and nothing works.

I tried clorox and H2O rinses, peroxide, vinegar and even Nystatin liquid twice a day. I don't know what else to do.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks!

jennie,

Sorry you are having such a thrush problem.

Have you tried increasing your probiotics substantially and cutting out all sugar?

Hope you find something that works.

You may have to back off antibiotics a couple of

days and doubling your nystatin. I would call my

LLMD. He may offer a scrip for lozenges. Clotrimazole.

OIl pulling. Each morning use either sunflower or sesame oil...a TBSp or whateve amount you can handle in your mouth for up to 20 minutes...

Swish it around your mouth and through your teeth...the spit it out in toilet...

IT attractw candida/yeast/ viruses and bacteria...and will clean the plaque off your teeth.

Do this each morning for a month and see how your thrush is doing.

It may never clear well while you are still on abx. Others can tell you their advice...as I have only done this wit success when off abx.

Can I use Diflucan while on rifampin?

You didn't mention any herbs. Many herbs will help with candida. You could try olive leaf extract or thyme spirits or oregon grape root tincture. Many more but those are the ones hubby has used most.

I second the doubling of Nystatin. I used to have the liquid too, until I found out it came in tablet form. Maybe ask your dr. for the pill kind, as I found the liquid yucky.

My salivia feels like glue sometimes; I know what you mean. It does take a good few days for the extra Nystatin to kick in, but it did help me.

Try to hold (for a few minutes)1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil in your mouth before swallowing it. Caprylic acid and lauric acid in it are very helpful.

Do this a few times a day for a few days.

Be sure to *sanitize your toothbrush* so you don't re-infect yourself. Pour a little H2O2 on the brush - then a 50% solution of clorax and water (it will bubble) and - then rinse it very well under running water. Do this after brushing your teeth.

Then...pump in probiotics. I personally like Essential Formulas.

LOTS...loading doses (5 capsules) one hour before a meal with a full glass of water 2 times a day.

The good guys help to "manage" yeast.

I occasionally brush my teeth and mouth with Hibiclens. It's usually used as an antiseptic for skin. Be sure to rinse completely and do not swallow this stuff.

I will try the coconut oil and Hibiclens.

I have been sanitizing my toothbrush with clorox after each use.

Thanks!

I open the probiotic capsule and swish the powder around in my mouth.

How about probiotic rinse?

If you can take garlic..one of my doctor's says it will destroy it.

Olive leaf extract would help too.

If you try the nystatin, you may want to use the tablets. Our llmd told us the liquid has sugar in it.

We also take theralac. It's expensive, but worth it.

Diflucan IMO works better than nystatin, but don't know the answer as to whether you can take it with rifampin. Might ask your pharmacist or llmd.

Definitely use nystatin tablets instead of the liquid, which is full of sugar that feeds the yeast.

The tablets come in 500,000 IU and are very inexpensive.

Everybody is different, but I will tell you what worked for me and my yeast-carpeted tongue.

If you have bad thrush like I did, I had to take 2 tablets 4 times a day. I would crush 2 of the doses using a pill crusher that cost few bucks at wal-mart.

The crusher is basically a plastic bottle with a thick lid. You put the tablets inside and screw on the lid, and ,voila, crushed pills.

Mix the crushed nystatin with water and swish it around your mouth for a minute. It tastes very bitter so have something on hand to wash it down with! This should help take care of the upper gastro yeast.

Take the other 2 doses by just swallowing the tablets. These will better treat the lower gastro yeast.

I also take a probiotic. I tried most of the expensive ones but found that Digestive Advantage/Sustenex worked best for me. It is fairly inexpensive and is available at wal-mart and target. It does not have to be refrigerated either which is very nice.

Gentian Violet

It is the only thing that cleared up oral thrush in my son's mouth when he was a baby. Ask for a prescription. It is very purple but boy does it work.

