According to the World Health Organization's Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response site; as of April 27, there are:
* 64 laboratory confirmed cases in U.S. -- 0 deaths (reported by CDC as of April 29) * 26 confirmed cases in Mexico -- 7 deaths * 6 confirmed cases in Canada -- 0 deaths * 1 confirmed case in Spain -- 0 deaths
Additionally, nearly all suspected new cases have been reported as mild.

This thing isnt natural its been created theres no way that it shows up all over the world at the same time. Then it has the DNA of the panendemic 1918 flu Human, and swine dna flu, and bird flu dna too! and top it off its not even flu season now !! flus come out of the east. Not naturaly occurring.
I read years ago that the dod or army went up where the original out break strain was and dug up the bodies to get the original strain now this is happening.

The bodies, says Britain's leading flu expert, could help explain why 40 million people died in the 1918 outbreak of "Spanish flu". Research on them could help to combat future global epidemics.
John Oxford, the Government's flu adviser, is convinced a highly contagious and deadly strain of the influenza A virus will strike within a decade. The last time a type A strain struck Britain, two years ago, 20,000, mainly elderly, people died, bringing the National Health Service to its knees. A type B flu hit last year with less effect.
Professor Oxford, of Queen Mary's School of Medicine in London, predicts another type A flu outbreak this year with a really nasty strain hitting the planet within 10 years. "We are anticipating a pandemic in the next decade," he said yesterday. That makes the race to discover the cause of the 1918 pandemic all the more urgent.
After two years' detective work, trawling through undertakers' records, his team has tracked down 10 young people, who died of Spanish flu, buried across London in lead-lined coffins. The lead will have kept the corpses preserved, he believes, allowing scientists to examine the corpses and the genetic code that makes up Spanish flu.
The removal of the bodies will have to be done with extreme caution. Professor Oxford admits there is an outside chance of unleashing Spanish flu again."It has to be done very, very carefully," he said.
A previous expedition, two years ago, to dig up the bodies of seven coal-miners on Spitzbergen, a Norwegian island above the Arctic Circle, proved only a partial success because the corpses were "cold but not deep-frozen".
Professor Oxford said: "We got some gene signals coming out from [the Norwegian corpses] but we suddenly realised we didn't have to go to the north pole - we could get a lead-entombed one in London."
Professor Oxford must now trace the relatives of those buried in London to get permission to dig up the corpses. He will also need authorisation from the Home Office and cemetery owners. www.independent

The journalists have been told by top officials of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) about the grave dangers posed by the new and deadly swine flu strain, known as A-H1N1. This flu, never before seen by scientists, has already killed up to 68 people in Mexico and has forced the cancellation of public events, including sports matches and concerts, and the closure of schools, libraries, and museums. Eight cases have been reported in Texas and California. Doctors are examining several students at a Queens high school in New York who displayed symptoms similar to those experienced by swine flu patients in Mexico.
Our Mexico City source said a top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, concluded that H1N1 possesses certain transmission "vectors" that suggest that the new flu strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon. The UN expert believes that Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and the current A-H1N1 swine flu virus are biological warfare agents.
Past swine flu outbreaks have been spread from pigs to humans, who then passed the flu on to other humans. However, with A-H1N1, there have been no reported infections of pigs. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), A-H1N1 has gene segments from North American swine, bird and human flu strains and a segment from Eurasian swine flu. Costa Rica, Brazil, and Peru have issued alerts to check all incoming passengers from Mexico at border crossings, airports, and seaports for symptoms of the swine flu.
WHO is convening an emergency session of its top medical experts in Geneva and is set to declare H1N1 a "public health event of international concern." It is reported that WHO will recommend travel restrictions to and from areas where the flu has been reported, including Mexico City and the states of Mexico, Hidalgo, San Luis Potos and Oaxaca.
Our Jakarta source said WHO officials are afraid that the presence of gene segments from dreaded H5N1 bird flu in the A-H1N1 swine flu strain could mean that the new swine flu strain was engineered to "jump species."
WMR has been informed that the CDC and U.S. Army dug up the body of an Inuit woman who died in 1918 in Brevig Mission, Alaska from an outbreak of Spanish flu. The influenza pandemic that year killed up to 100 million people worldwide in an 18-month period. Brevig Mission saw 72 of its 80 residents die within five days, the worst case recorded anywhere in the world. WMR has been told the genetic material recovered by the U.S. government from the corpse of the Inuit woman provided the basis for the development of the H5N1, or bird (avian), flu strain at the U.S. Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the point of origin for the Ames strain of anthrax used in the 2001 bio-war attacks against the U.S. Congress and the media.
The fear in Asia is that if the A-H1N1 pandemic spreads to the United States, travel to and from the country will be all but shut down.

If "WE" get it do you know how devastating that could be??
I know I'd be dead.Does anyone know how fast this can kill a person? Is it days or weeks??
It's messed up that the symptoms are so intertwined with Lyme.
Let's pray that this virus stops....

Regardless of the "Hype" it is obviously a health concern to all.
And yes it HAS caused a death to a 23 month old child.
You are right that Lyme and Co's get no recognition when it should have many years ago, but this is no "Hype" it is a virus that is infecting hundreds(probably thousands) of people worldwide.

