I can't believe this is not written on the stickers on the prescription bottles. I also couldn't easily find anything about it on the written

information that comes with the prescrption (although it's very wordy and I didn't read it all).

How do magnesium and calcium interfere with medication absorption?

Ali is probably right [Smile] but I take my biaxin after b'fast with calcium and other supps but not magnesium which I take at lunch.

So far no probs, but the biaxin sure does pack a punch!!

Sorry, too tired right now. [Frown]

Thought this would be an easy answer & didn't realize I was going to need a full-blown explanation with links & citing of research.

I'll try to research it for you later, if I have any strength.

Maybe someone else has info on minerals & abx handy.

[Embarrassed] egg on my face [Embarrassed]

I researched & can't figure out where I came up with that.

I don't know whether it was the product of a conversation with my LLMD or pharmacist and/or perhaps I misunderstood something.

I found interactions for Tetracyclines & Floroquinolones & some ABX can cause an increased uptake of calcium but I don't remember which.

I meant to go back & find it because I thought that it might be good information to know. Maybe tomorrow. [Roll Eyes]

I could swear I got that information from somewhere. Maybe it was an antiquated nursing book or something.

I would think that calcium's effect on the stomach's acidity might effect digestion and magnesium's laxative effect, speeding GI transit time might impact the uptake of the drugs, but I guess I've got nothing to back it up.

I guess I DON'T know what I'm talking about. I think I'll go back to bed & stop answering posts, lest I say something else stupid.

THIS is why it's good to always double-check your sources, especially when some of them may have neurological Lyme. [bonk]

Magnesium and calcium can significantly reduce the bioavailability of several antibiotics.

According to a document from Pacific Frontier Medical http://www.pacificfrontiermedical.com/pdfs/19.pdf , we're not supposed to take multi-mineral supplements or antacids 1 hour before or after taking macrolides abx (Biaxin, Zithromax...)

My LLMD says we should wait even longer (2-3 hours).
