My state of Oklahoma has reported 533 cases of lyme in dogs, but only 3 human cases since 2001. SERIOUSLY!! I know we don't even compare to the endemic northeast, but you can hardly say that it isn't here at all!! (unless you happen to be a doctor in OK) [bonk]

That's pretty much what they teach in most medical schools to most doctors, it seems.

It defies logic but that seems to be a common aspect in the denial of the existance of lyme disease.

I really don't think most doctors are aware of some of these facts. I don't think that the powers that be are drawing attention to these types of facts either.

The excuse for this particular fact would probably be something along the lines that dogs are much more likely to be exposed to ticks than humans because of the time they spend outdoors and the places they like to hang out.

Here in Oregon they deny that Lyme disease exists. If a person has it, they say you have to have traveled out of country or to the east coast. Most people say they traveled to Africa, and then the doctors are at least willing to test.

HOWEVER, lyme disease and erhlichiosis are reported and treated in horses, dogs, and cats.

1990--2006 of Lyme cases on the LDA website. LDA wants to make it difficult for anyone to continue to deny the impact of this disease nationwide.

I just noticed this on the LDA site, a new handy dandy tool for folks to use... (of course that is when I get done playing with it).

It is a printable map that shows the total number of reported cases of Lyme per year in each state... and the total number of cases over-all for each state. Thought it might be of help to those doing research, reports, support group meetings, etc.
