I had a naturopath do food allergy testing for me, mostly so I could stop listening to everyone around me who kept saying, "Maybe you're sick because of allergies!" (This was pre-Lyme dx.)

I didn't have any GI symptoms, so I was pretty sure that allergies were not the problem. But I figured I'd check.

Got the results back and I reacted to *nothing*--which is kind of odd because I have a potentially life-threatening cashew allergy.

The ND was really surprised by the results, because she says that everyone comes back allergic to something.

Other doctors I've talked to have said that most food allergy testing is pretty unreliable.

It was pretty much a waste of money for me, except that I can say, "No, it's not gluten that's making me sick. And it's not corn or soy..."

Around the same time, my husband was also tested for food allergies (same doc). The results said he was allergic to most nuts, soy, and wheat. So he tried an elimination diet to test the results.

There was absolutely no difference between the weeks where he was abstaining and the weeks where he ate the "allergic" foods.

So I don't know...I'd take food allergy testing with a grain of salt. I think I'd be more likely to trust elimination challenges than outright testing.

Just my opinion,
AnnaL
