The big day has finally arrived and I have to admit I'm a little nervous. However, I'm also feeling relieved because it means I will be able to finally begin treatment.
The hospital has me on stand-by and said the surgery will probably be later this afternoon. Thanks to everyone who has responded to all my questions concerning the ports and the procedure!!

Hi everyone!
The port procedure went very smoothly and I was only in surgery for about an hour. The surgeon said it is placed a little further under the skin than most due to my extra body weight. (I asked him if he was calling me fat.)
I was pretty exhausted when I got home last night and went straight to bed and I'm a little sore this morning. Thanks to everyone for the support....it means so much to me!

Ah... don't worry about what the surgeon says, being skinny is waaaay over rated! I feel crappy when Lyme gets me that way..been feeling WAY better anxiety wise since I've put some weight on =)
Rest today, drink your fluids to get the sedation meds out of your body.

Ocean- You may think being skinny is over rated but I wouldn't mind trying it for a day or two! Thanks for the words of encouragement.
TDTID- I'm definitely taking it easy today....have pretty much been napping most of the afternoon. My first infusion will be on Saturday....any advice?
Betty- The nurses in the recovery area thought that was funny also. They said the surgeon looked puzzled and seemed speechless and that was a first for him!! I know exactly what you mean about not blowing away on a windy day....I've added about 50 pounds of "Lyme blubber" since becoming sick. (I'm often afraid others will see me and wonder why a walrus is using a walker )

Did they leave the needle accessed or will it need to be reaccessed again on Saturday?
No real advice, but there are prescription numbing type creams that help for accessing the port if it will make it a little easier.

They did not leave the needle accessed. I asked my surgeon about the numbing cream and as it turns out I can't use it because I'm allergic to lidocaine, which is one of the main ingredients. They always have to use marcaine instead of lidocaine on me. Guess I will just have to grin and bear it.

Your physician could order a marcaine based numbing cream. Just ask for it. A pharmacy can specially compound a numbing cream for you.
