hey, don't laugh. i hear all about the elderly and i go "well that ain't ME!!!".
but is it really? i'm 60 and i don't think i'm old or elderly.
but when it comes to things like flu and all this, should i be considered elderly and take different precautions?

Abstract:
Conventionally, ``elderly'' has been defined as a chronological age of 65 years old or older, while those from 65 through 74 years old are referred to as ``early elderly'' and those over 75 years old as ``late elderly.''
However, the evidence on which this definition is based is unknown. We have attempted to review the definition of elderly by analyzing data from long-term longitudinal epidemiological studies, and clinical and pathological studies that have been accumulated at the Tokyo Metropolitan Geriatric Hospital and the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology.
Our recommendation might be a starting point in developing a strategy for a successful society by reviewing the definition of elderly based on comprehensive evidence in all aspects of social, cultural and medical sciences.

I know elderly people in Florida that can run circles around me.
NOT fun!
I also turned what "feels" like elderly at age 29... due to Lyme, et al.
So it may be a state of mind rather than a specific age.

Southern girl... you made me laugh on that one!
Had a friend come in the other day. First thing he said was ...
"Man, I am feeling SO bad!"
I said I was sorry to hear it. He then said his brain wasn't working either and he was having a "dote day".
Then he said..
"You know, I think I'm having one of those herxy-timers things".
That about explains it all!
He was having a herxheimer and Alzheimer's... combined.

I think when it comes to the flu, 65 is probably the age at which you become eligible to be considered in the "at risk" group. You might call your doctor's office and ask as they would likely know.
I think many people consider retirement age as the age at which one can be classified as "Elderly"
From the Social Security Administration "Full retirement age (also called "normal retirement age") had been 65 for many years. However, beginning with people born in 1938 or later, that age gradually increases until it reaches 67 for people born after 1959."

When I was young elderly was over 40. Then when I was 40 elderly was over 60. Now that I am 63, elderly is being in a nursing home. I just can't see myself as elderly!

"Elderly" is a relative term, isn't it? The older I get, the younger they look.
Right now, I really don't think someone is elderly until around 80. lol And college kids....my, they're just babies.
I'm 47. To my great neices and nephews, I'm an old fart. But in my head, I'm just an adolescent pretending to be mature and responsible. Some day, though, my body feels like an old gray mare.

Two years ago, my almost 90 year old grandmother could run circles around me and she has spinal stenosis. Now I am no longer late elderly and can keep up with my kids, so does that mean I'm now a teenager?

My mom was in a mall early one morning and was in the rest room washing her hands. Earlier she had noticed a group of elderly folks walking the mall. Mom said to one of the women who was standing next to her, "I think its great what you guys are doing!"
The lady said, "Thanks, you can come join us if you want to." My mom said that was a wakeup call for her, lol.

I'm feeling pretty elderly today. I want to do what Sutherngrl says and get unelderly before I actually get elderly. Days like today I wonder if it will ever happen.
To me, the elderly are older ones that have trouble getting around. I see older people that can get around good in their 70's but for some reason I don't consider them elderly. I call them older not elderly. LOL

Hi, My mom is also 89. Except more eye problem. Mom can run circles around me. Goes dancing 2 X week,parties, goes out almost everyday walks really fast. She looks in her early 70`s. I sometimes almost become tad jealous that I am lucky if do 1 of things she does, including cleaning. Yeash, sad for us chronic Lymies, now in late stage++++. Uveitis,many co-infect. about 99 of the 100 symptoms. I am of coarse happy for her. Yet hard to swallow at times when she tells me all things she does. At my age they were going non stop. Why people do not get it. My Brain says go-go-go. Bod says No-No-No Grrrrrrrr Have to get mad at this crud sometimes, RIGHT? Hugggssss, to all in NEED.....
