the growth of most bacteria.

To our surprise, we found that B. burgdorferi doesn't even require iron. In fact, iron is extremely toxic to it."

Activate COX-1-> PGE-1 -> HO-1 -> Fe (iron) + CO + biliverdin (green, absorbs red -> yellow...wavelengths -> Na channels closed.

What does this MEAN? What should I DO?

Posted by Marnie (Member # 773) on :

Far infrared, at the 880nM wavelength appears to trigger COX-1 -> HO-1 release.

HO-1 is a heat shock protein.

then -> release of Fe bound...and Fe destroys Bb.

This wavelength provides just enough heat to trigger the release of a critical protein, but not so much to destroy this protein.

Well if iron is toxic for them, let's eat more IRON?

Or?

OK dangerous at too high levels, but....

Iron suppl. must be good then!

That is interesting.

So, either use an 880 device (there seem to be other ones besides the German one, which we can't get shipped to us in the US, unfortunately) or consume more iron? Sparkle found and is using an effective US one that has 880 frequency, right?

Must be careful of iron overdose. Maybe bloodwork every month or so to check iron levels?

I don't think you can overdo iron via food. It would have to be a supplement that would run a risk of overdose, but can you get enough iron to damage lyme from food?

I wonder if the homeopathic cell salt form of iron - ferrum phos would also be a good way to supplement iron without over doing it.

Truly a remarkable organism, eh?

Marnie, I find what you wrote about the sodium channel at the end interesting. I've noticed that taking Klonopin (an anticonvulsant drug) generally gives me a brief, but marked, reduction in cognitive symptoms.

Does clonazepam (Klonopin) exert its anticonvulsant effect by blocking the sodium channel? Could it be that one of the ways in which Borrelia causes cognitive dysfunction is by stimulating overexcitation of neurons? Did you mean to imply that activating COX-1 has the collateral benefit of stopping excitotoxicity in addition to releasing iron into the blood?

You'll have to excuse me if these are stupid questions. I know almost nothing about biochemistry.

I use the LightWorks by SOTA. It costs $295. I brought mine from http://www.elixa.com/light/lightworks.htm

It took 3 days for delivery. I'm not sure they still have them in stock but you can call them.

Some people bought them from eBay or other sellers.

How are you doing with it?

For months my nails were getting big deep ridges in, and all splitting , not across as is usual, but down towards my fingers.

After searching an answer to this, I decided to try some OTC Iron tabs, my nails are now restored beautifully .

So I must got that right.

But the Herx that come along now are much stronger on the same dose of ABX. This has been really scaring me. Could this be the answer ???????

When Marnie posted this I just went, OMG !!!!!!

My iron levels were dangerously low. I could not take regular iron but my ND suggested Stinging Nettle as it has a good iron content.

After a few months, the lab tests were wonderful, after battling amemia for a long time.

When PFK levels drop (this enzyme controls glycolysis)...anemia happens.

from "Lyme Disease: A Look Beyond Antibiotics"
published by Dr. K. in 2005. www.neuraltherapy.com

(under Minerals)

"Amazingly, the most depleted minerals in our Lyme patients are often copper, magnesium, manganese ( in Lyme) and iron (in Babesiosis). Bb and Bartonella need magnesium to duplicate and deplete the host's body rapidly. Copper and iron have all but disappeared from most of our supplements based on faulty interpretation of hair analysis. The immune system uses those 2 metals in the process of phagocytosis. They are the main constituent of the enzymes (or ``bullets'') the immune cells use in the battle against the invaders. Oxidized used-up iron and copper get displaced into the extracellular compartment and body fluids and appears in the hair and skin, as the body's most efficient way of excreting toxins without hurting the kidneys. This has led to the dangerous and in its consequence catastrophic assumption, that these metals are the enemy and need to be restricted. It is true, that oxidized metals pose a danger and have to be reduced (=substitution of electrons) or eliminated. However, when copper and iron are needed and substituted appropriately, major improvements have been observed. Appropriate antioxidant treatment can reduce these metals. Homeopathic copper and iron will lead to beneficial redistribution of these metals and makes them bio-available again."

