I can't stand the palpitations anymore.

I use to have them once in a while, but the last couple of months they have been happening every day or every other day, and I can't stand it. It's been causing me deep depression, loss of appetite, constant crying, hopelessness, etc. [Frown]

I really don't know what to do anymore. The heart stuff scares me more than anything else. Sounds stupid but if I could have the lyme without the heart stuff, it would be SOOOO much better. The heart stuff is definitely some of the worst symptoms you can have.

I don't want to deal with it anymore. My cardiologist has done several tests and everything comes back within normal limits and he tells me everything is fine, etc.

Who else here has heart palpitations and symptoms? What do you do for it? I'm on a beta blocker, but it really doesn't seem to be helping the palpitations much.

What can be done about this? I am tired of this happening because as soon as it happens, I go spiraling back into depression and it takes a while to get out of it - until I have more heart symptoms and then I go right back into the depression. [shake]

I have palpitations but they are tolerable. Most of the time I don't worry about them. But yours must be WAY worse since they are distressing you so much!

Ask your cardiologist to try other meds. I'm on a calcium channel blocker. I don't know if it's better than a beta blocker or not. You won't know until you try it.

Any chance you can change drs? You need someone who is LISTENING to you!!!

I had palps, skipped beats, weird beats, pain, and flutters. My heartrate, after any exertion, even a mild one, would speed out of control and would not slow for hours. For many months I had to do everything in slow motion in order to keep this from triggering. I would wake in the night from weird heartbeats, almost like three in one, extra strong. It was bizarre and terrifying.

This is all many years ago. The bulk of it has passed. I now have only occasional pain, palps, etc. It happens mostly when herxing or flaring. But it is NOTHING like it was.

This WILL get better.

Lymetoo - I don't know how you cannot worry about them!!!!

I've been having them daily/every other day for a couple of months now and I'm at a point where I can't stand them anymore.

I used to have them occasionally, but they are more frequent now and I hate it. [Frown]

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

Like I said, yours must be much worse than mine. I've had them for about 8 yrs, so maybe I just feel like nothing bad is going to happen to me.

PollyAnna for sure!!! [bonk]

Now when the A-fib kicks in .. I get very worried!!!!

Can you find another dr?

PS.. how often do the palps occur? Every few minutes or hours or ..?

Posted by disturbedme (Member # 12346) on :

Well, the one day I had palps for 24 hours non-stop, but they were spread out and happening anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes apart, which wasn't that bad. But sometimes they happen much closer together, and those are the scariest. Sometimes they happen a few times and don't happen again that day, or sometimes they happen every so often all day, etc.

I've had the heart palps for probably almost as long as you have, but I had them happen even before I knew I had lyme. I was in college when they started happening and got them evaluated at that time, but everything was told to be normal. Had more testing more recently and still supposedly all 'normal'. They sure as heck don't feel normal!!!!! I want to be like the normal, happy people who don't have to deal with ANY heart issues!!!

Posted by bigstan (Member # 11699) on :

If you haven't tried Magnesium citrate, or Magnesium Malate I suggest you try this. Many of us are magnesium deficient do to lyme and it's co infection buddies.

Do a search of Dr Burrascano guidelines. He recomends not using the magnesium that has calcium in it as its not absorbed well.

I was in the same boat as you. Not sure if I was having a heart attack every day when I got the palps. I started supplementating Mag and the palps are now once a month. Which is so much better.

You can't heal if you are stressing about the heart palps. It seems like your Vagus nerve is infected by lyme. This will cause a lot of palps.

My doctor had me wear a monitor for over a week and turns out they were benign arrhythmias.

In my research on palpitations I found that a lot of people have arrhythmias that are apparently benign. I found information that thyroid problems (low or high) can cause palpitations. I had mine checked and that was not the problem.

I was able to get mine to stop by using futurebiotics colloidal trace minerals. I also increased and adjusted other minerals as necessary.

If you have a lot of die-off, your body uses extra minerals so you may be low.

I can't say for sure that this will help you and if you have any heart issues I would say you should check with your doctor before adding minerals.

Are they referring to them as PAC's or what?

Every few minutes would drive me up the wall too.

Bigstan - I do take magnesium, daily. I take magnesium glycinate and I take 300mg or more, sometimes my body will not tolerate more than that. Unfortunately, the mag does not seem to help me much at all. I wish this wasn't the case. I would LOVE for the mag to help.

Terry - I do have thyroid issues, but mine is hypothyroidism and it's in the normal ranges right now, so don't think that is the cause of this.

Tired of feeling completely lost and trapped.

I started having heart palps about 25 years ago and found out I had a Mitral Valve Prolapse. I took medication for it and it helped. Then I stopped taking it years later.

