Besides the obvious. Had some over New Years - some bubbly! Got a really bad stomach ache within 30-45 minutes. Tried a glass again Saturday night - same thing happened. So what actually happens to cause that? Why is it so bad for you? -p

My reaction happens the day after and sometimes for 2-3 days after. It just totally wipes me out and makes me feel even more toxic.
My liver is already mad most days, if I add even one margarita, it gets really p#@^ed. I rarely do, but I have one sister that is able to remind me just how much I love a good margarita.

Yeast and most of the good bacteria you had before lyme are dead now because of abx's so the booze isnt breaking down right. Oh by the way dont ever drink beer booze with flafyl or tindamax.

I get really sick. After one or two drinks, I will be in the bathroom throwing up!!
I haven't drank in over a year, even before I knew I had Lyme, simply because it has always made me feel aweful!
I read that is one of the symptoms of Lyme....

What about a "virgin" margarita? There are also a lot of fruity drinks at Trader Joe's - some are just the fruit without added sweeteners, too.

One of the top lyme experts could be no clearer: alcohol spells treatment failure. Lyme patients are to avoid alcohol and smoking.
Part of that is that lyme is so toxic, treatment also is more to be filtered out and the liver just can't keep up.
When the liver is already stressed or damaged, as happens with lyme, alcohol - even in tiny amounts - can be very toxic and the body goes into shock or overdrive - or becomes sluggish in a major way.
Alcohol and medicines also make for dangerous chemistry.
Brain cells also suffer. With lyme, brain cells already have taken a huge hit. Adding alcohol to that is a triple whammy.
And the lining of the stomach does not take kindly to alcohol, either. With lyme, the lining of the stomach is already compromised. Toxins can pass easily through. Alcohol passes much faster, too. And the irritation of the tender tissue can take a toll.

I wondered about this as I have ruled out some people I thought might have lyme disease when I later heard they like their beer or ?
I thought..well it must not be lyme then as I thought you got really sick if you drank.

In the book, you will also find suggestions for calming the body or enlivening the spirit (without alcohol). I find regular cat's claw tincture to be very calming and centering. And, after so much isolation, I can have a party spirit just being able to be around others.
Other than finding other ways to ameliorate the physiological desire to drink, there are also many fancy ways to fix fruity drinks, minus the alcohol and even added sugars.
Oh, there's another reason alcohol is so rough: sugar! It can send blood glucose readings to the moon and also make treating any infection much harder, even from that aspect.

Yeah, I've wondered, too. I know many threads over time have touched upon this topic. Even in some of the medical literature by lyme researchers, they note the very strange effects from even a sip of alcohol seems very common with lyme patients.
Still, sometimes, there are a few who may not be attuned to the message. Some may also not have reached that point just yet.
So, while severe alcohol intolerance with even a small amount can be a big clue, in it's absence, it's not a 100% fool-proof measure from a diagnostic point of view. From comments of others, though, this can change overnight.
While a very light drinker just once or twice a month, there was a time when it became poison for me. It's not like I had not been ill before that (of course all the doctors said I was fine) but I think there just comes the day when that system goes on red-alert. For some it happens sooner than for others.

I could not drink alcohol for a year. It gave me awful brain fog and inflammation. If you drink danactive and take probiotics it will help. but until the abx kill the infection you should not drink. it sets you back and is not worth it. you WILL be able to drink again. I have been on minocycline for 60 days, and can have about 2 glasses of wine no problem. Could not tolerate AT ALL before when I was on sick leave and when the lyme was really bad.
That was my question for mayo clinic and they probably thought I was nuts asking when I could drink again!!! HA!

I had 2 strains of lyme and numerous coinfections 1988to2001 untreated. I always drank beer love the taste and I like wine. Not big on whiskey,like some rum drinks,and lime green vodka. But i stick to beer or wine. Never got sick like you guys say? But with lyme a hangover takes a whole new demention hahaha.
But I dont drink very often anymore because of the meds. Now that Iam off them I have to consintrate on losing the weight I accumulated through the lyme disease journey I need exercize and low carb dieting.

Ya know, I've already changed our lifestyle so much with the foods we eat, what we drink, noises in the house, light sensitivity. To be noncompliant for celebration - now I'm just no "fun" anymore. Everyday life is a chore. I feel so badly for my husband who is well and wants to "live it up" once in a while. This illness is hard on marriage as it is. -p

My grandmother has been a heavy drinker for the entire time she's had Lyme (a decade), and is now suffering from a severe dementia. Admittedly, she was only treated for 3 weeks after her second exposure to Bb, but I'd still say that alcohol and TBI's don't mix.

Wow, i feel drunk all the time without alcohol, i think i would puke if i even had a sip of alcohol. I haven't drank since i got Lyme and probably wont for a while.