I have a terrible time with thrush, too. Now that I have it under control, as soon as I feel it coming back I am quick to up my probiotic load and to take the herbal remedy.

To get thrush under control I took diflucan for a week (Nystatin never seemed to help me at all), made sure I brushed, flossed, and water picked regularly, kept my toothbrush sanitized, followed an anti-candida diet - all the usual stuff. The thing that pushed me over the edge from miserable with a coated stinging tongue (for months) to pretty much normal was the addition of Bio-K to the mix. Bio-K is a yogurt shot, lots of good bacteria. It's better than yogurt or kefir (both of which I tried without success). I let it sit in my mouth before swallowing.

The probiotic products I use regularly are: Florastor (saccharomyces boulardii lyo), Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic Complete (25 billion CFU's multi-species probiotic supplement), Standard Process prebiotic Inulin (to create a hospitable environment for the probiotics), and Bio-K Plus CL1285 Original (minimum of 50 billion fresh, live & active L. acidophilus & L. casei bacteria).

I also take Systemic Formulas Bio Command 4 FungDX Dietary supplement when I feel like I need it to combat thrush/yeast overgrowth.

I used to have terrible yeast problems-nystatin and/or diflucan wouldn't touch it.

Then a lyme friend pointed me to lactoferrin-I take one of Jarrow's lactoferrin daily(from vitacost) and, tho, I'm back on bicillin, ketek & flagyl I haven't had any yeast problems.

From the wikipedia article on lactoferrin-

Antifungal activity

Lactoferrin and lactoferricin inhibit in vitro growth of Trichophyton mentagrophytes, which are responsible for several skin diseases such as ringworm.[36] Lactoferrin also acts against the Candida albicans - a diploid fungus (a form of yeast) that causes opportunistic oral and genital infections in humans.[37][38]

Fluconazole has long been used against Candida albicans, which resulted in emergence of strains resistant to this drug. However, a combination of lactoferrin with fluconazole can act against fluconazole-resistant strains of Candida albicans as well as other types of Candida: C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis.[37]

Antifungal activity is observed for sequential incubation of Candida with lactoferrin and then with fluconazole, but not vice versa. The antifungal activity of lactoferricin exceeds that of lactoferrin. In particular, synthetic peptide 1-11 lactoferricin shows much greater activity against Candida albicans than native lactoferricin.[37]

Administration of lactoferrin through drinking water to mice with weakened immune systems and symptoms of aphthous ulcer reduced the number of Candida albicans strains in the mouth and the size of the damaged areas in the tongue.[39] Oral administration of lactoferrin to animals also reduced the number of pathogenic organisms in the tissues close to the gastrointestinal tract.

Candida albicans could also be completely eradicated with a mixture containing lactoferrin, lysozyme and introakonazol in HIV-positive patients who were resistant to other antifungal drugs.[40]

Such antifungal action when other drugs deem inefficient is characteristic of lactoferrin and is especially valuable for HIV-infected patients.[41] Contrary to the antiviral and antibacterial actions of lactoferrin, very little is known about the mechanism of its antifungal action. Lactoferrin seem to destroy the cell wall and binds the plasma membrane of C. albicans.[38]

The diet and using natural antifungals worked for me (garlic and coconut oil etc) but it took a long, long time.

I'm hoping it won't take that long this time since I'm also on synthetic antifungals. Though the thrush on my tongue isn't bothersome, I am tired of looking at it.

vfend for systemic yeast and mold.
no sugar,yeast, whey, gluten
acyclovir to prevent viruses.
must go off abx treatment until clear
high dose probiotic.
nothing will cure systemic yeast as long as you are
on long term abx.

They had me, as I recall, spread it in my son's mouth with a Qtip. Now that I look back I'm sure it was just another symptom of congential Lyme. He had it so badly his whole mouth was white and I couldn't get rid of it.

The Gentian Violet cleared it right up. But it's like deep purple food coloring.
