My husband has been on the same dose of amox and malarone for the last two weeks. Night before last in the middle of the night he woke up with increased pain, chills and a fever of 101.
Now 18 hours later, he's "back to normal". Anyone experience mini herx? Suzeq

- Many of the symptoms on the roller coaster of lyme are not necessarily a herx but just the way the infections work - or the way the body works to combat all that.
Lyme and other tick-borne infections, even during treatment, will present all sorts of uncomfortable things for patients to endure. Only a degree of that is actual "herx."
Sounds typical of "just the way it is" - sometimes it's very difficult to figure out exactly what is going on but I'm so glad he's back to his normal (for this point). This could be a positive sign that his immune system is working.
He also may have been fighting something else that might be going around.
Still, since I assume he's treating babesia (or he'd not be on the malarone) and chills are a symptom of babesia, be sure he notes this for his next appt. with the LLMD. If there are other episodes like this, keeping tract of any patterns may help the doctor better determine the effectiveness of treatment. -

Once I started babs treatment, my symptoms would "flare" every week like clockwork on Friday evening. The flare lasted 48 hours.
After having this happen 4 weeks in a row, I reported it to the doc and he had me add artimesinin to encompass the flare.
(He said that babesia has a 1-week and a 2-week cycle, and that I was now experiencing the 1-week cycle.)
So I took the art starting Friday morning (before flare was scheduled to start) through Sunday night. The first week, it reduced the flare from 48 hours of suffering to only 6. Each week, it got less and less.
Then, eventually, I got a flare only every other weekend. That is the 2-week cycle.
Sounds like your husband had a flare 2 weeks into treatment. It will be interesting to see if he gets another exactly 2 weeks from that last flare (or 1 week). Mark your calendar.
If he does, I suggest adding artimesinin (if he is not already taking it) starting the day the flare is expected to start and take the art for 3 days in a row.
The brand I took was AllergyResearchGroup. This is the one my lyme doc considers best.
So, my doc referred to it as a "flare" and not a herx.
