Does anyone else have a high strep titre? If so, are you taking an antibiotic that specifically lowers your strep titre? I read somewhere that chronic strep is very common in Lyme. I have a high strep titre and was wondering how it should be addressed.

Hi PossibleLyme - I had my tonsils removed at 2 yoa and never had a strep run on me when dx with TBD almost 50 yrs later. However, it seems to be gaining in popularity among some to have children's tonsils removed to assist in solving the strep / Lyme relationship problems. Don't know what to make of this, since if not your tonsils, then your heart valve? (Since strep is a traveler.) Also, strep reportedly responsible for many psych problems in kids, say some docs.
Will bump up your message for those here who definitely know a lot more about this than I do.

I had high strep levels as well, but mine resolved with tx on Doxy and Rifampin.
I guess they'll be retested the next time I go to the LLMD, so we'll see.
So strep is responsible for psych problems in some kids? I wonder if that's what my son's problem is. He acts absolutely possessed sometimes, and he does seem to get sick a lot with ear infections, sinus infections, and suspected strep (they rarely actually run tests on him, but I think they should).

This is what a Dallas psychiatrist is contending. He's recommending tosilectomy in numerous cases; exactly what percentage, I don't know. Hope this isn't another "Walter Freeman solution".
Mine has been high for years. .the ASO. Took months of amoxicillian and it is still high...

Mine is high too... and the ASO went up while on Amoxicillin which baffled my LLMD that was treating me at that time...because they said it should have decreased with treatment.

Research PANDAS. Kids develop it from untreated/chronic strep infections. It usually involves the sudden onset OCD and some kind of tic.
My kids (age 19 & 23) had their tonsil & adenoids removed on 3/10/10. They are still in the recovery stage. The ENT said their tonsils were full of infection. Their tonsils looked normal when she examined them in her office.
The test that was the most useful is the DNASE-B AB. Their titers were 3 and 5 times the normal. My husband's titers are 8-9 times the normal. He is planning on having his tonsils removed next month.

Mine is very high as well. My DNase-B AB is 1360 when it should be below 85. If you do a search you will see a thread I just posted about this as well asking how to get rid of chronic strep.
I have found out that this can be very difficult to treat. I have been on abx for over a year and my strep is still not under control.
Also I have heard from a few people that getting the tonsils removed may not necessarily be the answer. There are some who have high strep levels that no longer even have their tonsils. So I would definitely research that before deciding to go in that direction. It may not resolve the issue.
Strep can be in other areas and not just isolated to the tonsils.
Here is a quote from something I read online about strep:
"The bug can leave the tonsils, get into the blood stream and take up residence in the kidneys, or in the heart valves causing rheumatic fever or kidney disease (post streptococcal glomerular nephritis. -a degenerative disease..) There is also the possibility the disease can become systemic in susceptible and compromised people."
It seems that strep is very tricky and can be really difficult to treat. I am currently having a hard time with it myself. If I can figure out how to get rid of it I will surely let you all know what was done.

Right, on all counts, Pam. These strains tend toward abx resistance and are difficult to deal with. Tonsilectomy across the board isn't necessarily a curative measure and as you've posted, the strep likes to travel to other sites.
I had my tonsils removed when I was a toddler and still have all the complications that Lyme could induce. Removing infected organs is not an absolute resolution of psych or other issues.
