Hi All,

I have a 25 yr old friend who in just entering her 2nd trimester. She was on minocycline and the LLMP (Lyme Literate Medical Professional) switched her to penicillan every 6 hrs.

Any thoughts on this?

She is afraid to start the abx, just doesn't want to hur the baby etc.

Really appreciate input!

Thanks,
Curley

penicillan is safe in pregnancy. she should take it if she has lyme to help prevent transmission! i am going to try to conceive in the fall and i plan on taking amoxicillan, which is what my llmd recommends.

Sometimes two antibiotics are used together too, like Zithromax with Omnicef is what they had me on. I'm not sure if that would be used on everyone though. I also had bartonella and active mycoplasma.

Minocycline is not safe in pregnancy, as far as I know. Was she on it during her whole first trimester? I'm surprised a doctor prescribed that.

Here is something I pulled off the net (sorry, it was in all caps) (Minocin is the name brand of minocycline):

MINOCIN, LIKE OTHER TETRACYCLINE-CLASS ANTIBIOTICS, CAN CAUSE FETAL HARM WHEN ADMINISTERED TO A PREGNANT WOMAN. IF ANY TETRACYCLINE IS USED DURING PREGNANCY OR IF THE PATIENT BECOMES PREGNANT WHILE TAKING THESE DRUGS, THE PATIENT SHOULD BE APPRISED OF THE POTENTIAL HAZARD TO THE FETUS.

I am not sure how often Penicillin is used, but Amoxicillin has been used in many pregnancies and is very safe. She needs to start the drug ASAP, in my opinion, to protect the baby.

Hi Curley911,

Antibiotics that I believe are effective and safe during pregnancy are amoxicillin, omnicef, zithromax, ceftin and bicilin injections.

Depending on how symptomatic the patient is, I believe there a coupld of IV anibiotics that can be given during pregnancy as well, but I'm not sure which ones they are.

I am not absolutely certain of my advice so please have her check with her doctor.

Also, I think I've heard that penicilin is not particularly effective for lyme and that's why amoxicilin is more often used.

A person on lymenet, CaliforniaLyme, took Amoxicillin at a dose of, i think , 4500 mg per day,---please check that---- for 3 years through pregnancy and nursing.
You can check that by searching on CaliforniaLyme.

Do you all know if there is a chance of tooth staining in the infant by taking abx during pregnancy and BF?

Obviously it is sooooo important, but I was on Zithromax during BFing after finding out I was + and there wasn't a big chance with it.
Don't know about amox and penicillin.

Hey Curley,

I was prescribed Cefdinir(Omnicef) 2 capsules by mouth every day. 300 mg capsule.

Also, Zithromax 1 tablet every day. 500 mg tablet.

This was suggested by a Lyme Ped and prescribed by my OB/Gyn.

The Lyme Ped spoke to the OB on the phone. I don't know if he truly agreed, but he prescribed it.

Needless to say, I miscarried, but not due to the meds.

Well wishes to your friend
