I have sludge in my gallbladder from taking Rocephin and really don't want to give it up. Would I be crazy to continue it?
Any experiences would be appreciated!

Well, you'll likely lose your gallbladder if you continue. I still have bile duct issues from losing my GB 5 yrs ago. In other words, having the GB removed does not solve all problems!
Never took Rocephin.

Lymetoo - I'm having issues (severe pain and nausea) after my gb came out this past July. They did an MRCP and found a "fluid buildup" near where the gb used to be. I should find out more tomorrow. I'm kind of scared, though.
What kind of bile duct issues do you have?

I got gallbladder sludge from Rocephin too and stopped Rocephin, and my gallbladder went back t normal over a few months so I did not have to get it removed. I would not keep going unless you want your GB out, which is unnecessary, there are other antibiotics to choose from that are not as heavily biliary excreted.

I too had gallbladder issues and even though I quit the Rocephin I had to have it removed.
The stones had disappeared by my gallbladder looked like mush so it had to come out anyway.

Would someone please describe "gall bladder sludge"? What is it, how do your get rid of it, and what does it look like when excreted?

If I were you, I would stop the rocephin. Many people who have their gallbladders out continue having digestive issues throughout their lives.
Also, unless an operation is absolutely necessary, the stress it would put on your body, along with the stress from the Lyme, would not be good for you, and the risk of additional infection is undesireable.
My husband got stones with the Rocephin (We both have Lyme). He did not start having the gall bladder problems until after the 4 months of IV though.
They scanned his gallbladder, and he went on a very strict low fat, natural diet.
Six months later they scanned again, and our Dr. said the radiologist found it quite remarkable how much the stones had reduced.
He will get scanned again next month and we are hoping it will all be gone.
It's just my opinion, but I would stop the rocephin and go with other meds, and natural treatments. If you start having serious attacks they'll have to take it out. It's not worth losing your gall bladder and having to go through an operation.

I would suggest finding a new antibiotic. I had my gallbladder out and they STILL switched me to a new antibiotic!
As for what it looks like . . . my primary care doc told me that the surgeon told her that my gallbladder "looked liked it was about to blow"

Yes! But I took care of it with a Liver/Gall Bladder Flush. But my LLMD wants to make sure with an ultra sound before I continue (if he lets me continue!).

I've been here a long time and have heard plenty of people who took the Actigall the whole time while on Rocephin and still lost the GB. (same as ursodiol)

I had severe pain and diarrhea last year after having to take a lot of abx for a sinus infection. It created a stone in the duct.
So I had that removed and the duct was clipped.
Everything was MUCH better. However, I still get pain when I eat fats (not every single time, but often). Sometimes I get severe pain early in the morning before I've even eaten anything.

I had the scan before I started the Rocephin and my gallbladder was perfect. I had my first attack after 6 months and they did another scan and I had multiple stones.
I stopped the Rocephin and the stones did disappear but the doc said it had to come out.
The surgery went great and I had no problems afterwards. I healed really well...2 years later I have no digestive problems at all.

I don't want to lose my gallbladder so I decided to stop the Rocephin for a few weeks and then re-evaluate my condition. I am still on Zithromax but Rocephin hits the CNS better.
I was on Actigall but did not take enough. That stuff is horrible. Thanks for your responses!

When I was first put on Rocephin years ago, it helped my neuro Lyme and Lyme carditis tremendously, but my doctor at that time did not bother with actigall or even ultrasounds when I began having GB attacks a few months into treatment.
I tried going off Rocephin for a few weeks, did all kinds of home remedies in attempts to clear my GB, then restarting Rocephin, then stopping again after another attack--till finally, I ended up with a GB so infected I required immediate emergency surgery to remove it, and a case of pancreatitis as a parting gift.
Now that it's gone (the GB, I mean) i do not miss it, and have no digestive problems. I was put back on Rocephin 2 weeks after my surgery and never again had problems.
If you ask me, I did it the hard way. Unless you don't mind losing your GB, I'd think about trying another abx. Once the sludging starts, it can be hard to clear, and those GB attacks are PAINFUL. I'd rather go through labor again!

Took Claforan several years ago-Dosing is hard-three times daily and in my experience Rocephin is more effective.

Kim, if your gallstones went away, why did your doc want you to have the gallbladder out??
