IMPORTANT- Please share with Lyme patients and breast cancer patients

Thanks!

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol. 2003 Feb 10;106(2):175-8.

Cat-scratch disease presenting as a solitary tumour in the breast: report of three cases.

Markaki S, Sotiropoulou M, Papaspirou P, Lazaris D.
Histopathology Department, Alexandra General District Hospital, 7 Paparounas Str., 145 78 Ekali, Athens, Greece.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) may appear as a solitary mass in the breast and give the impression of a breast carcinoma.

In this case, further clinical and laboratory investigation is required to rule out malignancy.

We present three cases of CSD of the breast in women of 64, 31 and 61 years old.

Each presented with enlarged lymph-nodes in the breast, which were clinically mistaken for solitary tumours.

In the first two patients, the mammography was negative. The third patient had a mammogram which indicated a well-defined solid mass in the parenchyma without calcifications.

We discuss the clinical, histological and histochemical findings, analyze the differential diagnosis and review the literature.

Hopefully with digital mammograms I would imagine they are so much clearer and precise than back in 2003. I hope! [Eek!]

Our local lab is now digital.

This is amazing information. I wonder if that might apply to me as I had to have numerous masses taken out of both breasts but i never understood why I developed them over a couple years and without any understanding.. I had biobsies and they were not cancerous but there were three in each side and the were not small..
Hmmm I want to read about this some more and
LEARNING is POWER
THANKYOU

Thank you for the great info!!

I just wanted to add something regarding Mammograhms. I don't know anything about the other, but will read about it.

I found a large lump in my breast while taking a shower. I went to the Dr. that same day and he immediatly sceduled an emg. appt. with a surgeon and a Mammograhm. I also had a brown discharge from the breast.

Well this is my point that I think is so IMPORTANT!!!! This lump was a good size solid mass.

IT DID NOT SHOW UP IN THE MAMMOGRAHM!!!! The tech came back and said, "I see that this is a stat order for a mass, but there is nothing in your mammo.!" She, and the Radiologist were going to leave it at that!

I showed the Radiologist where it was, made her feel it and she was shocked! They then did and Ultra Sound where it did show!!!

She, the Dr. came in and told me to demand a Ultra Sound only from now on. Women with dense breast come up with MANY FALSE NEGATIVE MAMMOS!!

Just don't want to see this happen to anyone else.

I have very dense mass and they usually take my mammogram over and over because they just do not feel right i guess and it is annoying . Good idea to just do an ultra sound as well my mother and grandmother both had breast cancer. I also have a discharge from one side and had it tested and it howed up as a staph positive infection. Of course since i am loaded with infections. still when i feel better the discharge goes clear and when i am down and sicker it goes greeen.> I use it as a guage actually when taking abx. That might be me as the only one doing that so I have not told anyone that.. It sounds weird too.. But.. my docs are not that concerned about the discharge andthink that in my prior surgery there is a pocket that holds fluid.. I did not want to do a ductal and it is my falut for not digging deeper literally. ..

I wondered if there was a Lyme connection.

I found a lump this summer and had a mammogram followed by an ultrasound in October. There were many, many cysts and one solid mass which I had removed.

I was diagnosed with Lyme but was negative for bart but have always wondered if I didn't have it.

Do you think our bodies are trying to localize the infection by making a lump of infectious cells? ?

I have several cyst like masses that I believe are lyme related. I found these prior to lyme diagnosis, they are palpable, and not seen on mamogram. They are seen on ultrasound, and my breast surgeon wanted one removed. When we scheduled surgury, I fortunatley passed out while getting the IV...vaso vagel response to them breaking the needle in my vein...this stopped the procedure.

My surgeon tried to feel and find the lump, but the lump left! He immediately took me for another ultrasound...and culd not find anything. He has h=never seen anything like this. This was three years ago. It comes back and goes away. I believe it's lymph related, as I feel I am holding onto fluid...but who knows? Each year I now have to have multiple mamograms/ultrasounds only to be told I have lumps but no cancer? No nown cause or diagnosis of what the lumps are.

Must be lyme and co!

Thanks everyone for sharing your stories about the breast lumps.

Debaz,

Please go back to the Dr. and get a second opinion!!!

I know, I always over react to things; I guess it's from being a nurse for so long and seeing too much.

Such so you armed with knowlegde----you can tell (usually) the difference between a cyst and a solid mass on a ultra sound and usually on a mammo. But, THEY CANNOT TELL IF A SOLID MASS IS BENIGN OR MALIGNANT (CANCEROUS) OR NOT!!!!!

My breast discharge also seemed to change from green to a very dark brown/blood. I had SO samples taked on a slide that showed bacteria, etc...

When they had to remove the lump, he said that he had no choice but to remove the ducts too---too risky.

Although there was no active cancer, they were full of pre-cancerous polyps!!! A year ot two later and it would have been full blown cancer!!

With your family history, this is something I wouldn't mess around with!

Hello there.. The thing is I now have no masses.. They were removed years ago and it is after that surgery that the discharge started. Well though thanks for the advice and your right I should not mess around.. But I did have it tested two times now and they asked to do ductal tests and I didnt understand why nor wanted to go through that procedure... But I am up for an anual and I will follow up on this..
THANKS
D

Straight from the Wikipeidia - Something to think about overall.

Known to cause cancer

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach and duodenum. In some cases it may cause stomach cancer[1][2] and MALT lymphoma[3]. Animal models have demonstrated Koch's third and fourth postulates for the role of Helicobacter pylori in the causation of stomach cancer.[4]
[edit]

Suspected to cause cancer

Mycoplasma has been implicated in the formation of cancer.[5] Specific reports include:
Mycoplasma can ``induce malignant transformation of host mammalian cells'' by means of "aberrant expression of oncogenes and tumor repressors"[6].
A "Mycoplasma hyorhinis-encoded protein known as p37.....(could) infect humans and may facilitate tumor invasiveness" [7].
A ``significantly high existence of Mycoplasma sp. DNA" has been reported "in the tissues of patients with conventional (renal cell carcinoma)" as opposed to normal controls.[8]
"Mycoplasma infection can be detected in many tumor tissues; continuous infection of mycoplasma can lead to transformation of mammalian cells, up-regulating expression of oncogenes, and some biologic changes of tumor cells, suggesting association of Mycoplasma infection with tumorigenesis"[9]
A number of other bacteria have associations with cancer, although their possible role in carcinogenesis is unclear. Salmonella typhi is associated with gallbladder cancer, Streptococcus bovis is associated with colorectal cancer and Chlamydia pneumoniae with lung cancer.[1

this is really interesting, if not a bit scary

i wonder if that might be what happened with me. first prenatal visit the doctor found four lumps. i couldn't get a mamogram so they did an ultrasound. she said it didn't look like they were cancerous and they would keep an eye on them every month and send me for a mamogram after the baby. the lumps disappeared - checked me every month, checked me after the baby, i've gotten a breast exam every year since and nothing

always wondered wth happened. the doctor said he's had it happen to several women before - they find something, it disappears and 10 yrs later (most patients of his stick with him for long periods of time cause he's awesome) the woman still hasn't had any problems
