I completed 6 weeks of BABS treatment (Mepron and Zithromax) about 1 month ago. I'm not on any Lyme meds right now.

I'm still experiencing debilitating fatigue and a complete inability to do ANY activity. Also, I've developed tachycardia, slightly elevated blood pressure and weight loss.

Are these symptoms of an inability to detox the die-off of BABS? What tests should I ask for?

I've been disappointed with my LLMD and my Primary has taken over my care (she's following Burrascano guidelines). So, she and I need some help with this.

Thank you for you guidance!!!

Would your doctor write a prescription for two important tests? RBC Minerals and Heavy Metals and the other - Detoxification Capability Panel (MetaMetrix)
www.metametrix.com
MetaMetrix Laboratory
4855 Peachtree Ind. Blvd.
Suite 201
Norcross, GA 1-800-221-4640

Their heavy metals panel includes aluminum which most labs don't test for. If you ever ate meals out often - the meals are prepared in aluminum pots.

It is good that your PCP even recognizes an inability to detox. What are you doing to aid in detox?

I'm not familiar with Babs - hope someone else will answer that question - however, the symptoms, cardiovascular, arrhythmias, high blood pressure can be due to other issues in your body.

Often while creating a die off of bacteria, the toxicity becomes more than the body can handle. Other environmental toxins which accumulated in our bodies, become a problem.

This is why the LLMDs often test for metals and mecury levels early on. That and because symptoms for Lyme and Mecury are similar.

There are also mold issues which can cause health problems. Maybe search mold here - there is a lot of really good information.

Hope you find the cause - it is pretty common for health issues to crop up during treatment - which were not there before.

Six weeks is not long enough most likely. I treated babs for almost two years.

KimDC, I agree that six weeks is not long enough treatment for Babesiosis. From what I understand, four months is the minimum treatment time and most people are treated much longer.

Dr. B. discusses Babesiosis starting on page 22 with treatment described on page 23. Some doctors are now prescribing four teaspoons of Mepron daily instead of two.

Can you get another opinion from a Lyme doctor?

I once had a severe babs herx and had VERY similar symptoms as you described. I had to wait two months before continuing meds.

and YES.. Treatment of babs takes a LONG time.. not six weeks.

I hope you feel better soon!!!

Wow, two months? That must've been an incredible herx.

Thanks so much for the tests and lab, Peedie. My PCP will order those.

Thank you, also, to the rest of you that responded about the length of treatment. My LLMD said that 6 weeks would "surely" kill all babs. He also said that the new cardiac symptoms were not related at all to babs treatment.

These are the statements that made me wonder if I should be seeing him at all.

My PCP is smart, compassionate and very interested in treating Lyme. She has hundreds of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia patients and wants to treat them after using me as the test case. Isn't that GREAT?!

Some people cannot tolerate mepron. They do much better on malarone. You might want to ask your doc about that drug.

Check with the Michigan Lyme Assn. They have a great hotline and can give you some good advice. There have an online website.

To me, it seems like your symptoms could just be due to Babesia or Lyme not being treated enough (i.e., the infections are actively causing those symptoms) as opposed to the symptoms being due to dead babesia not being detoxed.

I would consider that as a possibility for sure.

If you didn't see a herx or anything notable from Mepron, you may want to consider trying Malarone...at least 2 pills per day, going up to 4 or 5 per day.

It is about 50/50 in terms of who is helped by Mepron vs. Malarone. There are other options too though, but they are not used as much.