A new case just two towns over from me, a teacher of all things. He just returned from a visit to Mexico. Imagine how many people a TEACHER could have infected?
All the town's schools are shut down. People in our local Walmart were wearing masks today I hear.
This just went from being very far away and seemingly blown out of proportion to being right next door!!!

flu.
some pharmacies and all health food stores have it.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine - has been shown to prevent or lessen the severity of influenza. Suggested
1200mg twice a day adults; 600 mg twice a day in kids over 12. You can try to open capsules and
put it in yogart for kids that will not take it. For 40 pounds and up, 33-600 mg twice a day, for
less than 40 pounds, half that. Oscillococinum, a homeopathic remedy, is also
good.

the media reported about how we were premature and all, made us sound like hysterical fools, but they conveniently left out the increasing number of cases here....

There still have been no U.S. deaths and the cases in the U.S. appear to be relatively mild. It appears so far that may be this flu will not be as worrisome as some previously thought.
Time will tell.

I'm not as scared as I was before about this. I think, like a few others here have said, it's just over-hyped... THAT, and I've realized... whatever happens is going to happen... nothing I can stop. AND my husband's a teacher... so there's a high probability that he could catch it if some kid brings it into the school and then he'd bring it home to me. So I could freak out about this daily, but the more I do, the less it's going to help... plus freaking out and worrying will just suppress my immune system more so I am trying to be positive about this. haha.
This sounds like any other flu, the only difference is that the CDC and the media are keeping tabs on every single state and number of people getting the virus. It would be the exact same thing if we were to keep track of the regular flu every year - it spreads just as fast and we'd all freak out as well if the media and or CDC called it something other than just the 'flu'.
Also, the ONE death in the United States shouldn't even be reported as a United States death. It happened on US soil, but it was a Mexican citizen baby that was brought from Mexico a couple days before it died to receive treatment in a US hospital. So it really should be counted as a Mexico death. So technically, there have been no deaths in the United States from this flu. It's beyond me why they are counting the Mexican citizen baby as a United States death.... probably to hype this up even more that someone died from this.

Anyone have a comparison to number of cases and deaths from the regular yearly flues that go around?
I had the "ordinary" flu this year, and so did half the people I know. I don't remember anyone getting particularly concerned about me and my neighbors spreading our germs around.
No doubt more US deaths from that flu, so far, than from the "2009 Influenza A."
Sounds like the cases in Mexico are probably mixed with a bacterial infection that gets treated with antibiotics here in the US, if anyone goes in to their doc with bad respiratory symptoms, regardless if the problem started with the flu.
There's something political and economic going on here that we are not privy to. Sounds to me like a hype most likely generated by the makers of Tamiflu and Relenza.
Nice to have a good world-wide enemy to rally around, when the economy gets scary.

i wasn't picking on you specifically ... i went back to 6-8 posts with the former name.
in the WEE am hours, i was watching cspan with the same ENERGY/COMMERCE sub-committee who has our lyme bill there.
they had cdc there discussing N1HI or vice versa, iowa's house rep bruce braley, sp, made wonderful comments about getting the name to CORRECT name they came up with this virus.
he cornered CDC director over infectious diseases about this twice. she informed him it was a LOW PRIORITY; other things need to be done first.
he explained about iowa's pork farmers and how it was hurting their economy. again, he tried to pinpoint her and she was starch. something like i'll see what i can do.
but after his turn was over she was writing herself a note and i think she was going to show person to side of her when cameras left her!
but he did a great job on his wordage and insistence to call it what it is; not what they named it. [Smile]

In 4 days the number of cases doubled and the number of states where it is being reported went up by 4 X.
May 2nd, 2009.
160 people in 21 states.
No additional deaths reported in the USA.

some more info on the one tx "death" of the toddler from mexico. he was actually in major houston galleria mall day before he showed symptoms. There has been lot of controvery talk here in tx about if this was something the toddler got in tx or in mexico taking the incubation period into account. http://www.ktar.com/?nid=509&sid=1144642
but, will say for houston area. 3 houston schools were closed this week with more closures expected next week. however, trying to find info on actual confirmed cases for houston and surrounding counties is hard. teen case from fort bend is not related to any of school closures this week.
but, gotta say a virus that is a mix of 4 flu strains sure does not sound like something one would find to occur in nature to me? biowarfare is the new thing. pretty sure US is not the only ones playing with germs.
interesting that previous outbreak of swine flu started in fort dix back in 1976. makes me think anyway?

By the way, the masks don't stop transmission.
Unless it keeps you from touching your hands to mouth or nose.
It is a contact transmitted disease.
It isn't air borne..................yet.
Let's just hope it doesn't happen.
None is Louisiana yet.
Our problem with this virus will probably come during Hurricane Season.
Can you imagine being in an Emergency Shelter with hundreds of people?
I'd stay home and take my chances.

We got a message from our school district today that one of our students has a confirmed case of H1N1 flu. The student was in the midwest on spring break and flew home via Houston. Apparently the student became sick that same evening and was never back in school after the break.

I still say it is a lot of Hype. A lot is being driven by the companies who stand to benefit from a vaccine. I don't even pay attention to this stuff. Much. much bigger risks to our health you never hear in the news. What a joke.

I received a note home from DD's school. A child, who returned to school after a vacation in Mexico, has come down with flu symptoms.
The regular flu was confirmed in the family, but the results weren't back yet for the H1N1 strain.
They'll keep us posted.

I heard from someone who was at a meeting last night and the health department was there tooting their own horns, as usual....
And they were already promoting the idea that people should get two vaccines next year.
UGGGGGGGG!!!!
Also, today shows another death in Texas which I am sorry to see.
Yesterday I also figured out in approximately 5 days...
The number of cases went up 5 fold... and the number of states went up 5 fold.
That averages out to doubling the number of confirmed cases every day.
