Can Plaquenil be used successfully to treat Babesia instead of Mepron or Lariam? I was on Mepron and became extremely depressed. My doctor replaced it with Lariam, but after reading the side effects, (Psychosis and in some cases suicide), I am scared to even try it.
Thank you

My llmd said that plaquenil will not eradicate babesia, sorry.

I believe it will suppress it, since it is an antimalarial drug.

It should be used in combination with other things I should add -- mepron and zith are a good treatment for babs.

I just read that someone had great success on Plaquenil and Biaxin. I think they took 500 mg twice a day and Plaquenil twice a day. Their doctor thought the Plaquenil helped eradicate the biofilm that protects the cells from antibiotics---i definitely want to study more and see if there is any truth to it.

Also just heard a man took malerone for 6-7 weeks for babesia with success. i have never heard of malerone....more to study

I have heard that Plaq and Biaxin can treat Babesia in milder cases.

I have not read research to that effect, so can't back up what I heard.

Thanks for the Biaxin/Plaquenil info. I will check into it.

The Biaxin/Plaquenil success may have been treating Lyme though.

There are some people that have gotten rid of babs with Bactrim and Biaxin though. Maybe Plaquenil could be added to that too (check interactions).

Add some anti-malarial herbs like cryptolepsis and/or artemisinin or artemisia (with doctor's supervision and knowledge), and you might be on your way.....

The first llmd to have come up with the plaquenil

for lyme was Dr. D. in MA. He discovered that

plaquenil was a "cyst buster" for lyme and that

when taken with biaxin had very good results. I

was treated by a llmd that was taught by Dr. D.

and he is the one who told me this. In fact,

when we refer people to Dr. D., this info is

posted along side of his contact info. And yes,

it has worked very well for babesia on some.

Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents. [Smile]

I have been on plaquenil for 2 yrs. It is supposed to be a cyst buster and have some positive effect on babesia however, my numbers never came down while on it.

In Mar of this year, I started Mepron/Zithromax and still taking plaquenil. My doctor started me slowly on the Mepron to be sure I would tolerate it well.

June 15 bloodwork showed negative babesia. We are continuing to treat but I have recently dropped the plaquenil. Another bloodtest will be run in 5 weeks.

My babesia symptoms went away very quickly on the Mepron.

my babs protocol was:

10 days biaxin and plaq

10 days clindamycin and quinine

then repeat

Yep sounds familiar Lpkayak. [Smile] 40 days can't eradicate Babesia based on comments here - impossible. [Frown]

Hi, Luvs2ride--what were your babesia symptoms

that went away? How long were you on mepron be-

fore you started feeling better? I am so, so

happy to hear that--Do you feel much better now?

Thank you

I don't think Lariam is any worse than any otehr Babesia treatment, I think it's treating the infection that sends people crazy and if UNWARNED (because unaware that they are infected for eg), they could really think they are going right round the twist.

Lariam is keeping my babesia in check, it only made me crazy when I first started it, but no worse than Mepron. Now it doesn't cause me any problems.

Hello Nelly,
Are you taking the Lariam with an antibiotic or just by itself? And if so, how long have you been on it? Would you say it is more effective than Mepron?
Thanks

I was told that about 50% do well on mepron/zith and another 50% do better on malarone.

Dr. H in his LIA June talk likes cryptolepsis and malarone together.

However, some people do better on mepron/zith as seens on this board.
