Tick attack troubles dogs

Photos Q. Help! My two dogs have ticks. My 5-year-old asked me what the black things on the dogs were.

I'm terrified that my children will get a disease . . . so the dogs must go. Who can I give them to?

And what should I tell my children's pediatrician?

-- Frantic Mom, Southwest Miami-Dade

A. First, take a deep breath and slow down. Next, understand that dogs do not pass tick diseases to humans. ************************

Don't get rid of your dogs because hungry and desperate ticks have been known to attach themselves to people as a last resort.

Ticks do carry diseases that affect humans. Lyme disease is an obvious example.

There are two dog tick species in Florida:

The brown dog tick, which is the more common, usually transmits diseases only between dogs.

The American dog tick is known to carry Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease, but because of our ecology, the latter is not a significant problem in South Florida.

A dog cannot pass these diseases to humans.

Your best course of action is to consult your vet, who should be able to identify the tick species, and then treat the home and yard accordingly.

The University of Florida IFAS Extension Services offers a good overview at edis.ifas.ufl.edu.

It's also available from your county extension office.

I agree. Who writes these kinds of things?

I shutter to think how many people get infected but aren't even aware of the signs to look for, due to all the misinformation out there.

I know, because I was one of them.

Yep....guess it's time for more writing. Thanks for sharing.
