Has anyone taken Melatonin to help sleep at night?

I tried it several times but had no success. I hear some people really like it, though.

My daughter takes it and seems to help some. It is not a drug so don't see any harm if it does some good.

I will try tonight for the first time. I also take Xanax for anxiety and didn't think it would be good to take them together.

Thank you

My 10 yr old son takes the liquid kind. I heard the time release capsules work best. I also heard you should take it when you are in bed and lights are out already.

He started with 1 ml and then worked up to 5 ml because it seems to lose it's effectiveness and you have to increase. Though it can cause insomnia if you get at too high of a dose.

I guess you just have to play around with it and see what works for you.

He takes a herb mix of valerian root, passion flower, chamomile & hops too.

These are some good sleeping herbs. He also takes 2 ml of the liquid melatonin with it.

This combo is working for now. The melatonin alone stopped working for him.

We have been at this insomnia with him since March so I have done my homework. LOL

Good luck!

I have taken OTC and prescription sleep aids for years. I have Graves Disease as well and suffer horribly from insomnia. My endocrinologist suggested Melatonin, and I can say it has helped. I wake up a bit earlier, but on the plus I am not nearly as groggy as when I take the drugs. And I do get to sleep. It doesn't "knock me out" like other pills. So I take it earlier and read in bed until I can't anymore. I am getting restful sleep. Give it a try, it can't hurt.

After several years of off and on insomnia, (and nothing to fight it), i started taking Melatonin, first 1 mg, then more. At first it worked pretty well.

Then the more i took, the more insomnia i had; on 3 mg, 4 mg, 5 mg, worse increasing insomnia.

Finally i stopped taking the melatonin--- and have had normal, sound sleep patterns ever since!

What happened??

When I first saw my llmd I was taking melatonin and amitriptyline for sleep

She wanted me off both of them for some reason I can't remember.

Now I take 3 prescription sleep meds and one natural.

Hi,

I tried lots of oral melatonin in small and large doses a couple years ago and it did nothing for me.

When I first saw my LLMD in 2009, he advised me to use only sublingual melatonin.

I started with 1 mg and worked my way up to 15 mg which is what I take now.

He told me not to exceed 17.5 mg.

The sublingual melatonin works great for me.

I order the Source Naturals brand from the Vitamin Shoppe in the 5 mg tabs and put 3 tabs under my tongue at night after I start yawning...around 10-11pm.

Usually within 20 minutes I need to go directly to bed.

Some people are very sensitive to low doses and take it while in bed since it can cause dizziness.

The other thing that has helped me greatly with sleep are bioidentical hormones: progesterone at bedtime, estrogen/testosterone drops on wrist in a.m., and DHEA in the morning and noon.

I have recently weaned myself off of gabapentin at bedtime that a neurologist had given me.
