I just started using Mangosteen juice, hoping it will alleviate some of my weird eye symptoms.

How long will it take before I see any improvement? And how much improvement?

Thanks.

I just started yesterday so we can compare notes!!

Did Wildcondor herx from it? now we want to know!

I noticed symptom alleviation immediately. Within an hour, eye muscle pain and blurred vision were diminishing. Then my sinuses started to run and did so for two days. I had to chase them down. Well, jus' kiddin' on that last one.

In 24 hours, light sensitivity and floaters were greatly lessened. I missed my "normal" self for a little while, you know?

Then my intestines ran for three days. Then my gums stopped bleeding. It was a very exciting week...

And, no herxing, evah.

May I ask what brands you both are using? We all use different ones. I do the Ultra one. Good luck with it - let us know how it goes -

I am interested in trying mangosteen juice. Is this something I can pick up at any grocery store? I would imagine any health food store would have it?

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

Hi - healthford stores carry several brands. Healthfood stores carry the brand I drink, which is the Ultra one with 70 minerals added. I can also get it cheaper online from vitacost. The strongest version is called Xango and it's sold multi-level.

For anyone who tries it, go slowly, and drink a lot of water too.

Posted by steelbone (Member # 14014) on :

Thx for this thread. I just order some Xango...

Posted by UnexpectedIlls (Member # 15144) on :

The xango and mangosteen jucies are watered down with other juices which just adds MORE sugar and LESS of the actual fruit mangosteen. I order my mangosteen from superorganicfoods.com It comes in a powder and is the WHOLE fruit ground up.. no fillers, just the fruit and rind which is most important. Cannot say it helped my vision.. actually my vision has only gotten worse with double and blurry vision and 100's of floaters..

I have no affiliation with this company.. I just wanted the REAL effects of mangosteen in it's WHOLE... I use it everyday in my smoothie and for 22 bucks the bag lasted me almost a year! [Smile]

Posted by jenny76 (Member # 18205) on :

How many ounces a day are we supposed to be doing?

I bought the brand "Genesis Today" with nothing added, no sugar, no other juices, pure Mangosteen and I got it at Whole Foods.

It was expensive!

Posted by steelbone (Member # 14014) on :

Since all brands are a bit different I would do half of the serving size on the bottle and work my way up to what the full serving is...

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

Well, we got some mangosteen action here today! [woohoo]

Unexpected, I think Xango is the pure version, with no additional juices. The other juice versions are blends. Mango-xan is one of the more tart versions.

I get best results with the Ultra. Maybe because it also has the 70 minerals added from the Utah seabeds? I don't know.

Very interesting that it hasn't helped your eyes! That was the first place I was affected.

Just out of curiosity, would you be interested in trying an experiment with the Ultra mangosteen juice? It does have sugar in it, tho.

Jenny - I'd suggest starting out small. If you don't notice anything, then go up a little at a time. I drink about a half-ounce in the am and pm now, but in the beginning, I did a lot more.

Once you find a juice you like, it may be cheaper online.

Posted by UnexpectedIlls (Member # 15144) on :

jenny I believe you can get that same brand at iherb.com for a lot cheaper.. I get all my herbs and supps and a lot are like 40% cheaper!!!

I think I will try that experiment started with the juice at iherb... because my eye symptoms are horrible.. and constant.

Posted by lymie_in_md (Member # 14197) on :

Here's a far cheaper approach, just buy mangosteen powder. The powder is the dried out flesh and pericarp which is 95% of mangosteen's benefit. The juice provides very little benefit so many bottler's buy powder and put it back into the juice to provide it's benefit.

You can buy 1lb of mangosteen powder for 35 dollars. At that price you could make gallons of mangosteen juice by just putting the powder in organic grape juice or whatever juice you like. It would be the same benefit.

Just a thought.

Posted by Carol in PA (Member # 5338) on :

I bought several bottles of the Ultra Mangosteen at Vitacost, but didn't notice much.

I also bought three or four brands with the pericarp, from iHerb.
Nothing.

When I tried taking mangosteen capsules, I immediately got kidney pain.
Ugh.

I already had kidney pain after taking Resveratrol, and I was leery of doing harm to myself.
I've been afraid to try again.

Carol

Bob - have you tried the powder?

Carol - did you have any noticeable Lyme eye symptoms before you tried the Ultra?

