I'm on a low dose of hydrocortisone for adrenal fatigue. I take 5mg per day.

I've been reading this is bad for lyme. It was prescribed by my LLMD.

Is it okay to take this low a dose or should I ask him for a different medication?

Also, are there natural ways to treat moderate to severe adrenal fatigue?

Thanks-

This low dose is immuno-supportive not immuno-suppressive! It will help your adrenals recover and alot of LLMDs prescribe low dose hydrocortisone to treat the adrenal probs which so often accompany this disease. Trust your LLMD on this one!It is the only acceptable "steroid" for Lyme sufferers.

Natural adrenal support includes things like Siberian Ginseng, Licorice etc. There are several supplement combinations like Adrenal Stress End, Adrenal Essence etc which all help repair the adrenal system.

Hope this helps ease your concerns.

Yes, steroids are bad for any infection. But this low dose is supportive of the adrenals.

There is an excellent - and thorough - discussion of this in Singleton's book

I have used some of the supportive adrenal herbs for years, but it just is not enough for me. I have unsuccessfully asked my GP for cortef a couple of times. It is true, only a LLMD seems to understand the crushing fatigue. Cortef, low dose, seems to help many.

This book, by an ILADS member LLMD, has a lot of good information:

I'll also hunt down a few other things. I just got a book all about rhodiola. Very interesting.

Thank you both! It's such a relief to know this is ok to take.

keebler-I have Singleton's book but with my lymebrain keep forgetting to look at it. It's an excellent book. I bought it at your reommendation.

Also. I'm wondering if hypoglycemia is related to lyme? My blood glucose levels came back just below low.

I've been taking Mepron and Biaxin for the past 24 days. I had my blood tested after 2 weeks. I had taken Mepron about an hour before getting my blood drawn so I don't know if Mepron causes low blood sugar?

I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.

The havoc this disease wreaks on one's body is astounding.
