I started Rifampin 12 days ago, in addition to Doxy. I'm having lots of trouble tolerating it, due to nausea. I should be on 2 - 150mg caps/day, but can only take 1 or none at all.
Yesterday I woke to find 2 rashes on my neck. They were clusters of small red/purple dots, like sucker bites. I've had similar rashes many times before, but my pharmacy write-up on Rifampin says to call doctor if you see "small red spots on skin".
I asked a pharmacist what this could indicate, and he was clueless, and doesn't know why I would need to treat this as a serious side effect. I think this is petechiae or purpura, but don't know.
Has anyone had a similar experience with Rifampin? What did your LLMD say?
And for those who've had nausea and gagging on Rif, will it go away?? Doxy was rough on my stomach in the start, but not this bad...and all day.

Have never been on this drug. However, if the write up says this is exactly the rash you
should be cautious about and to call your doctor then that's exactly what you should do.
This could be a potentially serious side affect from the drug. Don't fool around and second guess it. CALL YOUR DOCTOR!

In case anyone else can use this info, the nurse at llmd's ofc took me off Rifampin.
I don't know if my rash was petechiae or purpura, but I have another write-up from my pharmacy: that if purpura becomes evident, Rifampin must be stopped.
Intracranial bleeding and fatalities have resulted from continuing or resuming rifampin after purpura has developed.