Then when I became ill with LD the palps started back much worse. I went on medication again but only for a few months because it lowered my bp too much.

Now my heart rate is abnormal 24/7. For me it is just mostly annoying and sometimes it makes me feel dizzy or lightheaded.

Have you tried any medication for yours?

My palps are PAC's. I occasionally have PVC's.

I would try the minerals Terry suggested. Maybe you're low in potassium?

I take Mega Multi Mineral by Solaray. I really take it for muscle cramps in my hands and feet. Works for that.

I have been low in potassium, so I would hope it helps my heart too.

Sorry, didn't read the whole thread....

But have you thought of going to an ND (but not one of those clinics that test you for everything under the sun....just someone who will listen to you and suggest things)?

If the regular docs can't stop the palps, maybe a chiropractor or someone could do some muscle testing and suggest some supps for your heart/nervous system/whatever it is that's acting up.

I would look for some recommendations from people in your area...for someone affordable who will just help you out with these baffling symptoms.

Even if it is from something like Lyme, or another condition caused by Lyme, perhaps they can just treat the symptoms so you will have relief.

But be wary of anyone who wants to make you do lots of expensive out of pocket testing of all yoru vitamins, minerals, etc. IMO, you just want someone that will address this one problem, not someone wanting to go on a wild goose chase.

That is why someone who does muscle testing would be good (like a chiro who leans the alternative route), because they will just muscle test supps on you, and not try to test you for everything by blood, saliva, etc.

I hope I'm making sense...I'm super tired.

Also, if it is so bad that it is making you hopeless and crying, you should think about boosting your seratonin with something like 5-HTP or psych meds like Zoloft. I hope you don't take that the wrong way, because I'm not saying it is in your head. I'm just saying if this is bothering you that much, the sadness could be hindering any kind of recovery, and no one should have to feel that upset.

All LLMD's should be giving psych boosters to their patients that are crying, etc, no matter what the cause. IMO.

So if this is sending you on a downward spiral, you will need to treat the heart issues, AND somehow control your feelings of hopelessness that will only hinder recovery. You just seem really upset (for valid reasons of course) and I would hate to see all the stress affect your wellbeing/relationships too much.

Magnesium, Calcium, TAURINE, CoQ10 and Hawthorn . . . all have helps settle down my heart rhythm.

You might need IV magnesium or shots (if you do shots, be sure to add B-12 to the syringe to minimize stinging).

You might also need some adjustment in your adrenal support as the adrenal stress hormones (high cortisol) can trigger this, too. Fish oil is good for that and Curcumin also has promise:

When I added COQ10 and alpha lipoic acid my palpitations settled significantly.

Then I added magnesium glycinate and my heart went crazy -- had to stop taking.

Recently I tried transdermal magnesium (from Ancient Minerals). When I first started, I began having heart symptoms again.

Then I remember reading somewhere (maybe in Klinghardt's info) that magnesium could cause a temporary worsening of palpitations.

The nice thing about transdermal is you can adjust the amount and work up to the correct amount.

All my heart tests also came back perfectly normal -- it is maddening!

I also use the CoQ-Quinol from Quantum Nutrition (qncenter.com). It is expensive, but it has helped me overall more than anything else I take.

I also agree with other posts --may be time for different treatment. Biaxin is what settled my heart symptoms rather quickly.

Good luck!

When I developed tachycardia and pvcs I discovered that brewers yeast alleviated both.

Really made a huge difference for me, just be sure to take your probiotics so you don't get a yeast infection.

Been taking it for 20 years. =)

What is brewer's yeast and is it gluten free????

Posted by Keebler (Member # 12673) on :

Yes, nutritional yeast is gluten-free. I take it for the B-vitamins and energy.

You would ask for the "nutritional yeast" flakes from your natural food store. You can buy in large or small flakes or powder. It's very light, weighing nearly nothing and yellow. Just be sure nothing is added. They also come in capsules but then stuff is usually added.

Although a yeast, this will not cause candida and actually helps to balance the good bacteria in your gut. You can go over to Wiki and get an idea about it and search further as there is likely much on this subject.

I'd start with just 1/2 tsp. in a glass of water, or sprinkled on tofu with some garlic powder, olive oil and sea salt. I've worked up to about a tablespoon once or twice day but when I began I'd get a buzz so start slow - AND start with this mid-way or after a meal as it can cause a bit of stirring on an empty stomach until you are used to it.

It's best to take before 3 pm as it can be energizing.

I have the heart symptoms and I despise them too. I have yet to figure out if there are any triggers, but morning and evening seem to happen the most. Sometimes from eating, but it's not definite enough to me.

