Does this most likely represent an actual

colonization of the knees by Bb, or an

autoimmune arthritis which, although brought on

by the presence of Lyme in my body, I may never

be able to do anything about?

Well, anyway, that's one more ABX combo (bactrim/Rifampin)

that has utterly failed to curb the progression

of this horrible disease. Figure I should stop

pursuing this route and try herbs or

homeopathics now?

I really have no idea what you mean by knees go back....???

How long do you try each protocol you are put on?

Hi Adam,

I'm not sure what you mean by "going back," but I have been having knee problems lately that may be similar.

I may be standing in line at a grocery store or someplace, and all of a sudden, one knee collapses backwards with a horrible stabbing pain. The knees alternate at different times though.

My left knee on the outside has started to swell and both knees ache and feel swollen when bending. Knees, shins and feet ache at night in bed; morning foot paint is awful upon rising.

I'm pretty sure it is Bart, since i have a panoply of emotional swings and unreal thinking and spaciness.

Going for a Bart consult in the first week of September. It's looking like IV combo for me, since I've been having abx trouble in general.

One other thing, the knees have been bad for three weeks but seem to be easing up. Now my shoulders, elbows and hands are feeling arthritic and swollen.

As Dorothy Parker said, "Ah, what fresh hell is this?"

Best wishes for pain reduction and knee healing,

Oh, sorry--typo. Meant "go bad." [bonk]

Adam, you're young. I would go with it being lyme before anything else.

My knees "go bad" and then are fine, etc. It comes and goes.

Yeah--I don't doubt that's it's Lyme-induced;

I''m just wondering how likely it is that it's

the RA-type, treatment refractory condition that

the HLA-DR4 folks get. The fact

that it came on in both knees at exactly the

same time would seem to suggest that it's that,

rather than the result of the actual bugs

setting up shop in the joints.

Sorry--the orignial post was not particularly

well-worded.

Hi Adam,

My mother has very bad knees; very creaky, often painful. They used to swell up a lot, but not so much anymore.

I think she has lyme (she's being tested now) but she also has been diagnosed with lupus, so some of her problems appear to be autoimmune as well (she has a high sedimentation rate, positive ANA).

Recently, she started supplementing with Vitamin D3. She doesn't get any sunlight, and she has been on the extreme low end of the normal range for vitamin D for years.

Anyway, after about 3 weeks of supplementing 2000 i.u. per day, her knees are a lot less creaky, she gets up much more easily.

She still has knee pain, but that might be because vitamin D is supposed to have some antibiotic action, and is killing something in her (lyme, perhaps?) She has had very strong herx reactions to two short courses of antibiotics prescribed to her recently just before her Western Blot/ urine PCR tests.

But I'm pretty sure the vitamin D is doing something good for her knees. It is also supposed to be good for autoimmune disorders, as vitamin D is necessary to regulate the immune system. (Just reread this last night in the book "The Lyme Disease Solution")

You might want to have your doctor check your vitamin D levels, and if you are low, consider supplementing? Might be helpful whether it is a lyme issue or an autoimmune issue, as I belive my mom has both.

Good luck to you [Smile]

Hi again,

Meant to mention above that my mom's knees went bad at different times, not both at once. Even though she has autoimmune issues.

So both knees going bad at once may or may not be autimmune. My mother always seems to develop these things one joint at a time (originally hands, then one knee, then the other knee, now it is hitting one shoulder).

Also, she started taking some Sasparilla/Smilax herbal tincture around the same time she started taking the vitamin D3. According to Buhner's book, this has some anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic properties.

So this might be helping, too. But Sarsparilla also has antibacterial/ antispirochetal properties, so she can only tolerate a drop or two per day before she starts herxing, too, and her joint pains get worse.

So maybe one or the other would help you, too.

Good luck.
