Curious if anyone has had this done before......I'm leaving in about an hour to have this done by my neurologist. She's doing it in a special procedure room right there in her office, so I guess it's not that bad.........

Somehow they extract nerve fibers (I think from your lower leg), and then do biopsies on the nerve fibers. EEWWWWWWWWWWWWW................my teeth feel like they've been chewing on a sour lemon!!!!!!

She told me they send it off somewhere and it takes about 3-4 weeks to get the results back.

As you can tell, I'm not thrilled to go do it! We're going to talk more about my LP results today, although for the most part everything looked pretty good to her. Yea!!!!!

No MS, no cancer, which were the main 2 things she was looking to rule out ------ she later told me! I can't remember the rest of what she tested for; I'll have to post that later.

Anyway, if anyone has had one of these nerve biopsies done, any kind of feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks & take care,

I have had the skin biopsies done four times over the past few years. The procedure is very quick, easy and painless. It heals up in a few weeks and can be repeated if necessary.

Basically they take a small sample of your skin (usually from the lower and upper parts of your leg) and it is sent to a lab where they measure the nerve fiber density.

The point of the procedure is to indentify if you have small fiber neuropathy.

The procedure is very different from a nerve biopsy where they actually remove part of your nerve.

So don't worry about it! Before you know the whole thing is over.