I mainly have PAC's and an occasional PVC. I have chest pain and back pain and sometimes shoulder and arm pain. I have had shortness of breath. I have chest spasms which I'm almost sure are in the heart sometimes because I can feel the pulse skip. Sometimes my chest pain is sharp and just short of crushing.

I think about going to the ER, but I've been to the ER 5-10 times in the last 18 months and I'm tired of going. Each time, nothing is found.

I went and got another echo done on my own money by one of those Healthfair vans the other day. My cardiologist didn't want to give me another echo -- last one was over a year ago -- even though my PAC's have gotten worse. I should have a report of my new echo in a couple of weeks, but I got the impression from the tech that nothing significant was found.

I'm with you, disturbed. Some days I'm not sure if I'll kick the bucket or not. I try to find some solace in faith and just let the higher order of things play out.

For me, I think one of my triggers is hormonal. I've seen an endo before and previous testing was normal. I'll be seeing another endo that is highly recommended, but not until the end of next month.

Take care and stay positive.

I had this too and the only thing that
helped it was tx for Bart! Bart tx needs to

I also took Passion Flower and it help
the anxiety caused by the palps too.

I've been having palpitations (pvc's) for almost 6 years now. Did the 24 hr heart monitor, seems I have at least 3 pvcs an hour. I then did a stress test, no reason was found for my palpitations.

I was told sometimes healthy people have them & it doesn't shorten our lifespan. Still, sometimes when they are bad, the fluttering ones freak me most, I can't help but worry. Sometimes my chest aches if I have too many.

I try to relax and breath thru them. Like you, I also have a hypoactive thyroid. One thing I have noticed is caffeine makes them MUCH worse.

If I stop all caffeine, they lessen to where I barely notice them most days.

To be clear, while the names are sometimes mixed up, Brewer's Yeast is not the same as nutritional yeast. Nutritional Yeast is the yellow, flakey stuff. Grown as it should be, on beet or cane sugar, it is gluten free. Check the growing process of the brand purchased.

http://www.peter-thomson.co.uk/messageboard/coeliac-celiac/yeast.htm

"Is nutritional yeast gluten free?"
-
You need to find out how the yeast is produced.
If it is grown on malted barley it will contain gluten and is not oK.

If it is grown on sugar beet it will be gluten-free.

Lewis Labs Brewer's Yeast. The label says gluten-free.

Nutritional Yeast - by author Nettie Cronish

Excerpt:
. . .

Gluten-Free (note: discussing nutritional yeast here)

Primary-grown nutritional yeast is grown on mixtures of beet and sugar cane molasses.

After it is grown and the fermentation process is complete, the yeast is harvested, washed, pasteurized, and dried at a high temperature. As a result, this yeast is guaranteed to be free of the Candida albicans strain of yeast. It contains no gluten.

. . . .

Brewer's yeast is a byproduct of the brewing process. It is grown on hops, grain, and malt and develops a bitter flavour. [different from nutritional yeast and if grown on hops or barley, is not gluten free]

The bitterness is removed through a process which can lower the nutritional quality of the yeast. Sold in tablet or powdered form, it can be stirred into beverages or sprinkled into cereals.

Torula yeast is grown on waste sulphite liquid from wood pulp. Despite its range of B vitamins, minerals, and proteins, some consumer groups have questioned the safety of its growing methods.

Called my LLMD and he is putting me on Biaxin. I hoping and praying it helps tone down or get rid of the palpitations at least for a good long while.

The only antibiotic I was on for almost a year was Minocycline... and that is obviously doing NOTHING.... so I am hoping the Biaxin will do something and help me out here, cuz I'm having a REALLY tough time with the palps.

Has anyone else noticed the Biaxin helped their palpitations or heart symptoms?

Go easy on it. I took it for 18 mo while going thru Lyme treatment. It worked great for me.

HOWEVER, when i took it about 2 yrs ago for something else it made my heart do flip flops or whatever!!!

I hate to tell you this, but feel like I'd BETTER!!

Keeb.. Thanks for the clarification. Yes, the kind I was familiar with was not gluten free... back many years ago.

I guess now they have tried to make a lot of products gluten free which normally were not. I would still be "afraid" of it!! That's just me!

Augh, yeah, supposedly one of the side effects is heart palpitations..... Aughhhh, I really hope it doesn't cause this for me. This is exactly what I am using it to try to get rid of.... LOL. I've taking Biaxin before and don't remember that side effect, so hopefully it won't do it this time either.

I just want my palps to get better, that's all.

Just had an echocardiogram earlier and it was normal. My cardiologist said it was pretty much identical to the echo we did two years ago. So it doesn't explain the palps.... Grrrr...