Take care.

What is the role of zinc in all of this. Does zinc get displaced in any way to cause some of the fatigue and poor sleep patterns many lymies get. I suspect zinc is another constituent metal getting displace. If I'm not mistaken zinc is important in generating seratonin.

Have read Marnie's post 's, So , If Iron levels are low ( it will allow Bb to survive in Host )

But taking high level's of Iron ( If you don't need it won't work )

And of course we know would be dangerous.

So Bb has a party !!! if your Anaemic ( UK spelt ) ???

Very interesting . Thank you.

PS. I have a very low if any Iron rich diet, so will have to take more care in the future .
Hope my poor little brain has got this right. !!!

Here is a very simple way to activate Lyme Disease. Take an antibiotic, 5 days later, begin doing some mild "exertion" activities that trigger symptoms. Add 1000mg of Magnesium (Oxide is fine), watch symptoms flare intensely. Lower the dose of the antibiotic for 1 week to half dose.

The flare-up will continue inspite of antibiotics. Borrelia Burgdorferi has an extreme affinity for this particular mineral, requiring it to perform vital functions.

Increase the antibiotic back up a week later. I would not attempt this if you're very weak or extremely sick -- this is more along the lines of something for patients who are sick, but stable enough to take a beating.

The infection activates, as a result of the immune system lowering during the exertion. The antibiotic then attacks, then the magenisium forces them to "choose" in a sense, to chase the magenisium, causing a much heavier die off, as many more bacteria persish as a consequence of increasing the antibiotic again, and the immune response coming back.

Blackstrap Molasses

It is a great source of iron and calcium, but it's also a source of potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Many people claim to have reversed their gray hair with it. Could be due to the copper content, as copper deficiency can lead to prematurely gray hair.

Copper, an essential component of many enzymes, plays a role in a wide range of physiological processes including iron utilization, elimination of free radicals, development of bone and connective tissue, and the production of the skin and hair pigment called melanin ... Using two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to sweeten your morning cereal and the coffee or tea you drink during the day will supply you with 14.0% of the daily recommended value for copper. (whfoods.com)

Marnie, Would this be good source? I've been taking this for few months. Do feel more energetic.

Research Shows For The First Time That Lyme Disease Bacterium Does Not Require Iron To Infect Host

excerpt -

Apparently, B. burgdorferi belongs to a unique category of pathogenic bacteria that use a novel strategy to overcome iron limitation in the human host.

Just how this new discovery can be used in developing either new vaccines or new therapies for those infected with Lyme disease is not yet clear.

While a vestigal iron pathway may still exist in Borrelia burgdorferi, simply adding iron to a diet or as a medical therapy would do little good.

Still, because other metals such as manganese are used by the bacterium, the discovery of how iron is unneeded by the bug could point toward an entirely new way to limit the occurrence and severity of the disease in humans.

"The ultimate goal of the bacterium is not to wipe out the host," says Gherardini. "It's just to find another place to live. This should tell use a lot about how they do that."

Sparkle . Hello.

The beginning of that article also say's that ( Iron is extremely toxic to Bb. )

Bb may have evolved by eliminating the requirement of Iron, but restricted Iron allows Bb to survive in Host. As stated in other article.

Extra Iron won't help if you have normal level's as I stated. But what if you have low level's ????

This may then create a more suitable environment for it. !!!!!! That's how I understand it anyway.
Did you miss the first bit of the article you quote ?????

It's very confusing to me. I don't really know.

If one part of this says that extra iron is good to take to get rid of Lyme but the conclusion of the article ends in saying it doesn't matter - it's a bit hard to comprehend.

I'm no scientist...

I guess I have to study more.

Sparkle it is INTRACELLULAR Fe levels that "count".

Looks like Bb maybe using transferin-Mn.

And go here too:

http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=069337

Looks like someone is trying to justify IV Mg to "wake up the bacteria".

That is not the case.

As ATP is made, Bb would prefer Mn over Mg, but WE need Mg-ATP. In high enough doses, Mg will displace Mn (and even Zn).