I got the Genesis brand as well, but I wimped out and got the stuff that has other juices added--yes, I know thast's knocking down the potency, but I was afraid of it.

Ditto. Makes a big difference which brand you have as to effect and how much to drink. The higher the quality, the less you'll need to drink.

Yes, you can "herx" on it. (it's a relative term! [Wink] )

Robin,
I am VERY nearsighted, with astigmatisms.
Mild floaters.

At the time, I was looking for overall improvement, and I did notice that I felt slightly better. But not much.

I don't recall any visual results.

2 weeks now,i have the Ultra mangosteen juice, within three days, my floaters was.....GONE,

I thought then mangosteen was kinda sweet, i got mines from the vitamin shoppe online. you can also get this same brand in any vitamin shop in your area.

i would stop taking it, since i dont have the floaters at this time.

i have candida, and i dont want anything messing with my candida treatment

i been trying since april of 2009 to get my candida under controll...i been weak for regular food.. off and on,

i been trying hard to stick to the candida plan,

i feel guilty... i had wendy's today, only cause i was out with my daughter, i have to learn more will power. aggrrrrr.

Do you take it while you're taking antibiotics? What all is it suppose to do to help? I'd love my eyes to get better!

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

The Ultra is VERY sweet. Couldn't stand the taste.

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

Now how did I know you'd show up at some point, Lymetoo?! Btw, if you don't drink Xango, do you get eye symptoms again?

Ok - street is our newest testifier - floaters gone. Can I get an amen?!

Street, mango-xan is pretty tart, and Xango could be close to sugarless. What say you, Lyme2?

Re willpower to maintain a noncandida diet, I've noticed that I had to be prepared - literally travel with sugarless foods I could pop in my mouth when hungry, and do not go near the entrance of a bakery!

Carol - another thought on my degree of improvement - the mangosteen juice was the first big antioxidant treatment I did. Maybe you had already treated with other kinds of antioxidant supplements by then? Just a thought.

Still, it works for me, 'cause if I don't drink it, I get into trouble symptomwise.

lilacs - yes, I've taken my antibiotic throughout. The antibiotic I'm doing for Lyme, clindamycin, has never done anything for my eyes. Only the mangosteen juice affects that. Plus keeps my intestines regular.

If anyone new has anything to report, please do!

I actually thought the Genesis brand tasted pretty good. I didn't use it long enough (2 bottles) to notice a difference though.

Posted by Starfall1969 (Member # 17353) on :

I'm definitely NOT seeing any difference in floaters or other things yet.

In fact, driving home today, I had a huge web-like floater in the middle of my vision.

And I took it on an empty stomach this morning, and have felt very pukey since then.

Can't tell if it's the mangosteen or if I have the stomach bug going around.

Posted by jenny76 (Member # 18205) on :

Starfall, I felt that way when I took it this morning too. It didn't feel good for a little while. :-(

Posted by lymie_in_md (Member # 14197) on :

I used the powder for some time, mix a teaspoon in juice or just put it in your cereal or salad, what ever works best.

Just google "mangosteen" bulk powder there are a number of vendors. I found one vendor selling it for 29.99 a lb of powder. Enough to last 1 or two months taking it every day.

Posted by lymie_in_md (Member # 14197) on :

If you need to have a juice to help with symptoms. Invest in a juicer. If that is too difficult, pineapple juice, cranberry, or black cherry or a combo is probably a better alternative to mangosteen, noni, or goji.

I use those three juices, because they have health benefits too.

Pineapple juice at least provides you with bromelain an enzyme to help digest proteins and fats.

I wonder sometimes if there isn't someone in tahiti paying 25 dollars a bottle for cranberry juice, because it's a big time superfruit?

Checking back in to see what's going on.

Looks like all of us are responding differently.

Also looks like we're taking/trying various versions of mangosteen.

For me, the Ultra mangosteen juice is the only supplement saving my eyes. Plus keeps my intestines regular. I have no financial affiliation. The juice is a necessary expense for me.

I'm sorry that that it looks like not everyone is benefiting from it the way I have.

When I started it, I also drank it with a lot of water too. Now I just drink a little of the juice.

If anyone has anymore helpful info re use of mangosteen, please share it. Thx -

There is no answer to that. Every mangosteen product is different. Some are very strong, some are very weak.