Keebler, Lewis Labs is the type of brewers yeast I take. Mostly because it's what was available when I started taking it.

Tried another brand once when they were out of Lewis, and it tasted really bad. Do have problems with yeast infections though.

Does the nutritional yeast have the same nutrients as the Brewers? We're all glad you are such a font of knowledge!! Thanks for the research!

in the morning it gives me energy

My 16 yr old and I both have heart palps, racing heart etc. All our tests have come back okay from the cardiologists.
One time I went to the ER with my pulse at 165 bpm for no reason! All they did was drug test me. After that came back normal.. my pulse went back to normal as it always does and i was sent home with beta blockers (which did no good)

My heart palps have gotten a lot better after 17 months of oral abx. I know how you feel... it IS scary. But you aren't alone. It's a very common symptom. Mine were worse when I was laying down.

Another thing I use to have was a severe startle reflex. A car door waaaay down the road could slam and I'd jump. Any little noise would make me jump and I'd get an adrenaline rush from hell. I thought that was going to do me in eventually... because during sleep any little noise would wake me with the pounding heart stuff. That has also gone away with long term treatment.

Don't give up hope, don't let the depression get you down. I've been there and it's gotten a lot better [Smile]

My heart has been doing some really flaky stuff for the past 3 weeks. This is a new symptom for me. I don't know what it is, or even quite how to describe it, but it IS scary. Seems to get worse with stress or exertion, but can come on in the absence of either. Kind of feels like irregular beats, sometimes really long/slow/strong beats, flutters, squishes, missed beats, and sudden racing for no reason. I keep telling myself it's nothing. I hope I'm right. I'm also hypothyroid, and supposed to be starting Biaxin.

DM,

I am so sorry that you are suffering so much! I understand because I have suffered with them before too. I also would have periods of tachycardia so that I became fearful of going anywhere in case I would have an episode.

I had holter monitor which just showed 15 PVC's and PAC's in 24 hours, mostly PAC's and one atrial run. Echo came back normal...but I was lower weight, so they said may not be accurate. I'm tempted to get another one since my weight has increased.

It is frustrating to feel so many things with your heart and doctors just shrug their shoulders and say everything is fine!

Now, I don't know you may be doing these things already, but the things that seemed to help me the most were...daily epsom salt baths (oral mg made my palps worse!), large salads...I mean HUGE...full plate piled high, with about 1/2 cup sunflower seed (high in mg...naturally).

My palps are much much improved. It sounds simple, but if I get lazy and the salads start going by the wayside, I will start noticing them again...reminds me I need to make more today! I know you are veggie or vegan, can't remember, I am vegetarian right now, but mostly vegan, eat cheese maybe once per week, hate cow's milk.

I feel for you and I really hope this improves for you, I know what it feels like and it is TERRIBLE!

Take care,

Ocean

Being put on florinef helped my palps. I could feel a flutter-PAC's in my chest with them. On occasion I would feel a flip flop in my chest----those were PVC's. I also take atenolol. At times I can feel my heart pound but the rate of my pulse doesn't increase. What do your palps feel like. Are you on cortisol? I may have you mixed up with someone else. Sorry if I do.

Posted by disturbedme (Member # 12346) on :

I am on Florinef as well, but don't think that helps. Well, the holter I had showed one PVC. I think I have more PVC's than PAC's, but who really knows. Usually when I have them it feels like an extra beat or sometimes it feels like I'm on a roller coaster ride. Kind of feels like I'm short of breath when it's really a palp happening.

I am also on a beta blocker, 50mg Toprol-XL. They don't seem to help with the palpitations very much at all, unfortunately.

Posted by zil (Member # 12048) on :

Sorry disturbedme. I know the heart stuff is scarey. Maybe changing to atenolol instead of toprol or increasing your dose of florinef? Just a thought. Hope you find the answers soon.
When I was having a lot of trouble in the beginning of this I was laying in bed and felt an ongoing flutter feeling in my chest. It was such a bizarre feeling. Scared me to death. I was up and out the door to the ER. From there was the holter then atenolol.

Zil - Ohhhh no, I tried switching to Atenolol (my cardiologist thought it would help) a few weeks ago. That was a HUGE mistake. The Atenolol was AWFUL. My body did not like it whatsoever. My body never had any problems with the Toprol, so I am staying on that. The Atenolol made me very dizzy and lightheaded and have a stomach ache and it didn't help my tachycardia at all.

The main reason I'm on Toprol-XL is for my chronic tachycardia that I've had since I was 12. The Toprol helps that very well. I just wish it helped with the palpitations just as well too, but unfortunately it doesn't.
