Does that combo make sense to anyone? Was originally supposed to be Ceftin and Azithromycin, but I am allergic to Ceftin.

When I finally got the nurse, not even the doctor on the phone even though she said she spoke to him, she told me to take the Amoxicillin with the Azithromycin.

Does this make sense? What would be an alternative to Ceftin to go along with the Azithromycin?

Amoxicillin wasn't really working for me, which is one of the reasons why he switched me.

Why not. Penicillins are best drugs vs syphillis bar none. Given spirochettes looks a lot like treponema I tend to like them for that reason. Its been shown they are superior to cephalosporins for syphillis.

And btw how high dose of amoxy you been on? Extremly poor BBB penetration, need mega doses for it to get to CNS.

Also consider this - amoxy with less than 6 times/day and probenecid is waste and dangerous (because of bacterial resistance build up) !

It has half life of 1 hour -means there is no way you can keep concentration up without probenecid. And even with it it still has to be taken often to maintain bactericidal concentration

There been reference here about moxatag -ER Amoxy. At first look I wasnt impressed, but long half life is a great thing, it might be the good thing.I am gonna ask the my Dr if I can get it.

yes that makes sense. Usually Augmentin XR is added to keep the blood levels of Amoxicillin up for longer. Bicillin shots is another good idea.

Amox was at 500mg 2 tabs at 3 times a day so 3000mg a day plus the Probencid 3 times a day.

Amox didnt really do anything for me, so was given Ceftin with Azithromycin. When it was found out that I was alergic to Ceftin he told me to take the Amox again at the same dose and no Probencid, but add the Azithromycin at 250mg 2x a day.

So your telling me that Amox 3 times a day is a waste? Is that why I felt nothing on it? Should I aske for Augmentin XR? Sort of confused here...

And is it too soon for a cyst buster abx?

Well not exactly complete waste, but think its ineffective

I also don't see how augementin xr is usefull -it is used to overcome resistance (which BB supposedly does not develop , or at least not very fast) .Probenecid is what slows excretion, not augmenting -augementin is the one with beta lactam rings so resistant bacterial enzymes latch on it instead of abx

Personally I would go on 6 times a day schedule (every 4 hours including night) with amoxy at twice the dose (so it would total 12g /day) and keep probenecid

ohh and btw how do "measure effectiveness"? Did you measure blood levels? I would go by levels necessary to reach cns - you can find them on pubmed.

Ceftin btw has also very short half life. I really really want to know logic behind prescribing something with 1hour half-life at b.i.d intervals. I mean it couldnt be ignorance? or could it? I read arguments about patient "compliance" how hard for them is to keep up with frequent schedules blah blah blah - but it doesnt change the fact that its not effective and breeds resistance this way

I have been prescribed Moxatag ER (a type of amoxicilin that is extended release) at 775mg 2 times per day along with zithromax at 500 mg 2 times per day.

Lymers and coltman -- are you guys considered to have chronic lyme? Mine is in very early stage.

I am also doing Moxatag 775mg 2x daily.

If you are on the 3,000 mg per day along with probencid then it is actually like taking a stronger dose. Most people start at 3,000 mg per day and usually it is more like 6,000-12,000 mg per day. I would just do Bicillin shots, its much easier and works better than all that Amox. [Smile]

thats what got me out of bed and back to work-80% better.

Hmmm wonder why that option wasn't offered. Didn't know they could do that. Maybe because I'm not chronic and just had it for a few months?

this combo worked here for a family member

making sure that you are on the correct dosage of the ammox - blood levels can be taken