If it's a cheap one, you may have to drink more of it to get the same result...or you may not get ANY result.

As I recall, I went up on my initial amount of Ultra mangosteen to get a good effect in the beginning, plus drank lots of water with it. Then I backed down to I'd say 1/2 oz in am and pm.

Effect of a mangosteen dietary supplement on human immune function: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
Tang YP, Li PG, Kondo M, Ji HP, Kou Y, Ou B.

Department of Preventive Medicine, Yanjing Medical School, School of Public Health and Family Medicine, Capital Medical University, Beijing.

The effect of a mangosteen product containing multivitamins and essential minerals was tested on immune function and well-being in healthy adults. A randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 59 healthy human subjects (40-60 years old). Changes from baseline immune function were measured after a 30-day consumption of the mangosteen product and the placebo. The subjects' self-appraisal of their health status was also surveyed. A xanthone-rich mangosteen product intake increased mean values for peripheral T-helper cell frequency (P = .020) and reduced the serum C-reactive protein concentration (P = .014). Increases in peripheral CD4/CD8 double-positive (DP) T-cell frequency and serum complement C3, C4, and interleukin (IL)-1alpha concentrations were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the placebo group (DP, P = .038; C3, P = .017; C4, P = .031; IL-1alpha, P = .006). At the end of study, serum IL-1alpha and IL-1beta concentrations in the study group were significantly higher than that in the placebo group (IL-1alpha, P = .033; IL-1beta, P = .04). Furthermore, more participants in the experimental group reported greatly improved overall health status compared with participants receiving placebo (P = .001). The results indicated that the intake of an antioxidant-rich product significantly enhanced immune responses and improved the subject's self-appraisal on his or her overall health status.

Anti-cancer effects of xanthones from pericarps of mangosteen.
Akao Y, Nakagawa Y, Iinuma M, Nozawa Y.

Gifu International Institute of Biotechnology, 1-1 Naka-Fudogaoka, Kakamigahara, Gifu 504-0838, Japan; Tel: +81-583-71-4646.

Mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana Linn, is a tree found in South East Asia, and its pericarps have been used as traditional medicine. Phytochemical studies have shown that they contain a variety of secondary metabolites, such as oxygenated and prenylated xanthones. Recent studies revealed that these xanthones exhibited a variety of biological activities containing anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer effects. We previously investigated the anti-proliferative effects of four prenylated xanthones from the pericarps; alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, gamma-mangostin, and methoxy-beta-mangostin in various human cancer cells. These xanthones are different in the number of hydroxyl and methoxy groups. Except for methoxy-beta-mangostin, the other three xanthones strongly inhibited cell growth at low concentrations from 5 to 20 muM in human colon cancer DLD-1 cells. Our recent study focused on the mechanism of alpha-mangostin-induced growth inhibition in DLD-1 cells. It was shown that the anti-proliferative effects of the xanthones were associated with cell-cycle arrest by affecting the expression of cyclins, cdc2, and p27; G1 arrest by alpha-mangostin and beta-Mangostin, and S arrest by gamma-mangostin. alpha-Mangostin found to induce apoptosis through the activation of intrinsic pathway following the down-regulation of signaling cascades involving MAP kinases and the serine/threonine kinase Akt. Synergistic effects by the combined treatment of alpha-mangostin and anti-cancer drug 5-FU was to be noted. alpha-Mangostin was found to have a cancer preventive effect in rat carcinogenesis bioassay and the extract from pericarps, which contains mainly alpha-mangostin and gamma-mangostin, exhibited an enhancement of NK cell activity in a mouse model. These findings could provide a relevant basis for the development of xanthones as an agent for cancer prevention and the combination therapy with anti-cancer drugs.

Antifungal activity of alpha-mangostin against Candida albicans.
Kaomongkolgit R, Jamdee K, Chaisomboon N.

Oral Diagnosis Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Naresuan University, Phitsanulok, Thailand. [email protected]

This study was conducted to examine the activity of alpha-mangostin against Candida albicans, the most important microorganism implicated in oral candidiasis. Its activity was compared to Clotrimazole and Nystatin. Results showed that alpha-mangostin was effective against C. albicans, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were 1,000 and 2,000 microg/ml, respectively. The C. albicans killing activity of alpha-mangostin was more effective than Clotrimazole and Nystatin. The cytotoxicity of alpha-mangostin was determined and it was found that alpha-mangostin at 4,000 microg/ml was not toxic to human gingival fibroblast for 480 min. The strong antifungal activity and low toxicity of alpha-mangostin make it a promising agent for treatment of oral candidiasis.

