My Dr is out of town, but the on call Dr is suggesting tindamax or flagyl.

I have not heard of tindamax treating c diff.

Thoughts? Experiences, please.

you need to tx it -do what doc says and next time on abx be sure to take sbc

what is sbc?

Saccharomyces Boulardii Capsules (helps prevent c. diff).

A google of Tindamax appears that it can be used for c. diff, but you may need to look into further. My sister was treated with Flagyl.

Here is a c. diff support group. Never tried it, but thought it may help:

Hope you feel better.

Forgot to mention that Saccharomyces Boulardii needs to be taken at a different time than antibiotics or probiotics.

Ive taken the Metagenics brand in the past and need to restart again. Maybe others can share the brand they use. Most important at this point in my non-professional opinion is to take the medication your doc is prescribing for c. diff.

My husband had C. diff when on abx for a sinus infection. He took Flagyl for the C. diff and was fine afterwards.

When I had it, I had to go to the hospital for IV - whatever they did there stopped it.

what were the symptoms of cdiff?

Blinkie

So sorry you have this! My SIL had it and she took Flagyl. At first her (mainstream) Dr. had her take Culturelle. She now takes Florastar (kind of expensive) but it contains the probiotics necessary to avoid C Diff. She doen't have Lyme and was not on ABX long term.

I take Culturelle (which contains one of the probiotics - but only one) and then also take Saccharomyces Boulardii, too. I also take NSI probiotics.

Morningstar - why should we take the Saccharomyces Boulardii away from other probioitcs? I've been taking them all at the same time and I hope it's at least been doing something.

Ouch, so sorry you are dealing with this! C. Diff has been a problem for me, too, so you have my sympathy.

Yes, yes to the S. Boulardii! Start taking it now - just take it spaced apart from your Flagyl or Tindamax.

Same goes for your other probiotics (whichever brand you choose).

Keep an eye on your symptoms after your round of Flagyl.

Sometimes it's hard to get rid of all of the C. Diff spores, so it can take a few rounds of treatment.

As for taking S. Boulardii away from other probiotics - I didn't know that either, and would love to hear more about that. Thanks for the heads up, Morningstar.

Mojo~

I may have mispoke about not taking SB with probiotics -- maybe someone else can clarify.

Went back and looked at previous threads and it appears that SB cannot be taken around the time antifungal/anti-yeast products (nystatin, diflucan, garlic, anything that kills yeast or candida)because it will destroy the SB too.

Can someone clarify whether SB can be taken with probiotics? Sorry for the confusion Mojo.

Thanks everyone. I've been taking the sbc aps. My Dr told me to. I think it has stopped it from getingworse but it is not clearing it up yet (been on them for 2 weeks).

I got the script for tindamax and started it this morning.

Fun, fun. I didn't even eat dinner last night until 9pm so I could go to a class at 6 and not have to run the the potty.

I swear, if it's not one thing because of lyme, it's another.

I had C Diff. My doc put me on Vancomycin and it was gone in a week. I still had to take it for a month though because they wanted to see 3 clean tests before they took me off the meds just to make sure it was gone.

I was also not symptomatic though so that is probably why it cleared so fast for me. I had no symptoms of it at all and the only way we knew I had it is because I had a GI panel done.

Anyhow my doc also had me take 3 capsules of Saccharomyces Boulardii daily plus my regular probiotic. She still has me taking those daily for preventative measures so that it doesn't come back.

Sorry you have to deal with this though. It is a pain to deal with. Hope it clears up soon!

Take Care,
Pam :-)

Vancomycin is usually the better drug. Flagyl can be used though. You can take S.boulardii with antibiotics and probiotics too the timing does not matter. It DOES matter if you take it with Diflucan or Nystatin, it will just kill it!!

Once you get c.diff, you really have to be careful with ANY antibiotic EVER again. It usually brings a halt to your Lyme treatment and you cannot use the antibiotics for a long time, if ever again.

Any of you on antibiotics should be on s.boulardii(Florastor) to prevent c.diff!!

It has a VERY high relapse rate so make sure you stay on the FLagyl or Vancomycin long enough! If you get symptoms when you stop those, get yourself back on them and to a good GI doctor.

Here's an article On c.diff.

Is Forastor considered the best brand of Saccharomyces Boulardii?

Have taken Metagenics Saccharomyces Boulardii in the past, but am willing to make the switch to protect from c.diff.

I need to get started on it again right away and want to get the one of best quality to keep safe.

Yes, it is because it is the only one to my knowledge that has actually been tested for potency. I have spoken to many of the nations top GI docs about this and have gotten the same advice, that is it supposed to be #1. That, and VSL #3.

Thanks WC. I will order some.

What is VSL?

I thought I read that there are two pro-biotics that help prevent/heal C diff. the one in Cuturelle (can't remember the strain)and then the SBL. I thought Florastor had both but I see that's not true.

I've been taking culturelle and Allergy Research Group SB but will make the change to Florastor pronto!

My question is we should still take other probiotics, right? I use the NSI brand in three different strengths.

Yes, make the change to Florastor. When I used to order the allergy research one, it required refrigeration and it would arrive warm=bad. Get Florastor, it can be kept room temp and has been proven to be effective and potent.

VSL # 3 is a probiotic. Yes, other probiotics are fine, just mix up the brands to get more good flora. Who knows how potent or how junky store brands actually are..its a lottery. Florastor is different from probiotics, its a beneficial yeast, not a bacteria species. Just don't take anti-fungal drugs with it. Everyone on antibiotics should be on Florastor to prevent c.diff. Most LLMD's who know what they are doing recommend that their patients take it regularly for that reason.

Just research this stuff folks, do some googling, it's all right there for you to learn and get the information to get yourself to better health. [Smile]
