One of my 5 year old twins with lyme has this red bump just under his jawline that started as a gnat bite.
He scratched it a lot and it was a big welt and then never went away. It has been like this for over 3 months now. The redness and size have diminished a little but it is still very noticeable. It is raised and now more purple than bright red. It feels very hard. He says it is a little sore.
The ped looked at it a couple of months ago and thought it would go away on its own but would probably take a long time. Now I'm concerned that perhaps it is MRSA. My son is on rifampin and biaxin so perhaps we are keeping it at bay but I plan to take him to a dermatologist or (eek..an infectious disease doctor?) to get him evaluated. I'm afraid it may need to be removed.
Does this sound like it could be MRSA to you? I don't know much about it and thought if it were MRSA that it might be more of an open wound.

Hate to say it, but most of us are carrying MRSA in our noses.
If we were to be swabbed there, MRSA probably would show up.
I would take my child back to the doc and let them culture it.
I take biaxin and yet know that does not protect me.
I work in a place where everyone who gets cultured is
Positive for MRSA. Gulp!

It doesn't sound like MRSA to me.
I'm told that can spread across your body within 24-48 hours and be very serious.
A ER doc once thougth my daughter had MRSA from what started out as a pimple. I meant this baby became an entity all to itself.
He wanted to cut it out right there and was very worried. it was on her face so he suggested a plastic surgeon as another option.
The surgeon put her on antibiotics but said no cutting. He sent her back to the ER doc to get an antibiotic shot first then pills.
Two very different opinions.
I went with the surgeon. Avoided a huge scar and it was not MRSA.
I think the meds you were on would not have kept it at bay if it were MRSA. They would have either eventually cured it, or it would have spread already and become ugly.
It could be scar tissue. If they can get a biopsy, great. But there was no liquid to drain from my daughters lesion, although the surgeon did try. He did get some cells though. But the results take a few days. I took a chance not cutting like the ER doc said to do.
Perhaps an antibiotic ointment after needle biopsy to confirm.

Meds frequently used to treat MRSA include but aren't limited
Rifampin may be used in combination with minocycline.
Minocycline alone can cause/contribute to resistance.
My co-worker has recently had two episodes of MRSA.
One on his arm. The other up his nose.
Bactriban was used for both of his.

Thank you all for your replies. My son saw Dr. J today and he agreed it didn't look like MRSA. He said if it were, it would get bad fast like you said.
We will need to see a ped dermatologist to see if it needs to be removed, but thankfully it's not an urgent matter.
