I thought this was interesting too in so far as the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is concerned.

I can vouch for nicotine knocking out some bacteria in the system. I have a friend that smokes cigars on occasions and I had one with him about 2 years ago. After smoking the cigar I made a run to the bathroom and hit the toilet. Seems I had a little herx nausea also.
I smoked one with him at a later date and didn't have that reaction but the first one sure knocked out something.
