OK, I need to get something straight.
I have heard it (2) ways...

TAKE magnesium because you are depleted... and

DON'T take it because it supports bio films..

my legs are aching every day and I have many muscle twitches thru-out the day. I am wondering of mag will help... but don't want to take it if is going to harm.

And since muscle aches are my main symptom, if mag helps will it mask if the antibiotics are working or not?

thanks [Smile]

If you suffer from Lyme-induced magnesium deficiency (intra-cellular magnesium, Not "serum levels"), it can contribute to or even cause things like muscle spasms (twitches), cramps, muscle soreness & heart skips.
The ILADS stance on this remains magnesium supplementation, the amount of which is best suggested by your LLMD who's familiar with your case.

Though Mg- & other minerals- are used in the formation of borrelias' protective bio-films, satisfying the body's needs is of primary importance, to keep up immune system strength.

This controversy does have the potential to be another "Vitamin B complex: Should I take or Not take" debate. Only further research on the B.B. colony biofilms can help answer this.

NAC inhibits biofilms (though not completely) and increases glutathione. It is said that a quinolone and NAC can inhibit biofilms 100%, but I will never touch that class of drugs again in my life.

Maybe you can try taking the mag and also take something that breaks up the biofilm.

I am on Chelex for the biofilm. And, I do take a mag, zinc, and calcium combo.

There are other herbs/supps that say they can break up biofilm:

I use the Chelex because it was suggested through my LLMD.

I have heard good things and I believe there are studies promoting Lumbrokinase as a treatment for biofilm.

My LLMD uses Lumbrokinase and Bromelain (for those who can't tolerate the Lumbrokinase) to break up biofilms.

The benefits of magnesium supplements for me are noticeable.

I was wondering the same thing. My LLMD wants me to take Lumbrokinase to break up biofilms in addition to magnesium.

I'm hoping to notice only good effects! [Smile]

My LLMD says we don't know enough about Biofilms to treat properly. The reasearch to date is very early and only done in petri dishes. There isn't good indications of what works in people yet.

I do use Magnesium.

We NEED magnesium. We can address biofilm in any number of ways. I guarantee that if we withhold magnesium from our bodies, we will die long before any lyme cyst.

Can the intracellular test for magnesium by ordered through normal doctors so it can be covered by insurance? I brought it up once to a nurse practitioner at my cardiologist's office and she just gave me a blank look.

Here's a link with a brief explanation of the difference between serum magnesium and magnesium RBC, which measures intracellular and tissue magnesium levels.

It also includes a list of symptoms of Mg deficiency.

You can order these from Quest. Make sure you ask for Mg RBC, or you will get the serum Mg test!

Increasing my Mg intake (oral and topical) cured (I am not kidding - CURED!) my depression and allowed me to discontinue my daily Zoloft. It was a miracle for me.

Take magnesium. I have tried pills, magnesium oil, and a powedered drink called Natural Calm.
The most potent of the these is Natural Calm. I suffer from spasms and twitches and magnesium helps. I am going to ask for injections/IV on my next LLMD visit.

I suppose not breathing or eating would also kill Borrellia...but..it is not an option. [Smile] Make yourself healthy and let the antibiotics do their job! you need your magnesium and other supplements..we all do!

Good luck..Natural Calm can be found in most organic supermarkets. It is my resounding preference after spending months experimenting with different types of magnesium pills and oil.

I also prefer the powders for oral supplementation. My current fave is Mag-Tea G by Douglas Labs. It's Mg with green and white teas.