Great info Lymetoo! Thanks for sharing :-)

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

I have read that there are 43 xanthone compounds in the ground-up mangosteen rind.

Note that these scientific statements add more to the discussion than just saying which body parts it helps us with.

They mention the boosting of T-helper cell and NK killer cell counts, and down-regulation of various inflammatory cascades plus serum C-reactive protein concentrations.

Also, Lymetoo, if the xanthones are anti-fungal, does this then mitigate the impact of the sugars of the juices that are in the mangosteen blends? I bet it does, as I have never had any problem with candida symptoms while I have drunk the sweet Ultra version.

Posted by kitty9309 (Member # 19945) on :

None of these studies were conducted by the drinking of straight juice.

The first study above used a "mangosteen product containing multivitamins and essential minerals ".

How do we know it was not the vitamins/minreal that had the immune boosting effect?

The scond study used "four prenylated xanthones from the pericarps"

Once again, not straight juice as it is sold. They used the extracted xanthones to test for anti-bacterial effects.

The third "study was conducted to examine the activity of alpha-mangostin against Candida albicans"

Again, they tested this using a purified extract of mangosteen, not the juice.

I am not saying these extracts or purified components do not have bactericidal activity, just that drinking the juice is not going to treat an infection.

Do you have any studies that used the plain juice of mangosteen and it's effects?

The extracts are much more concentrated than the juice.

Thanks in advance for any info you can point me toward.

Hmmmmm...

So what's in it?

How much are you getting of what? Well that's anyone's guess. All we have are Xango's ingredients, since Xango wont release any further information, and as you can see by viewing their label, no nutritional information (Amount/Serving, % DV) has been established.

At first, the excuse was, XanGo LLC does not publish the mangosteen content of its product claiming proprietary confidentiality. But now that the patent has been rejected, no longer proprietary, what's stopping them? Just a guess, but maybe lack of substance.

-------------------------------------------------

After you receive your rather expensive fruit punch you will see on the label only TRACES of nutritional elements.

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

Go to Pub Med and type in "garcinia mangostana" for more.

Robin.. I think it must somewhat mitigate the effect of the sugar. The sugar in some products is not real sugar, it's the fructose from the other fruits used to flavor the juice.

Mangosteen by itself (if it's the beneficial RIND) is VERY BITTER.

xango did nothing to me, I wouldnt buy it again.

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

Kitty, this is not the straight juice of the fruit.

What happens is the rind of the fruit gets ground up and the xanthone compounds get extracted from it. Then they get put in a juice blend of whatever companies choose to make.

The 70 minerals added to the Ultra blend come from the Trace Minerals company which extracts them from the Utah (ex)seabeds.

I used to take their mineral products and we still can. The minerals harden my nails. They do not affect my eyes, sinuses, intestines or gums the way the mangosteen juice does.

I've already done that experiment doubleblind! Meaning no one knew I had Lyme then.

Jenny, I'd say take less and drink a bit of water too. I never herxed, but maybe others have.

Didn't Dr. Oz say that Mangosteen was an excellent fruit and contained large amounts of anti-oxidants???

I thought I recalled that on Oprah about a year or two ago?

Also, Acai is very good for you too.

I have tried Mangosteen and liked it. I went off it because I was lazy about getting more.

I am going to try it again and will report.

The way I look at it, is that we think nothing of spending hundreds if not thousands of dollars on meds. If the mangosteen works for some, than personally I feel it's a small price to pay.

Even if it's placebo, again small price to pay for feeling good eh?

Everyone's bodies are different. Perhaps this does work for some. Just like some claim that Rife works well and some claim that abx have worked. Others go the natural route i/e herbals etc....

I think we're all simply different and there is no one size fits all. The negative reports are just as important as the positive reports here - it shows us more of the full picture.

My opinion is that it's important to keep trying stuff till we find what's right for us. Sez also Goldilocks...

PS.. I moved 10 miles down the road 2 yrs ago. Not exactly what you would call a big move!
