Hi folks. I've been in IV Rocephin, twice a day now, for my first week. The push is done Mon. - Thurs.,
with Fri., Sat., and Sunday, off. Things went Ok for the first series. This past Saturday, I find
that I have a serious rash on my shoulders, lower back, chest, and thighs.
What can I use on this to get some itching relief, and help heal it? (I've already left a message with my Lyme nurse.)
I would assume any type of steroid based creams or ointments are a no-no.
Any suggestions? This is really troublesome.
I've stopped the Rocephin I.V.'s until I get an answer.

I don't know if it would be safe for you to take Benadryl or not, but my LLMD suggested I use it for the itchy Bartonella rashes on my arms.

Aveno Oatmeal bathes work well for some rashes. And as Leelee suggested an antihistamine like Benadryl or Zyrtec should help with the itching. Claritan is not as effective when it comes to rashes. Cool compresses might help too.

I'm sorry, Leelee I should have been more specific. I'm already taking oral Benadryl. I'm still itching.
I need something topically, some type of lotion, cream, or ointment.

i had a very itchy rash which was worse than poison ivy. my dr. said yeast was very possible.
he gave me an rx (lotrimin) for cream to be applied for 2 weeks 2x a day. Nizoral is another topical fungal cream for yeast rashes. the cream worked for me.
you should definitely contact your doctor and rule out an allergy.

Try a lemon rubbed on a spot or 2. If it stops it
great. If it don't no harm done. It works on my
neck.

Maybe you need something to trick your skin into feeling a different sensation. A counter-irritant.
Try Gold Bond Medicated Cream. Your skin will feel the coolness from the menthol and will be fooled.
I have horrible itchy crawly skin. Sometimes, this is my only relief.

Both my Lyme nurse and Dermatologist (he saw me yesterday) now tell me I'm allergic to Rochepin.
I'll have to try another type of IV drug. This rash is brutal, and topical ointments aren't helping.
What is typically used for I.V. if the patient can't handle Rocephin?

Your doctor will probably rx IV Vanco. IV zithromax and IV doxy are also commonly used by other doctors. Your doc is also an ID doc and he goes about things a little differently.
IV Tigacycline is also a new one being used, it has had gret efficiency in vitro....`some say it is hard to tolerate.

Oh forgot to say, IV vanco needs a PICC line as it is caustic. So unless he orders a PICC for you, you won't be getting that.
