I will be starting Larium soon for a very persistent case of Babesiosis. I will be taking one dose every five days.

For those who have taken it, how did you do on it? Did you take it in the morning or in the evening? Did you experience side effects, if so to what degree? How long did you take it, and do you feel it was beneficial?

Any information is appreciated!

I had hallucinations the first two times I took it. I never had them after that.

I took it as often as you do along with Malarone and artemisia daily. I ended up going back on Mepron after a few months.

My LLNP said it gives incredible brain herxes (whatever that is). I assume she meant things like six is talking about. Hallucinations etc..

Thank you both for your replies. I think it is good to know what I may be in for ahead of time.

I hope I don't have hallucinations, but it is good to know yours did not last very long six. I am sorry you still had to go back on Mepron.

Thanks. I'm in remission now. [Smile]

The hallucinations weren't scary. Maybe I should have been scared .....

One was of my husband standing there talking to me. He woke me up, told me he didn't mean to, to go back to sleep, to sleep well, that he loved me. It was actually a nice hallucination since he was out of town. [Smile] I was not dreaming. I was awake, but had just awakened.

The other was when I went to bed and the first few happened before we even turned the lights off. It was an auditory hallucination. It sounded like large books were being thrown on the floor near me. I was astounded that my husband could not hear them. I remember saying, "You mean to tell me you didn't hear that?!?!" I even looked under the bed to see if a book had fallen off the nightstand.

That gives you an idea of what it did ..... If it continued, I'd have told my LLMD. I probably should have told him about those two, but didn't.

six, it is awesome that you are in remission.

I think it is better not to be scared. For me just knowing what to expect is a great help.

At least your hallucinations were not bad ones! It has to be so weird to really hear or see something that didn't happen!! Did you take the Larium before bed? If you remember, did the hallucinations both happen about the same time after taking it?

Thanks!

ahmet, thanks for your response. What time did you take the Larium?

ahmet, thanks for your reply. Do you think it would help to take it right before you go to sleep?

I started 2 weeks ago with a 'loading' dose of 5 pills on Friday. Felt tired and nauseous the whole weekend. Then better and better. The second single dose was fine. The instructions say to take it after the single biggest meal of the day (for me that is dinner which is about 4 hours before I go to sleep). I'm concerned about the psychiatric affects and will only take it when my husband is around. But haven't experienced any, to be clear.

My babesia seems quite tough to treat, was on malarone then mepron, now larium.

I took one pill every day for four days. And no after that, I take it every three days. At first, I was really dizzy. Also, after the third night, I had night sweats and fever from hell. And that was after over two years of Mepron/zith at high doeses!

Now, the only symptom I notice is its really hard to fall asleep. I take it in the morning, and insomnia is still a problem. Benn taking it now for 9 weeks. I'm not sure if this is working. It seemed like it was working in the beginning. But Babs really isn't my worst symptom (except for the first herx). My biggest problem is that it is supressing my immune system, and making it impossible to get over the lyme...

valeriedc, I am glad the Larium seems to be helping and that you have not had any psychiatric side effects. I think it is a good idea to take it when someone is around. I also have a tough case of Babesiosis. I hope the Larium continues to help you.

ahmet, thanks. I am sorry you are having sleeping problems. I hope it lets up for you soon.

Amanda, thanks for posting when you take it. It sounds like you had quite a herx. I hope it is still working so you can eradicate the Babesiosis. I have been on Mepron several times. Why do you say it is affecting your immune system?
