Hello Pinelady,

I posted a question to you on mmbl's thread, but am concerned that you might not notice it, so...

The thread was re: thyroid issues and you asked the poster if they were on beta blockers. This is important to me because I'm on Betas and still have thyroid probs (hypo) after 2 years in remission and off abx.

Can you explain the relationship between the two a bit further or post a link? Would be very grateful for the info.

All I can tell you ping is my cousin had severe

graves when they finally figured out what was wrong

with her. The beta blockers did nothing for her.

They told her if she had found out sooner they

may have helped for a while while they tried to

get the Graves under control, but with her

severity she had no other option but removal. I

was trying to gauge her severity by how long she

has been on them if she was on them. Sometimes

there is nothing that will work and it has to go.

Pinelady,

Thanks so much for your quick reply. Was wondering what the reference was about... Sorry about your cousin; Grave's is so debilitating.

I've been on Betas now for about 5 yrs. for severe hypertension & tachycardia. I'm also on Armour Thyroid. Don't know how these 2 rx's will eventually end up playing out on me, but am always open to suggestions.

The BBlockers cause fatigue, as does hypothyroid; I'm kind of locked in with these two and looking for possibles to bring to my docs attention. I'd like to break free. The hypertension is the major worry.

Thanks again!

Are you sure you do not have a pheochromocytoma?

Beta blockers suppress thyroid function more on the cellular level.

There is also a possibility that you are not on enough thyroid. If the doctor uses TSH to set the dose, it may be resulting in too low of a dose, especially with Lyme with can cause pituitary/hypothalamus hypofunction. The best tests should be free T4 and Free T3. T3 levels should probably be in the upper 1/3 of the range for optimal health. (my opinion based on a lot of reading. I'm on Armour, too - 2-3/4 grains)

Also, recently, I have come across a couple of papers on how Lyme caused pituitary dysfunction not only affects the thyroid, but the adrenals, and this could be the cause of some of your fatigue and blood pressure issues.

Beta blockers cause potassium to be spared. So, if you have any kidney or adrenal issues, beta blockers can lead to a build up of potassium and this can lead to fatigue and other issues.

If you have fatigue, then how do you know you are in remission? Fatigue is my main symptom and I am not in remission.

Tish

Pinelady,

No, I'm not at all sure I don't have this. Pheochromocytoma evidently rings a bell with you, can you explain why? Do you have brief info on testing?

Tish,

You asked, "How do I know I'm in remission".

Answer - It's complicated, but fatigue was not my major sx with Lyme. All active neuro sx's gone, some noteable long-term or permanent damage from disease and tx is present. I've no doubt blown out one or more systems and am prep for an Internist / CFS specialist who is familiar with Lyme. By far, the major issue with me is likely the severe hypertension and tx w/Beta Blockers, lots of them, causing much of the fatigue.

I very much appreciate the info. provided. Am printing it out and researching (at lunch / breaks). Any additional ideas / info is most welcome.

Pinelady,

Just did some Googling on this and don't think it quite fits, but pretty sure my fatigue involves adrenals in addition to HBP/BB's.

Will take info to Internist in January. Sure would like to remedy this situation...

http://highbloodpressure.about.com/od/associatedproblems/a/pheochromocytom.htm

There are a lot of symptoms not listed here such

a orthostatic hypotension-passing out when going

from sitting to standing.

Destruction of tendons and ligaments-turn to mush.

Panic attacks often at night and no impending notice.

Lots more I can't think of====
But I did have a challenge test to see if I had one. It was neg.
